...Review essay on Romeo and Juliet On 27 April 2012, I watched Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. It was directed by Ivan Heng from W!LD RICE. It brought laughter and tears to me, from the witty scenes to the tragic parts. This version was an exciting, refreshing, contemporary twist of the classic love story. The set, costumes, music, sound and casting gave this play a whole new spin to it. I felt the casting was perfect. The main characters, Romeo, played by Hansel Tan and Juliet, played by Julie Wee, really brought out the deep emotions of their characters. Their chemistry was amazing and it wasn’t hard to imagine them as star-crossed teenage lovers. Romeo’s character was strong, with Hansel pulling of his intense feelings brilliantly, such as the part in Act 3, Scene 3 that starts with “Tis torture, and not mercy” when he talks about being banished. Juliet’s transformation from a wide-eyed girl into a self-assured, loyal, and capable woman was well portrayed throughout the play. One memorable character was Nurse, played by Neo Swee Lin. Though I felt she that at some points her Singaporean accent would emerge, it somehow worked to make the character funnier and she injected much humour into the piece with her frequently inappropriate remarks and speeches. Act two, Scene three, where she meets Romeo was especially funny when she kept going for Romeo’s chest. It was hilarious! ...The F.A.T (Frustration, Anxiety, Tension) City Workshop was a class titled “How Difficult Can This Be?” given by Richard D. Lavoie to a diverse group of individuals. The goal of the workshop was to let the attenders experience the frustration, anxiety, and tension faced by children with learning disabilities. Mr. Lavoie was able to, through a series of scenarios, give viewers an inside look into what it is like to have a learning disability. The workshop was held in a classroom with teachers, social workers, parents and siblings of children with a learning disability, psychologists, bank executives, rehabilitation counselors, and children with learning disabilities. The scenarios used by Mr. Lavoie gave us an inside glimpse of what it is like to be a learning disabled student. He began by creating some anxiety in the room. He was speaking very quickly and moving from one person to another without much hesitation. He would call on a “student” and have them answer a question. One specific person got an answer wrong and Mr. Lavoie quickly came back with a sarcastic comment. He went on to explain that “Anytime you use sarcasm with kids, understand that you have created a victim.” (Lavoie & Rosen, 1989). We, as teachers and parents must be cognizant when using this sort of comment while speaking to our children. The first thing that I liked about this concert was the atmosphere because I saw how the audience enjoyed the music played by my talent professor and the amazing voices of the vocalists. Every artist was welcomed with a warm applause from every single person. This concert was about “Holiday Selections” where famous songs from different cultural background were sung by powerful vocalists. In Paperman, a beautifully animated short film, a guy and a girl experience meant to be love due to fateful and magical events. Although no sound or color, this short film perfectly captures the beauty of love and fate. Paperman is a rated G short film directed by John Kahrs and produced by Walt Disney. It was released in 2012, and won an oscar for best short film of 2012. Although no sound, the music in the background composed by Christophe Beck perfectly sets the mood, so you have a feel of their emotions. Paperman is about a guy who tries to get a girls attention after seeing her for the first time. This short film tells a story of a guy who is hopeful, unpredictable, and somewhat romantic, and a girl who is pretty, shy, and punctual, who first meet at a train station, and pretty much experience ‘love at first sight’. Sadly, they end up on different paths until later that day. While upset over the girl, the guy was at work and happened to see the girl of his dreams once again on the opposite skyscraper.
