Based on the title of the article, what type of claim do you think the researchers are making (i.e., causal, association, or frequency). Explain your answer.

The title of the article is “Brief Sleep After Learning Keeps Emotional Memories Alive for Years” which predicts a causal claim. I believe the researchers are making a causal claim because the title does not use verb phrases that are linked with association claims such as prefers, predict, or tied to. The title also does not use descriptive statistics to describe one variable, which would lead to a frequency claim. The title also infers the use two variables where one is a manipulated independent variable.

2.
What hypothesis or hypotheses did the study attempt to test?

The study attempted to test the effect of brief sleep or lack of sleep after learning new material and its’ affect on how well emotional memories are remembered.

3.
What was/were the primary independent variable(s) of the study?

The primary independent variable was the amount of sleep the participants received.

4.
How was/were the independent variable(s) operationalized?

The independent variable was operationalized in two levels where one level was a 3-hour interval of wakefulness and the other was a 3-hour interval of sleep after learning. Sleep was measured and monitored …show more content…
Sleep after learning specifically enhanced long-term retention of emotional texts as confirmed statistically in the hierarchical loglinear analysis. Retention for neutral texts had no significant difference between sleep and wake conditions while emotional text memories were enhanced more after sleeping compared with those who remained awake. Recognition performance significantly exceeded chance level per se after 4 years only when subjects had learned emotional texts and slept

Corporate Reputation

...Corporate Reputation Review Volume 12 Number 4 A Systematic Review of the Corporate Reputation Literature: Definition, Measurement, and Theory Kent Walker Asper School of Business, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada ABSTRACT A systematic review of the corporate reputation literature is conducted. The final sample of 54 articles (and one book) consists of well-cited papers, and papers in journals that have published high quality work in corporate reputation. The sample is then analyzed and the three fundamental problems in the reputation literature are addressed – the need for a comprehensive and well-accepted definition, the difficulty in operationalizing corporate reputation, and the ongoing need for more developed theory. Two main findings evolve from this analysis: (1) reputation may have different dimensions and is issue specific, and (2) different stakeholder groups may have different perceptions of corporate reputations. The implications for future research are discussed. Corporate Reputation Review (2010) 12, 357–387. doi:10.1057/crr.2009.26 KEYWORDS: corporate reputation; definition; operationalization; organizational identity; organizational image; systematic review INTRODUCTION There are many reasons why organizations and researchers should care about corporate reputation. The relationship between reputation and a sustained competitive advantage is widely acknowledged in the literature (eg, Fombrun and Shanley, 1990; Fombrun, 1996;...

A surprising number of firms use firm risk rather than project risk in evaluating new investments. This article reports on a large-scale (n = 1,056), exploratory factor analysis study that determined the underlying constructs that comprise student barriers to online learning. The eight factors found were (a) administrative issues, (b) social interaction, (c) academic skills, (d) technical skills, (e) learner motivation, (f) time and support for studies, (g) cost and access to the Internet, and (h) technical problems. Independent variables that significantly affected student ratings of these barrier factors included: gender, age, ethnicity, type of learning institution, self-rating of online learning skills, effectiveness of learning online, online learning enjoyment, prejudicial treatment in traditional classes, and the number of online courses completed. Introduction As the popularity of the Internet grows, so does the potential for online learning. A great deal of evidence exists showing that no significant differences should be expected...

He Effect of Institutional and Cultural Factors on the Perceptions of Earnings Management

...JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING RESEARCH Vol. 9, No. 2 2010 pp. 21–43 American Accounting Association DOI: 10.2308/jiar.2010.9.2.21 The Effect of Institutional and Cultural Factors on the Perceptions of Earnings Management Marshall Geiger and Joyce van der Laan Smith ABSTRACT: In this study we examine the effect of stakeholder orientation versus shareholder orientation, and the level of cultural secrecy on individuals’ perceptions of earnings management practices. Examining perceptions from 1,260 participants from 13 countries indicates that individuals from stakeholder-oriented institutional backgrounds were less accepting of earnings management, including both accounting earnings management and operating earnings management activities, than participants from shareholder-oriented institutional backgrounds, and that individuals from secretive cultures were more accepting of both types of earnings management activities. Our findings provide evidence of the anticipated perceptual differences across countries with respect to earnings management and suggest the need for further research linking perceptions to reported earnings management measures. I. INTRODUCTION constant pressure in accounting and business across the globe is for companies to report stable, if not growing, financial position to stockholders, creditors, analysts, and other interested parties. With this strain comes the pressure on the firm’s financial reporting executives to “manage” the company’s reported...

...PHOTOCATALYSIS AN OVERVIEW1 Radwan A. Al-Rasheed Saline Water Desalination Research Institute Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) P.O.Box 8328, Al-Jubail 31951, Saudi Arabia e-mail: rdc@swcc.gov.sa ABSTRACT Photocatalysis process, as an environmental application is a relatively novel subject with tremendous potential in the near future. This paper describes the basics of heterogeneous photocatalysis, mainly on TiO2 and the application of photocatalytic processes to water purification and treatment. The paper also reviews more than 50 references covering the wide scale of heterogeneous water phase applications. Finally, a short review of more interesting practical application of photocatalysis for the removal of natural organic matter from seawater is presented. 1. INTRODUCTION Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a rapidly expanding technology for water and air treatment. It can be defined as the acceleration of photoreaction in the presence of a catalyst. The initial interest in the heterogeneous photocatalysis was started when Fujishima and Honda discovered in 1972 the photochemical splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen with TiO2 [18]. From this date extensive work has been carried out to produce hydrogen from water by this novel oxidation reduction reaction using a variety of semiconductors. In recent years interest has been focused on the use of semiconductor materials as photocatalysts for the removal of organic and inorganic species from aqueous or gas phase. This...

Internationalization

...Internationalisation of SMEs: Options, Incentives, Problems, And Business Strategy Mohd Khairuddin Hashim & Romle Hassan Faculty of Business Management University Utara Malaysia ABSTRACT Internationalisation presents firms with various opportunities to expand their business activities. The review of the small business literature however, indicates that as a field of study, internationalisation has not attracted much research attention, particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Malaysian context. This study initiated an attempt to address this issue. More specifically, the study strived to explore the internationalisation options, incentives, problems, and business strategy among manufacturing SMEs. INTRODUCTION Globalisation offers various internationalisation opportunities to not only large enterprises, but also to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Internationalisation provides firms with opportunities to expand their sales, lower their costs, and improve their profits. Although internationalisation presents firms with tremendous opportunities, the complexities and challenges of international marketplace appear to restrict their interest and frustrate their efforts at internationalising (De Noble et.al, 1989; and Burpitt and Rondinelli, 2000). 1 In the case of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), they seemed to be slacking in the area of internationalisation. In spite of the fact that international markets can provide them...
