Adults like children and young people can have communication difficulties for that reason it is important to be sensitive to the needs of other adults when communicating with them. It is important to assess the situation to establish if the individual needs adaptations making to enable them to communicate effectively. When talking to someone who has a hearing impairment it is important to face the individual and maintain eye contact this allows where possible for the individual to lip read so they can understand what you are saying. It is important to speak slowly and clearly to give the individual adequate time to process the information. Individuals with hearing impairments sometimes use signing to communicate with others: it is important …show more content…
Parents may not be able to read, may have visual impairments or may not speak English; this makes it more difficult for them to process this information. It is important that schools are aware of these difficulties so they are able to provide information in alternative formats: this may include information in different languages, large print, Braille, providing photographs and pictures to reinforce written information or providing information verbally. It is important to be sensitive towards these difficulties: this means approaching parents sensitively who fail to respond to messages sent home. Open communication allows all parents to be actively involved in their child’s education.
Some adults that we may come into contact with in education may not speak English or may speak English as an additional language: it is important that schools provide a translator to enable effective communication. When communicating with parents it is important to maintain professionalism. Some parents may wish to be addressed on a first name basis while others may wish to be addressed as Mr or Mrs It is important to respect an individual’s wishes and address them
