Profit or livelihood? A hundred years ago, people thought differently about the environment. They thought about it as much more than just a profit. In some ways they may have even thought about it as some of us think about our own sense of place; a place of serenity and livelihood. In a Land Remembered the characters have a very respectable yet dependent relationship with the environment, in which they live and learn from the land every day. The land was practically untouched and pristine; all due to the interactions of the characters with their environment and how they thought they should treat the land. According to the Earth Charter principle one, “we are supposed to respect earth and life in all of its diversity”. Specifically, I think Tobias learns to “recognize that all beings are interdependent and every form of life has value regardless of its worth to human beings ("The Earth," 2016).” He learns that just because he is a human all the diversity of life is just as important as his and what he wants to accomplish. Throughout their journey herding cattle to Punta Rassa the environment tests Tobias and his family. Tobias thinks it would be smart to take a short cut through the swamps to cut down on his travel time. He quickly learns that cutting through certain parts of the environment can be dangerous and should not be accessed. While cutting through the swamps the water becomes very deep and alligators living in that part of the swamp attack Tobias, his family, and a few cows. I believe he acquires a true sense of respect and knowledge from his experience. The environment is set up the way it is for a reason and not even man can control that. Even humans can be belittled by the environment if we are not careful and considerate. According to the article, Urban planning with respect to environmental quality and human well-being, “The successful maintenance of representative habitats can be viewed as a series of partly overlapping and complementary “green infrastructures” in the landscape, each of which has various properties to which species are adapted (Panagopoulos, n.d., p. 139).” I think that Tobias’s experience with the alligators reflects this statement because all we must respect the environment, even though our environment may overlap with other spieces in a manner that is displeasing, because each species has adapted to their own niche and we needs to learn to live respectively among one another.
