SMART WAYS TO SAVE

MONEY
PRESENTED BY WWW.82INVEST.COM www.82invest.com

One of the quickest ways to improve your finances is to reduce your expenses and find more ways to save money. This book is a compilation of various money saving tips that have been published over the years.

1. COMBINE YOUR CABLE, INTERNET AND TELEPHONE SERVICE.
Companies now offer combined services that not only cost less, but offer the convenience of a single bill. Called a Triple Play Package (Cable, Internet, and Phone), these combined service deals can save you a bundle.

2. SLOW DOWN YOUR INTERNET SERVICE.
I went to the slower internet service option with my cable company and saved $15 per month. And I haven’t noticed a difference when surfing the Net.

3. CONVERT TO A GAS WATER HEATER.
They are more efficient and will save you money in the long run.

4. REFINANCE YOU MORTGAGE.
If you can reduce your interest rate by one percent or more, it is often beneficial to refinance. This is particularly true for those with high rates due to less than stellar credit scores. If your score has improved, you may qualify for a better rate. I would start by asking your current mortgage lender about lower rates.

5. GET YOUR BOOKS AND DVDS FROM THE LIBRARY.
I love books and read every day. While I buy some of the books I read, most come from the library. Simply put, it’s hard to beat free. Many libraries now have movies on DVD that can be checked out. If your library offers this service, it sure beats paying Blockbuster or Netflix.

6. DON’T PAY INTEREST ON CREDIT CARDS.
This is obvious, but I soon as you fail to pay off the credit card in full, the high interest payments start to eat away at your monthly budget. If the temptation to spend more than you can pay on a credit card is to great, get rid of the credit card (and ignore the previous tip!).

7. GET RID OF YOUR HOME TELEPHONE.
This is a great way to save money. Many don’t do it because of the 911 service, and that’s understandable. But if you’re comfortable relying on a cell phone, there’s no reason

www.82invest.com

to keep a land line. If you do, consider reducing your service to the minimum and only use the phone in an emergency.

8. TAKE YOUR LUNCH TO WORK ONE MORE DAY A WEEK THAN YOU DO NOW.
Eating out at lunch is fun, so I wouldn’t eliminate it completely. But taking lunch just one more day a week will keep money in your pocket.

9. STOP SMOKING.
Need I say more?

10. DRINK LESS ALCOHOL.
It costs money and adds calories.

11. GET ORGANIZED AND AVOID MISSED PAYMENTS.
I’ve missed a payment or two because the bill got buried beneath a stack of papers. Get organized and avoid those late payment penalties. If you do miss a payment, call your creditor and ask to have the penalty removed. They’ll usually accommodate the request, at least the first time.

12. FARMERS MARKETS
Buying direct from the provider can prove to be less expensive than from a supermarket as you are cutting out the middle man. Many stall holders will even be prepared to negotiate discounts with you, especially if you buy large quantities. Best of all you are guaranteed fresh produce and you are supporting your local community.

13. SHOP ON THE INTERNET
Some of the best deals to be had can be found on the internet. Visit product comparison websites and find retailers offering the best discounts for the item you want. In addition to helping you save money, these websites often display feedback on the retailer service as well as product reviews; so you can be confident that you are buying the right product, from a good retailer at the best price.

14. REPLACE YOUR LIGHT BULBS
Replacing your old light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs can save you money on long term replacement and helps to lower your energy bills. These light bulbs can last up to ten times longer than regular light bulbs and as they are energy-efficient, they also help you reduce your carbon footprint while decreasing your energy consumption.

15. CASH IN ON YOUR CELL PHONE
Don’t just automatically renew your cell phone contract once the initial agreement term ends. Chat to the provider and see what options they are prepared to give you in order to prevent you from taking your business elsewhere. Often they will be more than happy to give you extra free talk time, text messages or even offer monthly fee reductions. Some providers are now even promoting cashback schemes.

16. TRADE BABYSITTING WITH SOME FRIENDS.
We used to do this all the time with another couple. We would keep their kids one night a month, and they would return the favor. It was wonderful to know that we had at least ONE date per month! When you have small children, it’s often the babysitting cost that puts a date night out of reach, financially speaking.

17. AUTOMATED SAVINGS.
I have a certain amount deducted from my direct deposited paycheck that goes to a savings account. I don’t see it. I don’t count that in my monthly income. It just goes. I also have an online savings account and have a certain amount automatically transferred from my checking account to the savings account. I look at this as a routine bill that has to be accounted for, just like anything else.

18. THE SAVINGS GAME.
How much can I save off this grocery bill? My budget for this paycheck is $150. Can I get it under that? I got it under $125 last time. Can I do better this time? My gas budget this time is $60. How low can I get it? And so on and so forth. Any amount under budget gets saved. I am “allowed” to get myself a treat with some of the proceeds if I really, really want it.

19. TRACK YOUR SPENDING AND INVESTMENTS.
It’s essential to know where your money is going so you can manage it efficiently. We use a free money management tool to track our savings and investments and make updates to our financial accounts when things get out of balance. This is a great way to track all your income and expenses.

20. AVOID DEBT AND OUT YOUR MONEY TO WORK FOR YOU.
We have a mortgage, which we don’t mind because we would either have a mortgage or pay rent. But we are free of any student loans or consumer debt including credit cards,

www.82invest.com

automobiles, home equity line of credit, or anything else. This means we pay very little interest and are able to make more of our money work for us instead of work for someone else. And that’s the whole point of saving money, isn’t it?

21. LATTE FACTOR.
Like a daily latte or coffee? These seemingly small drips of dollars can really add up! Forget the daily coffee break and make your own hot beverages to save lots of loot. Or drink homemade tea!

22. DITCH THE CAR.
Buy a Bike. Ride the Bus. Carpool. I did this years ago and lived to tell the tale. I guesstimate I’ve saved at least 5K a year by riding my bike to school and work. I tend to carpool or ride the bus on rainy days. Since I’ve been car-free for 12 years, that’s 60K saved! Ka-ching!

23. EAT LESS MEAT.
Where’s the beef? To save thousands in groceries try eating less meat in your family meals. You don’t have to go vegetarian, just try some meatless dishes a few times a week. Switching from animal protein to bean protein is a wonderfully frugal way to add some dollars to you bank account. Try soaking dried beans to become the ultimate money saving bean counter.

24. PLAN A STAYCATION.
Stay at home for your next family vacation and save on lodging, dining out, and traveling costs. Staycations involve visiting local attractions like museums, parks, festivals, and play grounds. Get to know your area and neighbors better by vacationing near home.

25. GROW A GARDEN.
Cut some cash from your grocery bill by growing your own food. Planting some common veggies can help save a bundle.

26. SWITCH TO CLOTH DIAPERS.
The number of diapers a baby and toddler uses until potty trained is staggering. Calculate the cash spent on your baby’s poopy disposable diapers and you may just s$it yourself. Consider switching to cloth diapers to save some bucks. The biggest money savings can be found if you plan to have multiple children or can buy used cloth diapers.

27. BUY USED.
Need some furniture, books, or car? Why not buy used to save! Buying used goods not only saves on taxes, but saves you from spending top dollar on retail. Most of my furniture and nearly all of my books were bought used. It’s astounding the quality available if you’re willing to wait and buy used.

28. QUIT THE GYM. GO FOR A WALK.
What’s up with fitness club initiation fees, contracts, locker fees, and monthly rates? Joining a gym can be an expensive relationship, especially if your membership or contract is hard to break or goes on for years. Know your rights before joining a gym and be aware of the pitfalls.

29. SELL YOUR STUFF.
Are endless racks of CDs, videos, books, sports equipment, and stuff cluttering up your space? Consider selling some of your stuff to raise some funds and clear some space. Try selling through garage sales, local swap meets, and online through craigslist, Kijiji, and eBay.

30. STOP BUYING CRAP.
Do you really need the latest gizmo or gadget? Resist the marketing muckity muck when advertisers launch crap, unveil crap, and convince you to upgrade crap. Crap is expensive. Learn to Just Say “No” to Crap before your wallet gets whacked by needless crap.

31. EDUCATE YOURSELF ON INVESTING.
Remember that you’re investing for yourself. It isn’t as difficult as the professionals want you to think it is.

32. PAY CASH FOR ALL YOUR PURCHASES.
Cash is and always has been KING! You get further with cash in hand than you do with credit plus it keeps you from overspending. According to the credit manager at my company, people with a credit card spend as much as 33 percent more than those spending cash. Why? There’s no immediate sting, it comes later and it hits you over and over and over and over and …

33. WAIT TWO DAYS BEFORE A MAJOR PURCHASE.
When it comes to major purchases, I make it a rule to always wait at least two days to do some research and to think through the purchase. Do I really need this item? Do I want to part with my money? Will I regret this later? What are the possible alternatives I have at my disposal to satisfy my need for this item other than spending money?

34. SWITCH TO CLOTH NAPKINS.
I’m not sure why it took a down economy for this one to dawn on me, but cloth napkins are a great alternative to paper napkins, which increase waste and add to our non-food budget.

35. DIVERSIFY YOUR INCOME.
Look for ways to increase your income outside of your full time job. Do you have a hobby that you could make a small business? Could you spend some time working online surveys (many of these survey companies are scams, but the one I’ve linked is not. I’ve been a CashCrate member for over a year now)? Could you add some freelance work in the same line of work you do full time?

36. HAVE A NO-SPEND WEEKEND.
Sometimes it takes a break in the routine to get spending under control. Try to go an entire weekend without eating out, shopping, or ordering something online. It won’t solve all your spending problems, but it’s a start.

37. FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THINGS ON YOUR OWN, RATHER THAN PAYING AN EXPERT.
This year I’ve managed to rescue a toy from the bottom of our guest bathroom toilet and unclog and empty an air conditioner drain line. With the help of the internet, or a good “how-to” book, you would be surprised how much you can do on your own and avoid expensive repair charges.

38. WASH YOUR OWN CAR.
Our town has one of those automated car washes and for $9.00 you can get “the works.” Essentially, it is a wash, wax and application of tire shine. I’m pretty sure I can do it for less. Better yet, employ the kids and let them earn a little extra money this summer.

39. SUNDAY PAPER ONLY.
Consider scaling back subscriptions such as newspapers to the bare minimum. If you are only going to get a paper once a week, opt for the Sunday paper, which usually includes coupons and weekly sales flyers from local grocery stores. Toss the other sales circulars – you may see something you want to buy!

40. BUY GENERIC INK CARTRIDGES FOR YOUR PRINTER.
Ever stopped to calculate the cost per gallon of printer ink? Me neither, but I hate when my printer runs out of ink because it seems impossible to spend less than $30 or $40 to replace the black and color cartridges. Check out a generic cartridge reseller. The quality of ink is comparable to manufacturer’s ink, and many offer a dollar or two off if you recycle the old cartridge.

Money & Banking

...Kelcie Jeffries Money & Banking Mr. Foster March 8, 2014 How Technology has changed the Banking World over Time The ATM “In 1939, Luther Simjian patented an early and not-so-successful prototype of an ATM. However, some experts have the opinion that James Goodfellow of Scotland holds the earliest patent date of 1966 for a modern ATM, and John D White in the US is often credited with inventing the first free-standing ATM design. In 1967, John Shepherd-Barron invented and installed an ATM in a Barclays Bank in London. Don Wetzel invented an American made ATM in 1968. However, it wasn't until the mid to late 1980s that ATMs became part of mainstream banking” (Bellis). Although we can see that it is not clear on who invented the ATM, I think they all played an important role in developing what we have in today’s world. Don Wetzel was the most recent with installing one of the first ATMs in American and him and two other men invented what we know as today as the ATM card. The ATM made its first showcase on the outside at the Rockville Center, New York Chemical Bank. Also, another interesting fact I learned about this first ATM was that it only gave you cash it did not tell you your balance or let you transfer funds like we can at today’s ATM. “The ATM we know today was later installed and invented in 1971 and was called the total teller” (Bellis). During this era not every customer could have the right to an ATM card, banks would only let credit card holders have access...

Deepwater Horizon had two main components, owned and operated by offshore oil drilling company (Transocean) and it was leased by BP Oil Company. The BP oil spill occurred in April 20, 2010, there were three major cracks that spilled the crude oil into the ocean. The blast occurred approximately 41 miles from the Louisiana coast. The leaked continued for about three months after the explosion from the Macondo well, it was estimated that anywhere between 35,000 to 60,000 barrels per day were leaked, it is estimated that after all was said and done, approximately 4.9 million barrels were spilled. It is also important to mention that 11 workers died when this explosion happened. When the spill happened it affected a lot more than BP was expecting; it wasn’t just the Gulf of Mexico sea life (sea turtles, marine mammals, coral and fisheries), but it also affected all of the shores of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. When it hit all of these states, it affected their tourism, fishing, food, and healthcare just to name a few of the things. Debate Paper-Childhood Obesity

...Final Project: Debate Paper Over the past few weeks I have had some close people to me have serious medical issues including death as a result of obesity. I have been going to the gym for the past few years to be as healthy as I can. I feel that health and fitness is a necessity to live a long healthy life. With this being said the subject of my debate is the following: Should childhood obesity be an issue that is dealt with at a more serious level that includes parents and schools being proactive? Obesity is a condition that causes medical and psychological issues and can be prevented by proper diet and exercise to protect our American population from childhood and in the future. Children today are bullied more than ever due to the increase of obesity. Society sees a story in the news about crib recalls or toys made with a product that is deemed poisonous or dangerous and we immediately throw the toys out or take the cribs back. We care enough of our children to take away the dangerous products that could hurt our children; rather, we won’t do anything to take away the dangerous food products that could potentially hurt our children and their health. This is as a deadly issue as the recalled...
