Studies show that approximately sixty percent of marriage in America ends in divorce, and this does not seem to be slow down (“Divorce”). Nowadays, divorce is more common as compared to the past. Furthermore, so many issues are related to divorce: couples do not want to compromise about their relationship, women are becoming more independent, and couples are getting married too young. According to Wilson, “couples who live together before marriage have higher divorce rates than those who do not, and less educated couples tend to divorce at higher rates than those with more education” (“Introduction to Divorce”). It is also possible that couples are getting married for the wrong reasons, and they are not putting enough effort into their relationship, and their marriages end in divorce. Children are struggling as well as their parents because when parents become divorced the children become divorced too. After parents get divorced, children face a lot of stress during their lives. In the 21st century, the divorce rate in the American family is increasing because married couples are refusing to compromise about their relationship which is posing a potential danger to children. Lewis, PhD San Francisco State University This follow-up study of 131 children, who were 3–18 years old when their parents divorced in the early 1970s, marks the culmination of 25 years of research. The use of extensive clinical interviews allowed for exploration in great depth of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as they negotiated childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, and adulthood. At the 25-year follow-up, a comparison group of their peers from the same community was added. Described in rich clinical detail, the findings highlight the unexpected gulf between growing up in intact versus divorced families, and the difficulties children of divorce encounter in achieving love, sexual intimacy, and commitment to marriage and parenthood. These findings have significant implications for new clinical and educational interventions. The study we report here begins with the first no-fault divorce legislation in the nation and tracks a group of 131 California children whose parents divorced in the early 1970s. They were seen at regular intervals over the 25-year span that followed. Parents seem to forget that children need stability and protection from the adult issues that can occur in their lives. These decisions will have an effect on children for their entire lives, and parents cannot imagine the long lasting effects. More and more children seem to be on the front lines of these custody battles between parents. Are parents risking the children’s psychological and emotional stability by having the children on the battle ground of a divorce? Children are very resilient but they need parental help to recover from a divorce. The court relies on what the parents are telling them as much as the other professionals and behavioral analysis examiners that have been assigned to the cases. While some parents do not mind this intrusion in to their lives, children feel as if things are not safe or stable. Parents will start to play “tug-of-war” with the children stuck in the middle. Parents who do not settle disputes over custody without the courts help will risk everyone especially the child being hurt.
