AP Environmental Science Class Reflection

It wasn’t because I loved the teacher or that the class was extremely easy and nor was it due to the class being an advanced placement course. No, the main reason I enjoyed AP Environmental Science so much was that it opened my eyes to see past my own problems and to the problems of the world. The class taught me the to not only see but also understand others perspectives. Even though I may not agree with what a person does or what they believe I can usually grasp the reasoning behind their actions and thoughts. Before taking Environmental Science I was wasteful and unaware of the affect my actions had. I used to leave the water running while I brushed my teeth and never thought anything of it. However, after we conducted a lab, where we calculated

...an award winning experiment. Quite frankly, my classmates doubted my research abilities as well. Considering that I never scored the highest on tests and constantly asked questions in class, certain students would categorize me as someone that struggled in that class. One student even said “no” when I asked if they thought that I could get past the first round in NYSCEF. Although it was disheartening to hear that someone one thought that I was incapable of developing a valid experiment, I used that negativity to work hard and prove those students wrong. Only then did I realize that I just might have a future in science. Fortunately, I disregarded the lack of support, continued working on my experiment, and submitted it to NYSCEF for review. Not only did I make it past the first round, but my experiment was also selected for the final...

Cars

...Breaking Into Cars—Stephen I had never broken into a car before. We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for Humanity work site. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van. Someone picked a coat hanger out of the dumpster, handed it to me, and took a few steps back. “Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?” “Why me?” I thought. More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window’s seal like I’d seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I’d been in this type of situation before. In fact, I’d been born into this type of situation. My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft...

Previous publications on the Work System Method and also on Design Science concepts and their relevance for Systems Analysis and Design are reviewed. We suggest some directions for further work on the diffusion of work system method ideas in systems analysis and design organized along the conceptual framework for IS research by Hevner, March, Park and Ram. Keywords: systems development, work system method, systems analysis and design. 1. INTRODUCTION Hevner et al (2004) presented seminal directions for work in design science within the Information Systems field. These lead subsequently to an increased interest in research in Systems Analysis and Design (SA&D) (see Bajaj et al., 2005; Iivari et al., 2005 and Harris et al., 2006). The importance of Systems Analysis and Design for any program of study in information systems and, we may add, to the field of IS development is well summarized by Harris et al. (2006:242). Among the most important aspects of the relevance of SA&D, Harris et al. (2006) list development of analytical and problem...

Our objective is to improve the understanding of how entrepreneurship policies can lead to socially inclusive growth at the BOP. Drawing on data collected from Brazilian tourism destinations with varying entrepreneurship, innovation, and social inclusion policies, we argue that weak institutions coupled with alert entrepreneurs encourage destructive outcomes, especially if entrepreneurship policies are based solely on economic indicators. Policies addressing both economic and social perspectives may foster more productive entrepreneurial outcomes, albeit at a more constrained economic pace. The study extends the related BOP, entrepreneurship, global value chain, and sustainable tourism literatures by examining the poor as entrepreneurs, the role of local innovation, and how entrepreneurship policies generate different social impacts within poor communities.
