You may focus on any four (4) of the following areas: a. family structure b. marriage patterns c. childrearing habits and rituals d. family traditions e. social location (place in society as it relates to age, race, socio-economic status, privilege etc and how it affects the degree of oppression faced) f. employment and career situations g. gender roles h. family bonding i. family leisure time j. other 2. Identify the factors that you consider to be the most influential in affecting any changes you identify, or if you have not noticed a change, discuss those factors which have contributed to the family maintaining similar patterns and practices.

A Better Life

...A Better Life is a movie directed by Chris Weitz illustrating the life of an illegal immigrant from Mexico and his son and a few of the struggles they face. Weitz has made it clear that this film is not to push any kind of political agenda as he says, “I hoped that when people go and see this film, they think it's not a tub-thumping movie.” He has stated that he wanted to make this movie to connect more with his heritage and to highlight a few struggles that immigrants have to face in America today. The film shows what is familiar to me in a few ways because like Luis, I find it hard to relate to my culture. My parents came over to America with nothing, trying to escape a war-torn country still recovering and adapting to a new government. Carlos to me represents a parallel to my parents and Luis is a parallel to me and my brother. I'm the kid that never bothered to really learn Vietnamese as a child. I feel that Luis is the same as me. We are both 'Americanized' and felt no need to learn or remember our cultures until some event or thought opens our eyes to it. In the movie, “Luis sees the culture of his father's part of Mexico.” when Luis says he does not remember his mom singing the song from the rodeo as his dad says she did. It hit home with how Luis did not remember his father singing him songs to put him to sleep as a child because it...

A Better Life

...The movie A Better Life shows the impact of the type of family system that was present in the movie. The family consisted of the father Carlos and the son Luis. Luis was born in the United States but Carlos is still an illegal immigrant. This type of family system really impacted how the father and son lived their lives. The father being a single parent had to try and find work because he was the only provider for his son. Also due to his father working all the time it gave Luis a lot of unsupervised time in which he got into trouble and was hanging out with gang members. Luis and Carlos also did not have much communication between them because Carlos was working long hours this then caused some tension between Luis and Carlos. Carlos was not there much for his son because he had to work to support him and Luis was angry because of that and because of the conditions they had to live in due to of the family system and also their immigrant status. Due to the fact that Luis was a United States citizen but Carlos was an illegal immigrant there was a lot of stress and tension in the household. They both had to watch what they did and where they went because they both knew that if the immigrant status of Carlos was found he would be deported. When Carlos’s truck was stolen he could not go to the police and report it stolen so they could find it because Carlos did not have the legal papers for the truck nor did he have a license. So he had to rely on himself and his son to find the...

My Way to a Better Life

...My Way to a Better Life Tish Hessig Skills for Professional Development Elaine Shilling, Ph.D. March 12, 2005 My Way to a Better Life How many of us settle for the easy way out? This is a question that I have been asking myself for many years now with regard to my career. Over the last year I have been thinking about my life a lot; where I am, where I have been and where I am going. I have discovered that I settled for my current career as an administrative assistant because it was the easiest decision for me. I am realizing now that being back in school will change my life. I am completing the work necessary to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and I still need to learn what I will gain with my college education. How will my life and my daughter’s life change and how will my professional career change once I have earned my college degree? In my present career, a college education will allow me many advantages such as increased earnings, an improved quality of life, more challenging positions to learn and grow, an opportunity to be a member of the management team, and I will be able to mentor others on the importance of a college education. Twenty years ago when I was finishing high school, the only requirement to getting a job was a high school diploma. Today in order to get that same job, we are required to have a college degree. A Better Life Movie Analysis

...Armory Kaiser 27 February 2012 A Better Life Movie Analysis In the movie A Better Life, the Main Character Carlos Galindo is an undocumented immigrant from Mexico who started working as a day labor worker when he first arrived in the country, however he has had steady work from Blasco Martinez who owns a gardening business which he tries to convince Carlos to buy from him as he says he is moving. The idea of being self employed is very appealing to Carlos but he knows he can never afford to do so and the risk of getting caught and deported is very high. Carlos has a son Luis who is reluctant to go to school on a daily basis and gets into trouble as he is influenced by his friends who are part of the South Central gang life style. Carlos and his wife came from Jalisco which is a state in Mexico which is primarily made up of several small villages where "Charros" or Mexican cowboys would get married and head north to start a new life in America. Carlos believed that life in America would be simple in which if you worked hard opportunities would present themselves and you could be happy, that unfortunately was not the case and Carlos's wife ended up leaving him alone with their young son Luis. The main difficulties that Carlos and Luis face are that they live in a rough neighborhood in south central Los Angeles and even though Carlos has what seems to be a steady job with Blasco, Carlos is unable to save up the money needed to move to a better location. The biggest obstacle Carlos...

Technology Making Life Better or Worse

...Technology making life better or worse  Technology has made a big difference in our society such as communication, work, education, and entertainment in good and bad ways. Some people say that technology has made life better with the internet, cell phones and other devices. While others say technology has been making life worse because people are becoming lazy and replace their lives with technology every day. Technology surrounds almost everyone in modern society and it affects our lives in many ways.  People argue that technology can be dangerous because Technology contains information that many would rather it not have. It influences minds in bad ways, and it allows people to share information, which they would otherwise not be able to attain it. Even if a person does not own a computer or have credit cards, there is information on a computer somewhere about everyone. The technology, which is beginning to be disrupted and hacked, it is affecting the minds of young people in ways that could be harmful.  Technology helps us in many ways because it makes life easier but I think we should stop using technology for every task we do. Everywhere I go, I see technology used for the simplest things that anyone can do themselves. For example motion sensors to turn on and off lights and sensors for other similar objects, making everything voice activated,  online shopping instead of walking to the store, reading books and doing homework online instead of paper and pencil, and soon...

A Study on Better Work Life Balance Survey

...SUMMERY This report provides an overview of different types of work-life balance initiatives that have been developed by in the financial institutions of Bangladesh. Governments are increasingly committed to reducing the social, health and business costs of work-life conflict. Several countries have adopted individual pieces of legislation or policies that address some aspect of work-life balance. These initiatives are not necessarily part of a comprehensive program or policy approach to achieve work-life balance, but these measures could be seen as one way to improve an employee's balance between work and other responsibilities. This report shows that there is not likely to be any "one size fits all" answer to work-life balance issues. A variety of approaches are available to support work-life balance, ranging from promotional programs that emphasize the importance of balance and provide support to employers to reduce the business costs associated with work-life conflict, to legislation that supports parents with care giving responsibilities. It is clear that improving work-life balance is an important component of the policy agenda for many industrial countries, and the issue is likely to become even more important in the future. BACKGROUND The first Work-Life Balance Survey (WLB1) was conducted by the Department for Education and Employment in 2000 to assess the extent to which employers operated work life balance practices; to see whether employees felt that existing practices...

“If You Aren’t Making Someone Else’s Life Better, Then You Are Wasting Your Time.”

...Essay #1:Tech Ventures “If you aren’t making someone else’s life better, then you are wasting your time.” (Will Smith) Although this quote by Will Smith is only a few years old, its basic message can be traced back to the Greek and Roman philosophers. Even then these famous philosophers taught their scholars that helping other people accomplish their goals or generally helping or saving other people from their reality is the real essence of life. In my opinion this statement is true because helping other people in need makes you not only their savior but also helps you feel good about yourself. Trying to improve our world is something that is a vital part of our lives due to the fact that no one wants to leave this place without others remembering what you accomplished in life. At some point in life everyone comes across the question: “What did I do with my life? Was my life worth living? Will I be remembered or forgotten?” In this short essay I want to evaluate the relevance of this quote in our everyday life and afterwards focus on its influence on entrepreneurship before coming to my conclusion. The everyday decisions we make may seem small for that particular moment but they add up to the big picture called life. That is why every decision you take should be one that has a bigger meaning to you. Nobody will remember you for how many episodes of “House of Cards” you have watched the last few weeks or how many hours you spent partying or sleeping. People will always be...

...effects that takes place in our lives as positives or negative. NBA players are no different. They have goals, are determined to achieve them and use life challenges as motivation. Neither is better than each other but they use their life styles from their childhood as motivation to do better, to be better. Isn't that our goal in life, try to find a way to do better for you, your friends and family? We are born to want more, to live more and to be more than the last. NBA players all have different reason and paths to where they are now but they are no different than the next. Some players lived difficult lives and some have them planned out, but both paths have a major impact on how they will play in the NBA. Motivation has a way of pushing people to do more than they are capable of. For example Lebron James, a very talented NBA player, uses his difficult childhood as the foundation for his motivation. He never lived an easy life, whether it was growing up with a single mother or living in a bad neighborhood, life always had it out for him. He didn’t let that bring him down; instead he used that to his advantage. Freedman (2008) stated the Lebron James said “I think the reason why I'm the person who I am today is because I went through those tough times when I was younger”. Growing up with a bad past or a difficult life...
