On Giles' Critique “a song in the front yard”

On Giles' Critique “a song in the front yard” Ron Giles (Cited in Lynn, 2004) states that Gwendolyn Brooks “a song in the front yard” tells the story of a young woman who is waiting for the day she can break free of the constraints of her upbringing and live a wild, fun-filled life. Giles further states that this young girl in the poem has already had a taste of that life, and is not simply engaging in the conflict of the innocent upbringing and the urges of puberty; she is longing for the day she can completely break free of her mother's rule. Giles begins his critique by offering the arguments for the Freudian interpretation. He tells what other critics have offered, such as Ronald Janssen's claim that the poem is an id/ego conflict, a young woman's mental exploration of sexuality, and then details his own claim that it goes even further (Giles, cited in Lynn). Using lines from the poem, Giles attempts to support the claim that the girl has already had some experience, some knowledge of the wilder life; Giles claims she has already had “a peek” at it, a sample of it which makes her want more. Giles compares different interpretations, not taking it so far as Shaw (Cited in Lynn) who suggests she is willing to endure spiritual death, but believing that she has already made the choice to experience life without the constraints of morals or propriety, and is merely waiting for the change to complete her transition. In reading the poem multiple times and looking specifically for Giles' indication that the girl/young woman has already made her choice and already tasted a little of the wild life, I have to disagree. The first line of the poem is very clear: “I've stayed in the front yard all my life” (Brooks, cited in Lynn, 2004) She didn't say she has lived there, which would suggest that she might have ventured away to the wilder side from time to time only to return, but plainly that she has “stayed” there. Further, the difference between wanting a peek, as the girl states, and actually experiencing, is significant. The girl says “I want a peek.” She doesn't wish for another peek or a longer peek, or anything to suggest she has already been there. She sees it, but she has not yet experienced it. Giles' uses the line, “A girl gets sick of a rose” to support his claim that she is worldly, citing the use of third person as an indicator of greater maturity, that it requires “sophistication” to know the rose is a symbol of wholesomeness and that “gets sick of” is “winking sarcasm,” In this analysis Giles is making broad assumptions within a poem that in reality talks very plainly. Giles offers nothing to support that use of third person is a sign of maturity. A teenage girl is easily going to be aware of a rose as a symbol of romance rather than sex. Finally, there is no inherent sarcasm in the phrase “gets sick of;” the girl has already made it clear that she doesn't want the pure and safe life, she wants the wild and uncertain life. Janssen's and others' (Cited in Lynn, 2004) id/ego interpretation which Giles' claims does not go far enough, is supported, because the poem speaks of desire not-yet-experienced. The girl says, “I want to be a bad woman, too” and “I want a good time today.” These are expressions of desire, but there is no indication of activity. She has been invited, as suggested when Johnnie “sold our back gate,” which symbolically gives easier access to the world she wants, but she doesn't indicate in any way that she has passed through that gate or been to see Johnnie, only watched and wanted. She is waiting, as Giles' states, for the chance or the courage to venture through the opening that Johnnie has provided, but she's still only watching.

A Song In The Front Yard Poem Analysis

...As the saying goes, the grass is always greener on the other side. This is the case in Gwendolyn Brooks’ “a song in the front yard,” which tells the story of a young girl who yearns to live a life different from her own. This is something that just about anyone can relate to, whether you’re rich or poor. This poem starts off with the narrator saying “I’ve stayed in the front yard all my life.” (Brooks). This metaphor sets the scene for the rest of the poem, which talks of her desire to “peek at the back” (Brooks). The front yard symbolizing the safe, upper-class life that she has been privileged enough to be born into, and the backyard being the more dangerous, promiscuous life that she craves. Brooks manages to accurately portray the secret desires of all adolescents to experience the lives of others, not realizing that these lives come with their own set of ups and downs. “A song in the front yard” is told from the perspective of a seemingly young girl. From the way that this girl describes the “wonderful” yet “rough and untended” backyard, the reader can infer that this is all just a dream of hers...

...focus on the theme of ordinary life but in her later work she focuses on politics and racism (Baym). Brooks speaks of life as a sheltered young girl who seeks a taste of the darker side in her poem, “a song in the front yard.” Brooks uses a metaphor in the first stanza of her poem to compare the young, innocent, and sheltered child to that of a beautiful rose: I’ve stayed in the front yard all of my life, I want a peek at the back Where it’s rough and untended and hungry weed grows. A girl gets sick of a rose (Gates, Jr. and Smith). The young girl seeks more understanding of a world she can only observe. Like many woman of the time, she is limited by standards set by others. In the case of the young girl it is her mother who doesn’t not allow her to play with the “charity children (Gates, Jr. and Smith).” In the case of many African American women in society at the time, it is society and racist practices that all women must overcome. Brooks’ final stanza is a defiant jab at the perimeters set around the young girl: But I say it’s fine. Honest, I do. And I’d like to be a bad woman, too, And wear the brave stockings of night-black lace And strut down the streets with pain on my face (Gates, Jr. and Smith). Despite never having been allowed to leave her front porch the young girl watched the prostitute in awe. The young girl doesn’t understand the other woman’s hardships; she only admires her freedom. ...A Song in the Front Yard by Gwendolyn Brooks is about a girl that always played in the front yard. As time went by she watch as the kids in the back yard played and had more fun than she did. Now she is hungry for that fun even if it means being bad. She wants to live life and not be stuck in the front yard. Because I could not stop for Death by Emily Dickinson is about death. Stating that she could not stop for death means that the speaker didn't have a choice about when she was to die. The family moved to Chicago shortly after her birth, and despite her extensive travels and periods in some of the major universities of the country, she has remained associated with the city's South Side. What her strong family unit lacked in material wealth was made bearable by the wealth of human capital that resulted from warm interpersonal relationships. When she writes about families that--despite their daily adversities--are not dysfunctional, Gwendolyn Brooks writes from an intimate knowledge reinforced by her own life Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born 10 December 1830 – 15 May 1886, was an American poet. ...culture of both countries was fascinated cultural. From personal experience, I would say there is a huge difference between Nicaragua and the United States of America. Nicaragua has been through many tragedies in the past several years. There is a difference in culture between Nicaragua and the United States that can easily be seen in their holidays, such as Christmas where everybody celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with songs, holiday vacation, and food. First, the holidays in Nicaragua and United States have many differences. For example, In Nicaragua the Christmas celebration starts one week before Christmas day. Christmas also begins with the “Posadas” that are typical Nicaraguan customs. Posadas are special celebrations that people attend, which consist of singing different songs in the name of Jesus Christ in front of each house in the neighborhood. On the other hand here in the United State they celebrate singing carols to Jesus Christ .In both countries we put a Christmas tree and we sending greeting cards. In both countries we decorate our houses and yards with lights and different ornaments. In addition, both of them give vacation to the employees on December 25. The difference is that in Nicaragua people usually don’t work the whole week prior to Christmas day. Contrasting in United State they only give one day of vacation. ...Our Little Piece of Heaven Janet Vint ENG 121 Professor Adam Deutsch January 25, 2013 As I sit and think of all the places that I love, our front porch is the one place that sticks out the most. No matter what season, there is nothing better than taking in all the wonderful sights and sounds of my neighborhood. Our front porch is an awesome place to sit back and relax while you enjoy the wonderful smelling flowers during spring, the warm breeze of a summer night or listening to the crunch of the leaves during the fall. Our front porch is the gathering place for my family to come and relax, whether it is with a soothing drink, a Stephen King book, to take a break from life’s obstacles or to watch my son play carefree. No matter the season, or the reason, our front porch offers comfort, relaxation and memories to all who visit. One spring, several years ago, we had purchased new porch furniture and could not wait to get home with it and try it out. Later that day, my husband and I began to sit down in the enormous fluffy tan cushions on the swing; we both turned around at the same time and looked at each with our heads laid back and started laughing hysterically. We could not believe the difference it made by just some new furniture. We sat there for a while taking in all the surroundings, from the bright red cardinals flying back and forth carrying on conversations, to the distant sound and smell of someone that was cutting their grass for the first time that season. The...

Blink-182 Essay

...Bobbing my head to what I used to have thought was good and intriguing music, I looked outside the clear bus window. My red brick 1980s house loomed into view. The bus stopped, and I stood up, walking through the crowded isle filled with bodies just like mine. I nearly fell down the black steps, and almost landed in the dirt with my face. Brushing myself off from the two-second rush of adrenaline, I turned left and crossed in front of the canary-yellow colored school bus. I crossed the murky-green grass of my front yard. I took a deep breath of air, and instantly, my lungs were filled with a very pungent fungus smell- from the fertilizer, I had assumed. I padded up the four red brick stairs, leading up to my front door. I flung my newly 13-year-old body into the doorway inside. “Sofia! Mom said to go clean your room!” my little sister called. I sighed, and trudged into the stairway, leading to my bedroom. I reached the top of the stairs, and opened my door. God, I hate that pale blue color on my walls. It looks TERRIBLE! I thought, and turned to the drawer that was attached to my bleach-colored wooden bed frame. About time I clean out this drawer! I thought to myself. Opening up the forbidden drawer locked inside the prison of my room, I peered into the crowded shelf that held my old and forgotten materials. Sifting through the junk, something shiny caught my eye. I reached for it and pulled it out, examining it’s glimmering circular shape. I flipped over, and saw 3...

The First Hunt

...The First Hunt Imagine having the feeling of complete serenity as you lay still waiting; listening to every broken stick, crushed leaf, and bird chirp. Waiting for the footsteps of a deer or the image of one in the distance to fill your veins with adrenaline which gives you that feeling you dream about. All this leading up to one pull of a trigger, sending a message to your brain that tells you you’ll be a hunter for the rest of your life. This image was a very important part of my life. My brother started hunting when he was around 12 or 13 years old with my dad and I was too young to hunt. It all started with only being able to go out with them and watch them shoot deer, rabbits, turkey, and birds. I was always anxious to be able to do it myself because I thought I would be good at it and enjoy it. All I had was a pellet gun, and I was limited to showing my skills shooting by shooting bottle caps from a distance. I loved impressing my dad with my shots and looked forward to showing him how I could hunt when I was of age. Eventually I was 12 years old , got my hunting license, and a permit and that November I was ready for my first hunt. That weekend I went down to my dad’s it was all preparation. We had a checklist to make sure the night before we had everything laid out for us in the morning. We needed gloves, pants, shirts, coats, ammo, flashlight, seats, and of course the rifle. We couldn’t afford to forget anything in the morning because there was no turning back...

You then become worried and you proceed to switch lanes to ensure your safety, and as you approach the car, you see that the driver is face down in their cellphone, and because of the size of phones these days, you realized that they almost cause an accident for Facebook? Really, Facebook? What happens when your friend comes to pick you up and as you guys head out for a night on the town, your friend is all consumed with texting in the middle of driving, and she inadvertently veers over into the next lane cutting a vehicle almost causing a collision? Your life could have been lost in the blink of an eye, all because of that darn cellphone. As you continue to read this paper, it will show you that texting while driving is just as dangerous and driving while under the influence of alcohol. Cellphones have been around for centuries. The modern cellphone has only had the capability for texting since 1997 when Nokia introduced the 9000i with a full QWERTY keyboard (A Brief History of Text Messaging, 2015). Since its time, the cellphone has become interactive; we now have the luxury of not even needing a personal computer, because cellphones have evolved into just that a fully functional complete communication device. Chinese Painting - Qingming on the River

It is often practised by artists working for the royal court or in independent workshops. * Ink and wash painting, in Chinese Shui-mo or (水墨[1]) also loosely termed watercolour or brush painting, and also known as "literati painting", as it was one of the "Four Arts" of the Chinese Scholar-official class.[2] In theory this was an art practised by gentlemen, a distinction that begins to be made in writings on art from the Song dynasty, though in fact the careers of leading exponents could benefit considerably.[3] This style is also referred to as "xie yi" (寫意) or freehand style.
