A Life Application Before even reading the book “The 7 habits of highly effective people” by Stephen covey, I looked through the table of contents and realized that I had already experienced all seven of the habits he had expressed in the book. This was all related to my twelve years I had spent in the Army before my injury had happened. I was released then started attending school, and eventually ending up in a Management class where the book appeared. I realized that I am now reliving it through the college experience and eventually will reuse the habits in the civilian work force.
Although many of the experiences were similar in certain ways, reading the book itself gave me a much better perspective and understanding from these habits. The outcome of each was so different from what I had experienced in the Army. The power of the Paradigm, which was covered in part one of his book, stated that, “We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be” (Covey p.32). Just like a service member, whether still in or out of the service, has a smile every day to cover the sadness, Anger, and pain, which they may be struggling from PTSD, stress, and anxiety. We all tend to live each day where everything is perfect or bad because that’s how we see it. Simply said as people just think strictly inside the box where they assume everything is organized and put together well by the instructions. The view outside the box is ignored because they do not see or choose not to see the big picture. “Kuhn shows how almost every significant breakthrough in the field of scientific endeavor is first a break with tradition, with old ways of thinking, with old paradigms” (Covey, p. 37), I too seem to be going through a
