WHY WINNERS WIN

INTRO

2. Who are these winners? Are indls born winners? No winners are not born they are made. Recent researches on the winners conducted by Stanford institute concluded that only 12% of our success depends on knowledge and technical skills and 88% on positive attitude, enthusiasm, persistence and determination

3. Why do winners only win? What is that quality that separates a winner from a loser? Can everybody win? This brings me to various types of people. There are four kinds of people in this world. They are:-

(a) Who watch things happen.

(b) Who simply wonder what has happened.

(c ) Who criticize what has happened.

(d) Who makes things happen.

4. Winners are the people who make things happen. They have strong desire to achieve and they achieve what they desired. Someone said that all men are created equal, but it is what they do afterwards that makes the difference. Winners believe that every cloud has a silver lining. Some thing good can come out from every situation

5. I will tell you a story of a rich man who wanted to asses his two sons. To one of them he gave a pile of presents and the other a pile of cow dung. The one with the gifts started complaining about the missing gifts, but the second one sold the cow dung and started a business. The second boy is a winner; he felt that some thing good can be made out of every thing.

6. Everyone wants to be a winner. That brings me to the aim of my talk today.

AIM

7. The aim of my talk today is to bring out characteristics of winners and how to go about setting goals to become a winner.

PRE-VIEW

8. I shall be conducting my talk in the following parts as under:-

(a) Characteristics of Winners.

(b) Setting Goals. What are goals and how to set goals?

PART- I

9. Characteristics of winners. Few traits of winners are as under:-

(a) Patience. (b) Plg. (c ) Professionalism. (d) Healthy attitude towards self. (e) Good finders. (f) Listeners. (g) Enthusiasm. (h) Positive attitude. (j) Persistence. (k) Goal oriented people.

Positive Attitude

10. I will tell you a story of tiny frogs. Once a bunch of frogs arng a running race. The goal was to reach the top of a very high tower. A big crowd had gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer the contestants. The race began.

11. Honestly no one in the crowd believed that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the tower. Everyone was saying oh it is too difficult. They will never make it to the top, no chance and the tower is too big.

12. Frogs began falling one by one. Except for some who were climbing higher and higher. The crowd continued to yell. It is too difficult and no one will make it. Many frogs got tired and gave up. But one continued higher and higher, this one would not give up. At the end everyone else had given up climbing the tower, except for the one who reached the top. Everyone wanted to know how this frog succeeded. It turned out to be that the frog was deaf. Never listen to other people’s tendencies to be negative, because they take up our wonderful dreams. Above all be deaf when people tell you that you can’t fulfill your dreams.

13. Always think that I can do it. In 1955 when Walt Disney had the idea of amusement parks. But all his friends said we can’t find so much place and they all spoke on the negative side. But he believed that he can do it and gentlemen he has done wonders with them.

Persistence

14. Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing worthwhile can be achieved without the will to start, the enthusiasm to continue and the persistence to complete. Persistence and determination are very important.

15. Here is a life story of a man.

Event Age

16. Who was this gentleman? It was none other than Abraham Lincon.

17. Mark Waugh Steve Waugh. Both are twins who had played cricket and represented Australia. Steve a more determined and persistent man with less talent. Mark a flamboyant and highly talented cricketer. The person who has achieved the maximum is Steve. He had always believed in the philosophy that it is too soon to quit. A winner does not leave himself short but he continues to strive to achieve his objective.

18. Thomas Edison the man who is responsible for lighting our homes was considered week. He did not study Physics, Chemistry and Maths the subjects considered essential for electronics. But he would never give up. He failed 10,000 times. When he was asked how it feels to have failed 10000 times, he replied I found 10000 ways which does not work. He never gave up and never allowed himself to be discouraged under any circumstances.

19. Persistence is often the determining attitude that separates the winner from the loser. Winners do not give in, and do not give up. After the battle of Waterloo the Duke of Wellington said that the British soldiers were not any braver than Napoleon’s soldiers, but they were braver for five minutes longer.

20. Gentlemen winners are goal oriented people. That brings me to ph two of my talk.

PART II

21. What is a goal? Goal is an objective, tgt or an end result from the completion of tasks, activities or program. Goals are essential for any type of growth. Goals will have more power if we make them personally, state them speciphically and write them down.

22. Goals are the keys to success. Success is the progressive realization of the worthy goal. Progressive means that success is a journey not a destination, we never arrive. After we reach one goal we go to the next and the next. Realization means it is an experience, I have to feel within myself. Worthy determines quality of the journey. That is what gives fulfillment.

23. Goals help us build self confidence. Self confidence is build upon successful experience, setting and reaching goals enhances this attribute. We may begin by writing simple achievable goals. That reminds me of our cricket team’s winning run at the Adelaide oval Australia in Dec 2003. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman were involved in record breaking partnership which ensured the victory. When the media quizzed them on the reasons for their success they said we set achievable goals and once they started achieving them that they moved from strength to strength. Goals are important because they give us direction. At any point in life when ever we felt content we were making progress towards a goal. But contentment becomes boredom imdtly if new goals are not set.

24. I had spoken to around 50 offrs in the course mainly my friends from army, navy and air force about their goals. You will be surprised to know gentlemen that 49 of them told me that they don’t have a goal. From a survey worldwide it was brought that 95% of the adults on the earth have no specific goals. Without goals our minds wander aimlessly.

25. It is essential to fill our minds with goal oriented thoughts. Always dream yourself to be achieving the goals. The sub conscious mind operates like a guidance system and will guide towards our goals. Psychologists tell us that we become what we imagine, and become what we expect to become. We have to visualize, once we visualize then we can actualize.

26. Goals are the key to success. If a person doesn’t have any goals he won’t know when he scores. I am reminded of a proverb which states “before you can score, you must have a goal”. These goals can be :-

(a) How many books do you plan to read?

(b) How much money do you want to save?

(c) What kind of house do you plan to own?

(d) What particular skills do you plan to develope or improve?

27. It is imperative that we define the target for which we are shooting or we will never know how close we have come to hitting it. Without the goals there is no way we can measure our success and achievement.

GUIDELINES FOR SETTING GOALS

28. How to set goals? Basis of setting goals, SMART. They are as under:-

(a) Specific. E.g. I want to lose weight; this is wish and becomes a goal when I say I will lose five kgs in 30 days.

(b) Measurable. If we can measure it we can achieve it.

(c) Achievable. It should be out of reach enough to be challenging, but not out of sight.

(d) Realistic. Must be realistic.

(e) Time Bound. When to start and when to end.

29. It is imperative that we write our goals down. This helps in crystallizing our thinking and makes them sound. The goals must be balanced. Our life is a wheel with many spokes. For the wheel to remain balanced all the spokes have to progress. Goals can be in any one of the following fields:-

(a) Family.

(b) Financial.

(c ) Physical.

(d) Mental.

(e) Social.

f) Spiritual.

30. To start one may set simple achievable goals. It is better to decide today to stop drifting aimlessly and join the elite 5%, who set goals and achieve much more. One of the exciting things about living is it is never too late to set goals.

31. Christopher Columbus cherished the vision of a water route to Indies, but discovered a new world. Edison dreamed of inventing a technique to illuminate houses, Louis Pasteur cherished a vision of developing a vaccine for rabies. They all proved this point that to actualize, one must visualize.

32. Decide specifically what you want to achieve in life. Winners know what they want in order to achieve it. One afternoon a boy was riding his horse with a group of merchants. A voice spoke out of the sky to him. Ride by yourself to an oasis 10 km to the West of here. When the stars come out pick up all the pebbles you see and put them in your pockets. In the morning you will be glad and sad. He did as he was instructed, he had picked up the pebbles, and he became tired and slept off. In the morning when he got up he knew what the voice meant. The pebbles had turned into gold. He was glad he had picked up many but sad he had not picked up more. We have the power to decide on the number and the quality of pebbles we want to take.

33. Goals can be life time goals, three year goals and six month goals. I can suggest some of the goals like within three years I will complete a MBA program, I will save two lakh rupees. This procedure removes vague generalities and establishes specific targets towards which we direct our energies. It is important to write down these goals that will crystallize our thinking and aid in making them concrete. Take 15 minutes to set your life time goals on any one of these fields like career, personal, financial intellectual, family and spiritual. One can always go back and revise these goals according to the needs and activities. Each goal carries a different value, some are important than the others. So we need to prioritize the goals.

34. Activities. Goals are achieved through activities. These activities are steps that we have to take to achieve them. A goal can be to save two lakh rupees in three years, the step could be to save 9000 rupees. It is always better to ask what I am doing with the time now. I would not tell to do only the priority goals. There must be time to relax and to entertain.

35. Time is very precious. It is better to write somewhere in the house what am I doing with the time now. This can help us to reflect on the activities to accomplish the goals. All the time need not be spent on achieving the priority goals. We need to relax and entertain. Accomplishment will be greater if our achievement is balanced.

36. Perhaps we need to develope some additional strength to develope that will help us in achieving the goals. Do I need to be more enthusiastic, develope a more positive attitude, org time better? Strengths I need to develope to achieve the goals:-

(a) Attitudes I need to develope.

(b) Skills I need to develope.

( c) Habits I need to develope.

37. It is essential to keep our eyes on our goals. We must think about it constantly if we have to achieve it. By this we will be motivated several times in achieving the goals. As the goals go out of sight it may go out of mind as well. Some time we may try another way to try and reach the goals. Although one road may have insurmountable obst, there are others which can lead us to our goals. Faith can only move the mountains. Winning requires persistent faith.

A hill is not too hard to climb Taken one step at a time One step is not too much to take One try is not too much to make One step, one try, one say, one smile Will shortly stretch into a mile And everything worthwhile was done By small steps taken one by one To reach the goal you started for Take one step more – take one step more.

CONCLUSION

38. Winners win just because they have the belief, persistent attitude and the burning desire to win. Australian cricket team is one of the good examples. Greatest joys in life come when we are developing our talents and make a positive contribution where we live and work. We have to take a minus and make a plus out of it. Failures are the fingerposts on the road to achievement. Don’t give up.
