The achievement gap is a very crucial issue for students all or the world today. Wagner (n.d.) focuses on two forms of the achievement gap, the first being the gap between the quality of schooling that most middle- class kids get in America and quality of schooling available for most poor and minority children. The second gap being the global achievement gap, the gap between our teaching and public schools in the United States versus all students from countries all over the world as a part of our global knowledge economy.
McKinsey (2009) gives more details and statistics based on the number of differences in the achievement of white black and Latino students. McKinsey discusses the four different distinct achievement gaps between the United States and other nations; between black and Latino; students and white students; between students of different income levels; and between similar students schooled in different systems or regions (McKinsey 2009). McKinsey (2009) also discusses the gap between black, Latino and white students also known as the racial achievement gap. On average, black and Latino students are roughly two to three years of learning behind white students of the same age. A study showed alarming results that when comparing reading and math scores at the 8th grade level, 48 percent blacks, 43 percent Latino and 17 percent white were “below basic”(McKinsey 2009.
Similarly, Wagner (n.d.) and McKinsey both emphasize the global achievement gap and the income achievement gap. Horrifying statistics show that impoverished students are two years behind the average middle class student at the same grade level, which seen in children in the Philadelphia public school system. The income achievement gap shows that middle class students have better access to education, as Wagner stresses that you have to understand what is going on between the old world of teaching and new world of teaching to truly understand the achievement gap. A student, Owen, explained that his teacher asked if he used the times table in the back of his copybook for his math quiz because they were not supposed to. He told his teacher he did use the chart and she did not care or take points off, he said she was just happy I passed. Although public schools are free, students do not receive the same excellent access to education. In the elementary schools around Temple’s neighborhood where Owen goes, the kids do not get the same access because they are considered more low income than say a middle school in Delaware County, which is not right. “Important performance gaps exist at every level in American education: among states, among districts within states, among schools within districts, and among classrooms within schools” (McKinsey 2009). This includes the difference in public school systems throughout the United States, for example public schools in Boston are much better performing than the public schools in Philadelphia. In contrast with McKinsey (2009), Wagner (n.d.) focuses more on 21st century skills that need to be addressed in the business world. From his research and questioning of professionals he has come to the conclusion that critical thinking skills are crucial to surviving in the workforce, and to put less emphasis on test taking. Students after the implementation of no child left behind are focused on getting the right answer but don’t have any critical thinking skills, they do not know how to think deeper and determine the cause or reasoning behind a problem, which is a skill that almost all employers want their employees to have. In addition to critical thinking he emphasized collaboration and entrepreneurialism. As a business student, I have multiple group projects in every single one of my upper level business classes, because my teachers are trying to prepare me for when I enter the job market and have to continually collaborate on a team. Innovation and creative thinking goes hand in hand with critical thinking, because if you can figure the background and cause of a problem, you will then have the ability to see where the current model can be changed or improved with the ever-growing trends.
The Jacobs and Hawley (n.d.) article discusses the importance of workforce and how it is crucial aspect of workers today. They define workforce development as the coordination of public and private sector policies and programs that provides individuals with the opportunity for a sustainable livelihood and helps organizations achieve exemplary goals, consistent with societal text” (Jacobs & Hawley n.d.). The purpose of workforce development is providing necessary teaching and skills for the current workforce to be successful and achieve their goals. They explain that development of workforce is based of trends: technology, globalization, the new economy, political change, and demographic shifts. The two most significant trends I will focus on are globalization and technology. Globalization is a huge trends within society today, we discuss the importance ad this existence of globalization within our schools and workforce. Jacobs and Hawley (n.d.) presses the need to use adult education, workforce development, to solve problems of globalization. Technology is disruption our current workforce. Technology provides so many opportunities to develop and improve company’s development. Training on new and developing technology increase the productivity of workers and the firm as a whole, because they’re are able to communicate with people from all over the world from anywhere, which hugely impacts overall productivity. Jacobs and Hawley (n.d.) explain that workforce development is scoped around 4 areas of thought, how schools and agencies prepare individuals to re-enter the workforce 2.) How organizations provide opportunities to improve workplace performance 3.) How organizations respond to changes that affect workforce development 4) How individuals undergo life transitions related to workforce participation (Jacobs & Hawley n.d.). Essentially workforce development should continue to provide policies, programs, and activities should be considered from a more articulated perspective. Workforce development is changing globally and it is no longer just a political policy, we need to be aware and prepare our employees for continuous training based on the ever-changing needs and trends in business and political atmosphere. In conclusion there are many different forms of achievement gap, whether it be racial, income related, or global, they all exist. Wagner (n.d.), Jacobs & Hawley (n.d.), and McKinsey (2009) all provide relevant takes research on the achievement gap. Leadership, technology, communication, and critical thinking are all skills that our school systems should be teaching students, so that they are prepared to enter the 21st century workforce. Teaching for the state exams is not successful at preparing students for the work in the real world. Companies are looking for attributes in candidates and we need to stop teaching the standardize test and make attempts to close the achievement gap forever.

Most educators define the achievement gap as the difference in performance between low-income and minority students compared to that of their peers. Traditionally African-American students lag behind their white peers.
