In the selection, Nick Carraway, the main character of “The Great Gatsby”, progresses from awkward to over accommodating to assertive.
At the start of the novel, Nick begins showing awkwardness. For example, when Nick visits Daisy for the first time and meets Jordan Baker. NIck “was almost surprised into murmuring an apology.” This instance show that Nick does not know exactly what to do in this type of social situation thus bringing out his awkwardness. Meeting someone as intimidating Jordan makes Nick bumbly because he wants to prove himself, but it just comes off as awkward. Also, at the apartment in New york on 158th street, where Tom and Myrtle would go to get away from George and Daisy, Nick asks questions about Tom’s affair like why Tom and Myrtle have not left their significant other while watching the the other guests party. First, Nick goes to lunch with Gatsby in late July and meets Mr. Wolfshiem, where he tries to make pleasant conversation with Wolfshiem, but when Wolfshiem leaves abruptly, Nick wonders if he “had said anything to offend him.” Nick tries to fit in by making everyone comfortable and he does his best to be friendly with Wolfshiem and worries whether Wolfshiem likes him or not. Then, Nick agrees to help Gatsby reunite with Daisy after meeting with Jordan, who suggests Nick should “invite Daisy over for tea” and let Gatsby come over when she comes. Nick tries to make his house up to Gatsby’s standards by letting Gatsby send someone over to trim his lawn, cleaning up, and using his cook to make lemon cakes. Nick tries to show he has the makings of a good friend so Gatsby will accept Nick because Nick wants to fit in with the higher class and and sees Gatsby as the best way to achieve that because of all of Gatsby’s money and
