The main social, historical, and cultural contexts of the work is that the work discusses about World War II and the ignorance of the people in the United States. Abraham Rattner (1893-1978) was driven by an inner need to create. He paints watercolors to record his many travels. In 1960s, Rattner became increasingly interested in social issue, including the civil rights movement and anti-war protest. Most of his paintings reflects an immediacy he felt towards these issues. The primary purpose of the art work is to bring awareness to the American people that World War II is happening in other countries and people in the United States should open wide their eyes to see all these happenings.
