Part 1: Sharing and Securing Network Resources
1) Sharing Folders
In this exercise, you will create a shared folder ECE_Data on the server. a. Log on to server as domain administrator. b. Create a ECE_Data folder in your root directory (C:). c. Open the Properties dialog box for the ECE_Data folder, and then click the Sharing tab. d. Click Share this folder. The share name defaults to the name of the folder. e. In the Comment box, type Share Data and then click OK. How does Windows Explorer change the appearance of the ECE_Data folder to indicate that it is a shared folder?

2) Assigning Shared Folder Permissions
In this exercise, you will modify the default share permissions on the ECE_Data folder and configure READ and FULL CONTROL permissions to ECE Program Review staff and ECE Lecturers. ECE Program Review staff will have Full Control permissions and ECE Lecturers will have read access. Then, you will test the permissions to that folder. 1. Determine the current permissions for the ECE_Data shared folder. a. Open the Properties dialog box for ECE_Data. b. On the Sharing tab, click Permissions. What are the default permissions for the ECE_Data shared folder? Read Only For Everyone 2. Remove the default permissions and assign the Full Control permission to the local Administrators group. a. In the Permission for ECE_Data dialog box, verify that Everyone is selected, and then click Remove. b. Click Add. In the Select Users, Computers, or Groups dialog box, add Administrator, and then click OK. What type of access does the Administrators group have? The default access for admin is default. c. Under Permission, allow the Administrators group the Full Control permissions and then click OK. d. Click OK to close the ECE_Data Properties dialog box, and then close Windows Explorer.
3) Connecting to a Shared Folder
In this exercise, you will log on as a user from ECE Program Review and ECE Lecturers groups to verify the access to the ECE_Data folder. 1. Connect to the shared folder on your XP. a. Log on to the network using Angelina Jones account (member of ECE Program Review group). b. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type \\Server and the click OK. c. Double‐click ECE_Data.

Try to create a text file in the ECE_Data folder. Ajones can create a file because she has a full control permission d. Close the ECE_Data on Server window and Log off. e. Log on to the network using Brat Pitt account (member of ECE Lecturers group). f. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type \\Server and the click OK. g. Double‐click ECE_Data. Try to create a text file in the ECE_Data folder. Brat Pitt unable create, because he doesn’t have permission. h. Close the ECE_Data on Server window and Log off. 2. Map a network drive to the shared folder on the XP by using Map Network Drive. a. Log on as the Domain Administrator. b. Right‐click My Network Places, and then click Map Network Drive. c. In the Drive box, click M. d. In the Folder box, type, \\Server\ECE_Data. e. Clear the Reconnect at logon check box. f. To complete the connection, click Finish. Windows Explorer opens, shown the contents of the new shared folder. Notice that the title bar displays ECE_Data on Server. g. Close the ECE_Data on Server window. h. Open My Computer, and then locate ECE_Data on Server (M:). How does My Computer indicate that this drive points to a remote shared folder? My Computer uses an icon that shows a network cable attached to the drive.

4) Removing a Folder Share In this exercise, you will stop sharing the ECE_Data folder on your server. 1. Log on to the Server as Domain Administrator and stop sharing the ECE_Data folder. a. Log on to the server as administrator. b. Open the Properties dialog box for the ECE_Data folder, and then click the Sharing tab. c. Click Do Not Share this folder, and then click OK. Windows no longer display the icon that identify ECE_Data as a shared folder. d. Close Windows Explorer. e. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type \\Server and the click OK. Were you able to make a connection to \\Server\ECE_Data. No the file is no longer shared f. Click OK to close the message, click Cancel to close the Run dialog box.
