He started his story by explaining that, as most Parisians, on the night of the 13th November, he was at home watching television and following the news as journalists themselves discovered the tragic events one by one. “The number of casualties were rising by the minute, it was awfully shocking” he said. Hughes’ poem “Your Paris”, from his anthology of poems entitled “Birthday Letters”, is his representation of their time in Paris, as it shows his perspective on the city and on each other. Plath’s journal entries from March 6 and 26, 1956 show her perspective and purpose of her first visit to Paris, which was without Hughes to resume a relationship with an ex-lover (Richard Sassoon). Both texts show each composer’s outlook on their visit to Paris and the experiences that have shaped their perspective on Paris. The purpose of Ted Hughes’ “Birthday Letters” was to “open a direct, private, inner contact” with Sylvia Plath and to “evoke her presence” to himself. The series of 88 poems, in which all but two are addressed to Plath, were written around 30 years after Plath committed suicide. The poems show Hughes’ raw emotion, passion and personal opinion on their relationship, showing why he has chosen the form of poetry to show us his thoughts. However, Plath’s journal entries show her reflecting on what happened on her first trip to Paris and how this has influenced her attitude on their honeymoon. Movies Paris brûle-t-il? by René Clément and Diplomacy by Volker Schlöndorff rekindled discussion about this quite mysterious negotiation between these two men. How did they manage to reach an agreement? What were the terms of the deal? Was there even a negotiation? This topic caught my attention for it changed the course of History. Had the German burnt Paris, the French would never have forgotten it and the European Union would not have emerged six years after those events (the CECA was created in 1951). I am deeply pro-European and found of History. As a result it amuses me to the how fragile basis of the Union were. I also like to think that one man, no matter the context and the lack of leverage –we are talking of one man trying to talk a German general out of following Hitler’s orders- can have so much impact on thanks to his words only. Additional focus will center on black artists turning to Africa as a source and facture in the art. Last but not least, the effort of Author Schomburg to collect and house international works about blacks will be addressed.
