COSO Integrated Framework: Internal Environment Part 2

Assignment 1. Download or open the COSO ERM Integrated Framework from Course Handouts in Blackboard. 2. Review chapter 2 “Internal Environment” pages 27-34. 3. Read the following information about Go-Go Corporation. 4. Determine how each of the issues relates to the eight factors of the internal environment. * Factors of internal environment include risk management philosophy, risk appetite, board of directors, etc.
Some issues relate to only one factor, some relate to more than one factor. If you believe more than one factor of internal environment applies to a specific issue, then also identify which factor is the most relevant choice.
You should begin (or continue) to connect and relate topics covered previously to the current topics under discussion. For example, although this assignment primarily relates to COSO Internal Environment, you should also consider the issues in relation to what you know about SOX, fraud and business processes. f. Formal performance evaluations are counterproductive. Therefore, employees are evaluated on an informal, subjective basis.
This issue reflects a problem with the Commitment to Competence factor of the internal environment. COSO suggest that evaluation should be strict and objective. Company should have a standard measure to evaluate performance. g. Go-Go has reported increases in EPS for each of the past six years. However, earnings during the current year have leveled off and may decline.
This issue reflects a problem with Implication factor of the internal environment. Overstate might increase the risk of company’s business. The impact of an ineffective internal environment can be far-reaching, possibly resulting in financial loss, a tarnished public image, or a business failure. Company should ensure those

...towards accounting as a difficult subject. Differences in responses of the two student groups occurred for only three of the listed obstacles, none of which were considered significant by either group. There was no correlation between the GPAs of the respondents and their views on the 26 obstacles. A comparison of the findings of this study and those of previous research is also discussed. All students in the College of Industrial Management (CIM) at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia are required to take two courses in Principles of Accounting. The courses are designated as Acct 201 and Acct 202 and they are taught during the somophere year in fully coordinated sections. Activity-Based Costing

...ACTIVITY-BASED COSTING 2 The use of Activity-Based Costing (ABC) in the manufacturing of automobiles can have a great benefit for tracking costs that are actually used in the process of manufacturing a certain type of auto. ABC has an impact in job costing when the process is complex and there are many machines or processes used in manufacturing (Activity Based Costing, n.d.). Using the instance of automobile manufacturing, some signs of ABC being a beneficial method can include the ability for management to effectively use cost analysis in their decision-making on a certain model of automobile. By having the ability to track costs directly to the line of auto management can compare the manufacturing costs to the autos’ profit margins and determine if the line of auto is a money maker for the company, and if the product should continue to be offered in the manner in which it is currently manufactured at the price point it is offered to the consumer. Another sign of appropriately using ABC is the ability of the company to review and focus on methods for cost reduction of the auto. ABC allows the manufacturer to precisely pinpoint cost of materials, machines, and processes used to manufacture the auto. In doing so, this can give management guidance to where costs could be reduced in order to gain maximum profit from a product line. Managers should have a concern when it comes to broad averaging of costs. Broad...

...Market Beta (β) and Stock Returns - An Analysis of Select Companies I INTRODUCTION During the past three decades, CAPM (Capital Asset Pricing Model) has been studied in great depth and is used as the standard risk-return model by various researchers and academicians. The basic premise of CAPM is that the stocks with a higher beta yield higher returns for the investors. One of the conditions stipulated in the model is that the said return should be higher than the return of the risk-free asset. But, if the market return falls short of the riskless rate, then stocks with higher betas yield lower returns for the investors. Pettengill, Sundaram, Mathur (1995) call this the conditional (ex-post) relations between beta and return. Their research output concludes that there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between beta and returns. The present paper is a similar attempt based on the work of Pettengill/Sundaram/Mathur (1995). The objective of this research initiative is threefold. First, we compute ‘beta’ (β) for each security with a view to examine the ‘systematic risk’ present in the market with the help of selected sample companies. Secondly, we classify the companies based on the beta coefficient as ‘high-risk’ and ‘low-risk’ based on both daily and monthly returns basis. Finally, we examine whether the risk category of companies undergoes significant changes between monthly and daily returns basis or not. Financial economists have applied...

...Running Head: Online Game Addiction Perception of and Addiction to Online Games as a Function of Personality Traits Searle Huh University of Southern California and Nicholas David Bowman Michigan State University Online Publication Date: April 26, 2008 Journal of Media Psychology, V 13, No. 2, Spring, 2008 Abstract With the growing popularity of online video games, there have been anecdotal reports suggesting that these games are highly addictive, with some gamers spending in excess of 40 to 50 hours per week playing. Thus, research into the individual characteristics that lead to excessive play is warranted. This paper examines two individual variables – personality and perceptions of media – and explores how they relate to online game play, specifically online game addiction. By presenting a revised metric for online game addiction, this paper explores the relationship between addiction and both personality and perception. Online addiction is presented in this paper as a process addiction with four unique factors: perceived social sanctions, excessive play, uncontrollable play, and displacement. Both personality and perception are found to be significantly associated with online game addiction. These results are interpreted and discussed, and future research direction is suggested. Keywords: online game addiction, Big Five personality traits, media perception, MMOs Perception and Addiction of Online Games as a Function of Personality Traits ...

...I. INTRODUCTION: TYPES OF NEGOTIABLE INSTRUMENTS Money: UCC defines money to mean a “medium of exchange currently authorized or adopted by a domestic or foreign government” 1-201(24). * * The Functions of Money (1) Medium of Exchange Cures two problems with bartering: Double coincidence of wants, e.g. you have a horse you want to trade, and you want a cow—now you need someone who has a cow, and wants a horse. Depreciable commodities (2) Store of Value Money may be used as a store of value. Not all stores of value are money. (3) Unit of Account Unit in which prices are stated and accounts maintained. (4) Statement of Deferred Payment Measure of what must be paid in long-term transactions like loans and annuities. What is Payment Systems? Concerned with the law governing the payment component of commercial transactions. This is the law applicable not to money itself, but to the various substitutes for money. Payments law is not derived from principles of “higher law.” Instead, it is instrumental—designed to facilitate commercial transactions. One way to view payment law is as creating a set of default rules. These rules are designed to establish what the parties would otherwise do for themselves, if they were able to bargain about what the rules would be. Presumably, people would like to reduce transaction costs. So how do we determine what the parties would have chosen? We engage in a “thought experiment” and imagine what kind of bargain parties...
