The United States has built up interesting relationship with China. The two nations seemed to have succeeded to the opposing ideologies of capitalism and communism respectively. Many people expected that the U.S. took the initiative in enhancing relations between the two countries when the president Obama visited Beijing in November 2009. Unfortunately, however, the meeting of the two presidents produced further political disputes. Major issues I found in the article are: the currency raise of China, China’s cooperation on Iran sanctions, and the future relationship of the two countries. Here, I want to fortify global attention and cooperation to relieve the issues.
First of all, China refused to accept economic suggestions from the U.S. China disagreed to raise its currency value and observe Obama’s cooperation plan. To be specific, China had maintained its currency against dollar. Many people, especially American manufacturers, blamed that China had benefited from such an unfair economic strategy in the global market. Though Obama wanted to forge a friendly partnership with the Chinese government, such a stubborn attitude of China created considerable animosity in the United States. Accordingly, the U.S. government decided to impose a great deal of tariffs on imported goods from China.
Secondly, China hesitated to support the U.S. sanctions on Iran at the United Nations Security Council. Obama attempted to pass a resolution to publish sanctions against Iran to prevent further nuclear production. Because it was one of the five veto-wielding nations, China took a great influence on the U.S. decision. Though China partly agreed with the plan, however, it failed to draw a perfect cooperation because Iran was one of the largest crude oil suppliers of China. I thought that China also had a geographic advantage on dealing with Middle Eastern problems because it shared its southwestern border with Pakistan.
