ACCOUNTING SYSTEM ANALYSIS & DESIGN

ANSWER FOR TUTORIAL 3

There are several methods that systems analysts use to determine requirements for a proposed system. The requirements gathering techniques can be categorized into traditional, modern, or radical. The traditional requirements gathering techniques are interviews, questionnaires, , and documents analysis. The modern requirements determination techniques include Joint Application Design (JAD), group support systems, prototyping, and CASE tools. Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is a radical method for determining system requirements. Each of these approaches has advantages and disadvantages to system implementation and operation. 1. Briefly describe systems analysis and the major activities that occur during this phase of the systems development life cycle.
(4 Marks) Answer: Systems analysis involves determining how the current information system functions and assess what users would like to see in a new system. Requirements determination, requirements structuring, and alternative generation and selection are the three primary systems analysis activities. 2. Describe THREE (3) traditional techniques for collecting information during analysis. When might one be better than another?
(6 Marks) Answer: Traditional techniques for collecting requirements include interviewing individuals, interviewing groups, observing users, and document and procedure analysis.

(a) Interview: Interviewing involves speaking with users individually or as a group to discover their views about the current and target systems; it also involves carefully preparing an interview outline and guide before conducting the interview. Interviews are best done when only a few people are involved, when you use open-ended questions or the questions vary from

The people that work with the accounting information systems are specially trained accountants that way we can be ensure of the accuracy in the company’s financial transactions and also able to keep financial data. With the planning and investigation phase are made up of a team to investigate the current system that is installed and they have to make recommendation to the steering committee. The team’s main goal is to find ways for the user’s request of change and also to improve the existing system. ...ACC564 – Accounting Information Systems Professor: Dr. Monica Hubler September 8, 2014 Abstract Migrating to a new accounting information system is not an easy task. Many firms have struggled with this process, even though our textbook makes the process seem quite straightforward. Recently, IBM recapped some of the lessons learned in migrating to a new accounting information system within the federal government. These lessons can be applied to any accounting information system project. Others have developed their own recommendations for best practices and lessons learned involving implementing accounting information systems. However, in order to appreciate what IBM and others are proposing, we need to apply lessons learned to a real-life situation involving the failure to implement an accounting system properly. In Apollon Smyrnis (A Football Company) & Changing the AIS, I will research information related to a real-life accounting information system failure and best practices, as well as lessons learned from implementing the accounting system. In addition to information that I may find during my research, I will also use the following IBM article to complete the assignment: (http://www.businessofgovernment.org/article/what-we-know-now-lessons-learned-implementing-federal-financial-systems-projects). Moreover, in Apollon Smyrnis (A Football Company) & Changing the AIS, I will analyze the accounting information system. The accounting information system, in my...

Accounting Information Systems

...Chapter 1 ACCOUNTING INFORMATION SYSTEMS: AN OVERVIEW TEACHING TIPS This chapter provides general coverage of many of the text's major themes. It's usually a good idea to indicate how the topics covered in this chapter will be covered in more detail later in the course. Many instructors will not assign any problem from the end of this chapter. This can be done without any loss of overall continuity in the course. If the course will emphasize internal controls, it might be desirable to cover in class one of the general cases on internal control from the back of Chapters 4, 7, or 8. This should be done to stimulate student interest, but the instructor should not worry if the students in the course fail to analyze the case correctly. In some ways, teaching systems can be more difficult than teaching other areas. In many cases there are no clear-cut debits and credits to be made, and judgment is often required. This can make some students feel uncomfortable. So it's usually good to emphasize this at the beginning of the course to properly set students' expectations. The point should also be made that systems are an important area of professional examinations. One of the biggest risks in teaching systems is that it can easily become dry and boring. I have found that the best way to overcome this is to generate as much class discussion as possible on many of the major points in the chapter. Accordingly, I always make class participation about one-fourth of the total...

History of Ais

...History Initially, accounting information systems were predominantly developed “in-house” as legacy systems. Such solutions were difficult to develop and expensive to maintain. Today, accounting information systems are more commonly sold as prebuilt software packages from vendors such as Microsoft, Sage Group, SAP and Oracle where it is configured and customized to match the organization’s business processes. As the need for connectivity and consolidation between other business systems increased, accounting information systems were merged with larger, more centralized systems known as enterprise resource planning (ERP). Before, with separate applications to manage different business functions, organizations had to develop complex interfaces for the systems to communicate with each other. In ERP, a system such as accounting information system is built as a module integrated into a suite of applications that can include manufacturing, supply chain, human resources. These modules are integrated together and are able to access the same data and execute complex business processes. With the ubiquity of ERP for businesses, the term “accounting information system” has become much less about pure accounting (financial or managerial) and more about tracking processes across all domains of business. [edit]Software architecture of a modern AIS A modern AIS typically follows a multitier architecture separating the presentation to the user, application processing and data management...
