The plot development of my favourite movie:

2012

The movie starts by a scene in 2009, Dr. Adrian Helmsley, part of a worldwide geophysical team, visits astrophysicist Dr. Satnam in India. Dr. Satnam warns that neutrinos and radiation from a solar storm are causing the temperature of the Earth's core to increase rapidly. Adrian Helmsley informs Carl Anheuser and United States President Thomas Wilson that this will start natural disasters and it’s necessary to prepare for saving a fraction of world’s population. In 2010, Wilson, along with other international leaders, begins a massive, secret project intended to ensure humanity's survival. The world’s leaders decide to build ships called “arks” to escape the cataclysm. Approximately 400,000 people are chosen to board ships that are constructed at Cho Ming valley, China. Additional funding for the project is raised by selling tickets to the private sector for €1 billion per person. By 2011, they start secretly moving humanity's valuable treasures to the Himalayas.
In 2012, Jackson Curtis is a science fiction writer in Los Angeles who works part-time as a limousine driver for Russian billionaire Yuri Karpov. Jackson's ex-wife Kate and their children Noah and Lily live with Kate's boyfriend, Gordon, a plastic surgeon. Jackson takes Noah and Lily camping in Yellowstone National Park, where they meet Charlie, who hosts a radio show from the park. Charlie references a theory that suggests the Maya calendar predicts that the 2012 phenomenon is going to occur and it’s the Earth’s doomsday. A series of events leads Jackson to believe what Charlie has told him. Charlie also has a map of the ark project and information of government officials and scientists from around the world who were murdered after discovering information about the ark project and trying to alert the public. ...In the play by Sophocles, Oedipus stands out as a classic representation of what a tragedy hero is.   Oedipus the book has key aspects that Aristotle said to make a tragedy and a tragic hero. One of the requirements for being a tragic hero according to Aristotle is "a [great] man who is neither a paragon of virtue and justice nor undergoes the change to misfortune through any real badness or wickedness but because of some mistake." There must be some mistake made by the character flaw that causes the great man’s fortunes to turn for the worst. Aristotle felt that there were certain plot devices that needed to take place in order for it to qualify as a tragedy and for the character to really be a tragic hero. Without a tragic hero there cannot be a tragedy happening, plot is a very important point. The plot of a true tragedy should be complex and consist of reversal and recognition. Both of these plot elements are contained within the play Oedipus the King. The play starts out highlighting Oedipus’ character by showing him talking to the grieving citizens in front of his palace. They are praying to the gods to stop the plague that is destroying Thebes. He mourns with his people over the hardships that have befallen the land of Thebes. He tells them that his brother-in-law, Creon, has already been sent to seek out and consult with...

Comparative Essay

...in April 2012 and then it was released in February 2013.Richard LaGravenese was both the scriptwriter and the director of the film. The movie and the novel had big differences, which definitely make us think which one is more effective. The story is about teenager Ethan Wate, who is obsessed with his urge to finish high school and go to college in order to leave behind, the small, weird town of Gatlin. Everything changed the moment when Ethan met Lena Duchannes, a mysterious girl who just arrived in town, Ethan found out that Lena was the girl in his dreams. Lena had a lot of problems from the time that she moved back her hometown. Lena told Ethan her dark secrets (being a caster) and family history, the story starts with Ethan’s love for Lena and her upcoming problem, which is her 16th birthday. Which medium: the novel or the film is most effective for telling this story? We will answer this question by comparing three parallel scenes from the novel and its filmed adaptation, in terms of how well each scene develops the plot, characters and overall theme of the story. There are hundreds of famous novels, which filmmakers turn them into a movie, whether they could be an unforgettable one or a boring movie, thus it’s important for the audience and the fans to figure out which one was more effective and successful. The plot development in the novel was good enough to represent the main points to the audience meanwhile in the movie the director cut so much of the plot, which...

The Plot and Theme in Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral”

...The Plot and Theme in Raymond Carver’s “Cathedral” Raymond Carver states that by the mid-1960s he was tired of reading and writing “long narrative fiction” (“On Writing” 46). Shorter fiction, he found, was more immediate. This mode of thought may help us to understand why Carver turned to compose shorter works of fiction like “Cathedral,” a work that acts as a brief glance into how one man’s physical blindness helps another man begin to overcome his own spiritual blindness. Carver’s thematic plots could convey alternate meaning—both directly and indirectly. “Cathedral” introduces the theme of blindness, shown by “this blind man” (Carver 709), but concludes by addressing the deeper theme of internal or spiritual blindness by the host. Therefore, the plot and theme of “Cathedral” relay simultaneous levels of meaning to the reader. “Cathedral” tells a story of an irreligious man, who learns a spiritual lesson from a blind man: “But I had my eyes closed. I thought I’d keep them that way for a little longer. I thought it was something I ought to do” (Carver 718). That’s why at the end of the story he does not open his eyes for he wants to “keep them that way for a little longer” so that he can see clearly in his mind. There are two types of blindness, but when we talk about blindness, we usually think of the blindness on our physical body rather than the blindness in our mind. In “Cathedral” both Robert and the host are blind: one is blind in external sight, and the other one is...

The Attention Grabbers of Midnight Cowboy

...Karlee Folk ENGL-126 - 002W - Film & Literature June 7th 2012 The opening scene of midnight cowboy does an extremely good job of out lining what the story of the film will be about. With the use of different visual effects of the shots throughout the movie they display the main focus points that will be important during this movie. The movie gives the viewers the main key elements of the movie in the first couple scenes. For example, the main characters name repeated “where’s that Joe Buck.” Or the emphasis on the “cowboy” features in his outfit from head to toe. Finally the almost arrogant or cocky like attitude given through his singing to himself through the mirror. These main points are not only obvious but the lighting and visual distance from the camera highlight’s these key points even more. With the key point given to the viewers the plot is able to be narrowed in by the end of the opening scene. With this done there is no hidden agenda that the director is trying to have and the viewers are never left out of what this film will be about. They are able to outline the plot an follow the plot while watching this movie. One of the main features this movie uses to its advantage is a close up. This is where the shot is close up to a person or an object (Petrie, G-2). Midnight cowboy uses this most while emphasizing on the cowboy features that Joe Buck was wearing. A close up was done as he carefully placed the black hat with a gold band on his head. Another close...
