Strategies for English Learners

...Learning strategies are used by students to help them understand information and solve problems. A learning strategy is a person's approach to learning and using information. Students who do not know or use good learning strategies often learn passively and ultimately fail in school. Learning strategy instruction focuses on making the students more active learners by teaching them how to learn and how to use what they have learned to solve problems and be successful. One strand addresses how students acquire information. It includes strategies for learning how to paraphrase critical information, picture information to promote understanding and remembering, ask questions and make predictions about text information, and identify unknown words in text. A second strand helps students study information once they acquire it. It includes strategies for developing mnemonics and other devices to aid memorization of facts as well as strategies for learning new vocabulary. These strategies help prepare students for tests. A third strand helps students express themselves. It includes strategies to help students write sentences and paragraphs, monitor their work for errors, and confidently approach and take tests. No single strategy is a panacea. For example, we have reading strategies that help students figure out what a word is, comprehend what they're reading, acquire vocabulary, and understand the structure of text. All of these strategies are essential for a well-integrated, balanced...

...childhood ages six through ten. In these two groups, you will see several characteristics or developments from physical, emotional, cognitive, intellectual, language, social, reading, writing, and interpersonal. I will begin with the physical development of both groups. This is where you will notice their motor skills. There are two different motor skills, gross and fine. Gross motor skills involve the larger muscles including the arms and legs. Actions requiring gross motor skills include walking, running, balance, and coordination. When evaluating gross motor skills, the factors that experts look at include strength, muscle tone, movement quality, and the range of movement and the other is fine more skills, which involve the smaller muscles in the fingers, toes, eyes and other areas. The actions that require fine motor skills tend to be more intricate, such as drawing, writing, grasping objects, throwing, and catching (Cherry, 2011). Early Childhood ages 2-6 Physical Development By the time, they reach two years old their fine and gross motor skills are developing even more. Aed/202 Reading and Writing Stragies

...AED/202 Reading and Writing Development Sandy Mackey June 28, 2013 Kristen Weiss Reading and Writing Development As a future educator I believe that reading and writing is the utmost import thing in a child’s education. Without these two skills a child will not be able to succeed in school. For my essay, I chose two age groups that I want to teach; middle childhood, ages six through ten, and early adolescence, ages ten through 14. The reason I chose these two developmental ages is because I believe that children enjoy learning; they are like sponges, always trying to absorb as much as possible. The reading development in middle childhood children and early adolescent childhood children seem somewhat different. Middle childhood children start by identifying letters and matching letters with individual sounds, knowing what a word is, and interpreting spaces and punctuation are the earliest building blocks for reading skills (www.education.com). Early adolescent childhood children, usually do not have an issue with reading; they can identify vocabulary words in a book and sound out the words. Children of this stage usually enjoy reading. Writing skills for both middle and early adolescent children develop in the same way as their reading skills. Middle childhood children are more focused on what they are writing, their spelling, spacing, punctuation, and coherence has improved (www.education.com). As for the early adolescent children...

Introduction to Sociology Writing Assignment

...As technology becomes more advanced, the intellect of people decreases. In today’s ever changing environment, technology is becoming more prevalent as the expected knowledge or common knowledge in all aspects of society. Some of the most noticeable aspects of society affected by technology are: schools (at all age levels), social life (both online and in person), and businesses (concerning the use of technology for normal operation). In theory, the groups of people most affected by the changing technological environment are children and young teens. According to Gerhard Lenski, the younger generation is affected more because the standard of technology they are exposed to is more than older generations were exposed to in the past (Macionis, J. J.,2010). According to Gerhard Lenski’s theory of society and technology, “Inventing or adopting new technology sends ripples of change throughout a society (Macionis, J. J., 2010). Based on Lenski’s theory, the grandparents of a family would have difficulty adapting to the new technology used today, while the grandchildren would have some difficulties living the way the Grandparents did when they were young. The older generation had to complete all of their work without autocorrect, calculators, or computers to automatically calculate equations. So, with the use of more technology now than in the past, some believe that as technology becomes more advanced, the intellect of people decrease(s). The first example of the decrease in intellect...
