Tragedy and The Human Conditions Essay:
Abusive Power

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. ” In a statement by Abraham Lincoln it is identified that the greatness of man is tested by how he utilizes his power. As demonstrated in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, and The Time Magazine article Adolf Hitler, one can see how the abuse of power creates chaos in society. By analyzing the actions of the characters Macbeth, Abigail Williams, and the character Adolf Hitler, it is evident how the misuse of power will lead to the loss of structure in society.

“Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” A statement by Lord Acton which illustrates that those who gain power ultimately become corrupted by it - thus leading one to abuse their power. This statement is well demonstrated in the actions of the character Macbeth, from William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, in his rise to power from Thane of Glamis to the King of Scotland. Within the first scene of the play, Macbeth is given the gift of knowledge of the future, by the three witches, which he ultimately uses to gain more power. “All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Glamis ... All hail, Macbeth, thou shalt be king hereafter!” (I.iii. 48-50). When given this prophecy from the three witches, Macbeth utilizes this information, once he becomes Thane of Cawdor, to plan the death of King Duncan. The power of knowledge is not the only power that he possesses, “ He’s here in double trust: First, as I am his kinsman....against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself”. In this quote Macbeth demonstrates that he is trusted by Duncan for two reasons. Firstly because he is "his kinsman and his subject," so he would naturally be repulsed by the idea of killing Duncan. Secondly, Macbeth is hosting the king in his home; Duncan would assume that Macbeth would be sheltering him because of this, so he would not suspect his host to be the murderer. Macbeth is a beloved cousin and trusted friend and King Duncan provides him with the power of trust; he uses this to an advantage to gain the perfect opportunity to kill Duncan at his manor. When Macbeth murders Duncan, the natural order is disrupted in the kingdom as demonstrated by the quote by Macduff “Most sacrilegious murder hath broke ope the Lord’s anointed temple, and stole thence the life of the building…Murder and treason!” (II.iii. 70-74). Macbeth has committed an immoral and unjust act which marks the beginning of disorder as the great chain of being is seen to be corrupt causing the natural world to be chaotic. This treacherous act initiates the breakdown of law and order in the kingdom since the King is slain and the rightful heirs do not ascend the throne. The initial murder of Duncan leds to other murders, so Macbeth can maintain its power. As shown by the following quote “I think our country sinks beneath the yoke. It weeps, it bleeds, and each new day a gash is added to her wounds. I think withal there would be hands uplifted in my right; and here from gracious England have I offer of goodly thousands.” (IV.iii. 40-45), it is evident that the society has lost its structure and the subjects are also suffering. Overall, the actions of Macbeth unleash a chaotic kingdom and society, and ravish its populations, all due to his abuse of power. Unfortunately this would not be the last time in history that the abuse of power by one individuals disrupts the structure a society; Abigail Williams is another character that possesses this damaging trait.

“The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse.” Edmund Burke stated that the more power you have, the more capable you are of using it for your own benefit, or worse, for the non-benefit of others. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, the character Abigail Williams demonstrates how her actions and abuse of power created absolute chaos within her community. Abigail Williams is a character in the play who commits adultery with John Proctor, a married man. Once the court questions her about witchcraft and possible witches, she is given an opportunity to get rid of her enemies since she has the power over the court. Within the first act of The Crucible, Abigail Williams is given the opportunity and the power to blame others in order to redeem herself, when her uncle Parris, interrogates her about the rumors which blacken her name and reputation. He also tells her about the condition of his comatose daughter she says“… I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget with the Devil!…” (Miller 48). Abigail is later given the power by the society, who has become obsessed with the fear of witches, and misuses it to fulfil her ambition of becoming John Proctor’s lover once again. This is identified in a discussion between John Proctor and Reverend Hale. “I never knew until tonight that the world is gone daft with this nonsense.”“Nonsense! Mister, I have myself examined Tituba, Sarah Good, and numerous others, that have confessed to dealing with the Devil. They have confessed it.”“And why not, if they must hang for denyin’ it? There are them that will swear to anything before they’ll hang; have you ever thought of that?”(page.68-69). Using the power given to her by the church and the courts, Abigail abuses her power once again to have Elizabeth Proctor thrown in jail with charges of being involved in witchcraft. “What say you? A warrant for my wife? Who charged her?...Abigail Williams? On what proof, what proof!”(The Crucible. Act II). The above mentioned conversation reveals that even the characters most active in the witch trials have noticed that Abigail has been given too much power and that her actions have greatly and negatively impacted the community. Her devious actions have secretly influenced the community to the point where she abuses her power. Other members of the community also realize that by accusing innocent people of witchcraft they can gain from the accused losses. This eventually leads to total chaos in Salem. As judge Danforth explains “Them that will not confess will hang. Twelve are already executed; the names of these seven are given out and, and the village expects to see them die this morning” (pg 129). The community is in state of panic as Abigail’s actions have lead in widespread panic and animosity within the people. Arthur Miller’s play demonstrates that abuse of power by one person can break down the law and order of the community resulting in panic and magnification of the situation. After thoroughly analyzing the play The Crucible, it is apparent that Abigail Williams fully abuses her power within the community in an attempt to, firstly clear her name, but more importantly to become the desire of John Proctor’s affections once again.

“The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. When you abuse it, it reverses on you and it hurts you” When you gain power, you are responsible to use it properly for the betterment of your community and not abuse it for your personal gains. Abusing power not only hurts the society, but in the end it will also hurt the individual abusing it. All these hold true in the case of Adolf Hitler, “he came to power in January 1933 by the most legitimate means. His Nationalist Socialist Party won a majority in the parliamentary elections. The aging Field Marshal Paul ...the beginning of the Third Reich, which, according to Hitler, would last 1,000 years” (time magazine 2). Once in power, Hitler swiftly removed members of other opposing political parties such as communists by imprisoning and executing their leaders. Hitler later blames the Jews for Germany’s defeat in WWI and Germany’s constant economic problems after the war. “And finally, why did he invest so much energy in his hatred of Jews? Why did the night trains that took them to their death...will be long remembered, for it has evocative names that paralyze men's hearts with terror: Auschwitz, Treblinka and Belzec.”(time magazine 3) As demonstrated in this quote, by accusing the Jews for Germany’s problems and removing the political opposition, Hitler managed to gain absolute power for himself. He used his power in an unreasonable and unintelligent manner; he abused it by making irrational and inessential decisions. Hitler’s power was further expanded by the policy of appeasement pursued by the foreign nations in order to keep Germany happy . This led to build up of Hitler’s power and Germany’s military power and the result of this is the invasion of Poland and start of WWII. The people of Germany did not oppose to Hitler’s reckless decisions which gave him the confidence and motivation to continue with his rulings; he abuses his power and the world suffers for it. Hitler’s ambitions and unchecked abuse of power lead to deaths of millions of people, near complete destruction of Germany, genocide against the Jews and other minorities and many other horrific crimes. Hitler’s abuse of power broke the political, ethnic, and financial structure of the entire world.

“Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power. ” As Abraham Lincoln once identified, one’s inner intentions do not emerge until they gain power. A man’s personality is expressed by how he uses his power for either the betterment or deterioration of his society. When one is examining the characters Macbeth, Abigail Williams and Adolf Hitler, one can see that their abuse of power ultimately causes chaos to society. Their irrational and destructive decisions completely and utterly corrupts the structure and sanity of their surroundings; their need for power causes them to misuse it in order for them to attain what they desire most while neglecting the thoughts of the people in society.

...Q1. Rank in order the new actions according to how employees will react-for example, from that’s fine to that’s overkill to that’s insane?? Answer: - Thermostats protected by locked boxes, will set at 80* in the summer and 70* in winter. It represents these temperatures are the allowed ranges, not the actual set points.  We usually set the temperature between 76 and 80 during the summer and between 66 and 68 in the winter when in heating mode. So, I would have opinion that employees would have find it ‘’OVERKILL’’. Few suggestions that would make a company to energy oriented usage. a. Keep the air conditioner not cooler then 78* and the heater not warmer than the 68*, set the AC temp higher or the heat temp. Lower when you are away, or turn it off completely if no required. b. Microwaves, personal refrigerators, and fans will be banned if any electrical cord found to be cut, THATS SEEMS TO BE INSANE. As it cannot be considered as the fault of all employees, it make occur by default as well. c. Use the ceiling fans found in all the rooms to stay cooler and to help AC do its job. As well as computers turned off after 7pm would make me feel THATS FINE, as it helps to save energy. d. Recycling barrels availability throughout the building seems to be impressive idea. So employees will consider it THATS FINE Q2. Then think about any actions that you and the local managers may be able to take that will offset some of the resistance of employees. For example, can...

There are those who are lost in the minefield of power and politics, some of these managers suffer not only a career crisis, often they fall on their sword in an act of career suicide. Managing the delicate balance of politics, power and influence can ensure that the manager survives their trip through the minefield. What can influence the way a manager or supervisor navigates this minefield, besides experiencing it firsthand, learning about the short comings of other managers and supervisors who share their story. During the course of the project, Tom Green and his experience at Dynamic Displays is a case study in which a student can see how to better apply power and influence to navigate the workplace and a chosen career. Where did the power players of Dynamic Displays appropriately use and miss use power and information? The Problem No two people are alike; Davis expected his replacement to be as much like he was and use his style when Green took on the promotion. It appears as though Green does everything but the expectations that Davis envisions; however, it is not evident that Davis ever clearly laid out the expectations to the subordinate. Davis having held this position prior to Green’s promotion, had expert power from his experience, skills and knowledge (French & Raven, 1959). Power & Influence

...Power” by Jeffrey Pfeffer – Key Takeaways General Tips • Like it or not, self-promoters get rewarded • The best way to acquire power is to construct a positive image and reputation, in part by co-opting others to present you as successful and effective. • Learn from all situations and all people, even those I don’t like or respect. • Pay particular attention to the people holding positions I aspire to. • If someone is seen to prosper, there is a social psychological tendency for observers to decide that the lucky person must have done something to deserve his good fortune. He or she becomes a better person simply by virtue of the observed rewards. • Conversely, if something bad happens to someone, the belief in a just world causes the conclusion that the victim must have been a bad person. • Success, however achieved, will promote efforts to find the many positive virtues in those who are successful – thereby justifying their success. • Paying attention to what departments are represented in powerful positions provides an important clue as to where the power lies. Obstacles o Belief that the world is a just place.  People want the world to be controllable and predictable, thus they want to believe the world is just, and thus if you behave by the rules you will be all right, or if you fail to follow the rules bad things will happen.  Hand-me-down management formulas that reinforce this false belief. o Yourself.  Don’t self-handicap. Difference and Diversity Assignment

...Difference and Diversity Assessment Criteria 1.1 - Using examples, evaluate the relevance of the following in the counselling process:- stereotyping, language issues, different belief systems, family structures, family life experiences. All of the above issues will have an impact on the counselling process. Both the client and counsellor are individuals and bring with them often vastly different experiences, backgrounds and values. It is interesting to look at these factors and examine how they may influence the counselling process and the relevance they have. I come from a middle class background, am white, middle-aged, heterosexual, british etc - I would imagine, although I see myself as totally normal/average, many people I will counsel will have very different backgrounds etc. And whilst I am aware of this and hopefully therefore can reduce its affect, my clients will see all this and judge me accordingly, which will effect our relationship. Stereotyping - we recently did an exercise, in class, where we were asked to look at photos of individuals and make judgements on them and make up stories about them, without being politically correct. It was very revealing as firstly it emphasised how different everyones snap judgements and stereotyping are and then if they are so different, how completely wrong they can be. Stereotyping is a very normal and natural thing to do, but can be damagingly wrong. We use stereotyping to make judgments to keep us safe, its not necessarily...

Its performance in the field of “new” international agenda items (direct human, environment, etc.) lags behind its economic might. China will continue to be the manufacturing plant of the industrial world for many years. Investment in China will be driven primarily by the creation of local infrastructure focused on trade for export markets, whilst Chinese capital markets will still remain inchoate for many years. India wants to be powerful and hence enjoy global prestige. Its competitive edge resides in low labor costs (wages) in certain sectors (textiles, outsourcing, information technology). It has no coherent project of prosperity. Investment will continue to flow from companies wishing to reduce their labor and other production costs by “offshoring” their plant, call-center or web-center operations. I have selected three separate texts that illustrate the connection human aspirations and knowledge has in common and the impact hierarchy rankings have on one’s insight. The literary analysis essay interprets and defines the term “knowledge”. The meaning focuses around learning, instruction, insight, philosophy, and proficiency. The texts that will be used throughout the essay as sources are: Beowulf translated by Michael Swanton, The Wife of Bath’s Tale and the author is Geoffrey Chaucer, and The Tempest which is a product of William Shakespeare. Characters from the chosen texts demonstrate their perception of knowledge and wisdom based on the significance of superficial existence. People’s assumed power and privilege promote certain actions they could partake in when trying to fulfill personal desires. Acts of knowledge can be either appropriate or inappropriate gestures. It is difficult to distinguish right from wrong deeds the overall circumstances has to be examined and the answer lies in the outcome of the decision when wisdom was applied. A Brawl in Mickey's Backyard

...Brittni Menard A Brawl in Mickey's Backyard 9/9/2013 In Anaheim, California protestors gathered to put on a skit. They showed their support for a developer's plan to build affordable housing near the theme-park, which Disney opposed. Statistics show that housing was very high priced around the theme-park, and with the minimal wages the employees were making, they were unlikely to even be able to afford a one-bedroom apartment. This meant long commutes by bus or car for them. A developer called SunCal had arranged to buy 26-acres of land in the resort district, which needed approval by the city council. While the employees and other individuals and groups supported the idea, Disney wanted the land to be used only for tourism purposes. 1. The focal organization in this case is SunCal. A focal organization is the organization from whose perspective the analysis is conducted. The main issue SunCal faces is having to go through the council in order to get their intended proposition approved. 2. The relevant market stakeholders are employees & customers. The relevant nonmarket stakeholders are communities, the general public, & business support groups. 3. The employees are in favor of SunCal's proposed development and are interested in the lower rent/affordable housing options it would provide them. The It Futur Trends and Technology

...wireless sensors are becoming an active topic of research. Advances in hardware technology and engineering design have led to dramatic reductions in size, power consumption and cost for digital circuitry, wireless communications and Micro ElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS). This has enabled very compact, autonomous and mobile nodes, each containing one or more sensors, computation and communication capabilities, and a power supply. The missing ingredient is the networking and applications layers needed to harness this revolutionary capability into a complete system. We review the key elements of the emergent technology of “Smart Dust” and outline the research challenges they present to the mobile networking and systems community, which must provide coherent connectivity to large numbers of mobile network nodes co-located within a small volume. “Smart Dust.” It is certainly within the realm of possibility that future prototypes of Smart Dust could be small enough to remain suspended in air, buoyed by air currents, sensing and communicating for hours or days on end. At least one popular science fiction book has articulated just such a vision [12]. In this paper, we are concerned with the networking and applications challenges presented by this radical new technology. These kinds of networking nodes must consume extremely low power, communicate at bit rates measured in kilobits per second, and potentially need to operate in high volumetric densities. These requirements dictate the need...

...There are five bases of power that are divided into two separate group. The two groups are formal power and personal power. Formal power are powers that are based on one’s position in an organization. These powers include coercive, reward, and legitimate. Personal power is power that is driven by a persons individuals characteristics. The personal powers include expert power and referent power. Along with the five bases of power there is a behavior known as dependency. Dependency can be described as Person A having a relationship with Person B although Person B has something that Person A requires. Coercive power in an organization is having the ability to instill fear into someone of a lower rankings position because you can bring disciplinary actions on them. Most people in a workplace fear being fired or demoted from their position. Although negative results for Employee 1 aren’t expressed, the thought of not achieving the goal of earning a yearly bonus can impact behavior. Employee 1 knows without a great evaluation from the manager the yearly bonus will not be offered. Since the manager promotes employees to work additional hours the employee is going to do everything in his power to seem like the likely candidate for the bonus. The People

...The Five Forces Framework and Competitive Strategy In this framework due to Michael Porter there are two high-level stages in the creation of competitive strategy, each stage corresponding to a high-level determinant of profitability mentioned in the previous section. The first stage is the assessment of the attractiveness of the industry in which a given company is embedded based on a structural analysis of the industry. In this stage, called the five forces framework, five forces that influence industry attractiveness are identified, as well as the factors (e.g., number of competitors, size of competitors, capital requirements) that determine the intensity of each force and therefore the cumulative intensity of the five forces. The purpose of the five forces framework is to relate the degree (or intensity) of competition in a given industry, as qualitatively measured by the combined strength (or intensity) of five forces, to the attractiveness of the industry, defined as its ability to sustain profitability. Based on the structural analysis, a particular company may be in a very attractive industry (e.g., pharmaceuticals) or in an unattractive industry (e.g., steel). However, though a firm exists in an unattractive industry, it can still be highly profitable by choosing the proper competitive position within the industry, for example, e.g., a mini-mill such as Nucor in the steel industry in the nineteen-eighties. The second stage of strategy creation addresses the competitive...
