Advantage and disadvantage of entrance exams to universities in China and US

As we all know, students who want to go to college must take exams which are called “entrance exams to Universities”. College entrance exams are considered to be the unique approach that the students are admitted by the colleges, and a significant factor that determines a student’s future development. They’re even regarded as one of the turning points in their lives. The similarity of the college entrance exams in China and that in the Western countries is that they are both the ways of selecting students for the colleges.

Well, it's a must door for all the Chinese senior students to the higher education. It may be considered to be too exam-oriented, or too narrow and strict to the students, however it has last for decades. It is actually useful in choosing talented people. To take an even spectacular example, in order to get a good result, students must be hard working, considerable, insistent and knowledgeable, and these, are just what the society needs. In total, everything exists has a reason. I think the exam is workable in some way, but can still be improved.

In China, more than half students take exams on June 17th and 18th, in China. In that day, many students march in the classroom to wait for the examinations. Whatever the weather is hot, they full of confidence and stress to write down their answers. Even though they are ill and cannot give up the test, for they cannot live up to their parents. Because Chinese people have the traditionally put a lot of emphasis on education and families will make the big sacrifices to make sure their children get the best education and the best chance in life. So, regardless of being the parents or the children looks the college entrance examination is very heavy. Of course, the examination is also very important to Americans’ students. Although the college entrance examination has the advantages and disadvantage. Now I will statement my opinion.

First of all, the examination can determined our real ability and manifest fairly. No pains, no gains, the maxim will be shown before our eyes. Many of them have paid difficulty and diligent to reach their hope and expectations. But it sometimes still has not changes the position. Because many students in order to reach their aim, they cheat in college entrance examination. The university entrance exam cheating is still occur from time to time, serious disruption of the examination order, and destroyed the entrance of the fair and equitable. Recently, the Ministry of Education issued a "unified national higher education entrance examination. Examination Work" (hereinafter referred to as "Regulations"), a clear test, marking and other details from the system for the college entrance examination again to add the "insurance valve”.

In addition, The College Entrance Examination has been around in China for nearly 20 years. It helps many people change their life, especially poor students, countryside students. As to these students, the college entrance examination has an important effect on them. Because they only change their fate improve their stander of life by examine, especially the college entrance examination.

However, in respect that the college entrance exams are dog-eat-dog, most students try their best to conquer the exams. But too much pressure is not favorable for the teenagers’ pullulating. The pressure of getting good grades in the exams has made the students study without thinking. They just learn the knowledge but carry it out. To get a bright future, students are forced by parents to study, let alone the curiosity and aspiration to knowledge. In a long term, it is harmful for the further study. So, most students and parents all regard that taking college entrance exams are the most crucial moment in a student’s life.

One of the most serious is that students in different districts have to face different policies when they go to college. Some big cities like Beijing and Shanghai have more colleges than other places, so students there may have more chances to go to a good college. They can go to the same college with a much lower mark. While students who are from some poor districts or countries are more difficult to go to there. They face many difficulties when they are in the high school and they have to face more troubles when going to colleges. It's unfair for the students who come from less developed places.

If China doesn't stop such things from happening, there will be more people who can't do their best to make a contribution. But in US the situation is better than China. ACT (American College Test) is equal the college entrance examination.

In China, the college entrance examination virtually can select talents from so many students, but not all the talented students can do well in the exam. Thus, it is to some degree not as equal as we expected. It needs efforts and also good luck. The examination gives students too much pressure and burden. Teachers always take exam-oriented educational form. In US, they can select talents from so many students. Because some students are directly selected without examines. And their examination named ACT; it combined the theory with the practical, moreover test nimble. So, the examination in US is more advantageous than disadvantageous. Thus china should reform the system of the college entrance examination and make it suits the modern society.

In conclusion, most students and parents all regard that taking college entrance exams are the most crucial moment in a student's life. In contrary, some people think it is important but vital and unchangeable. Different people have different opinion, coins have two sides. Every road leads to Rome, so with great efforts, anyone can success at any time. The failure in the college entrance exams is never the terminal of your life, and maybe it is just the beginning of changing the direction of your career.

The Craze of Overseas Study

...students from the Chinese mainland are 52 % more than in 2009. Mainland China has become the biggest source of overseas students in the world. Hundreds of thousands scholars and students have gone to foreign countries to further their studies. If there is a choice, more and more Chinese families are willing to send their children abroad. Many people are sparing no efforts in applying for going abroad. The trend of students' age also becomes lower than before. At the same time, the total number of students taking the national college entrance Exam continued to fall. This phenomenon is partly because people are unsatisfied with the college entrance exam system. Twenty or thirty years ago, most Chinese students who came to study in the U.S. - if not all – are mostly academic elite, but now the source of students has expanded a lot. Actually, a part of those overseas students are the ones who failed in their middle school entrance exam or college entrance Examination. The most common place they went to is called diploma mill (also known as a degree mill) which is an organization that awards academic degrees and diplomas with substandard. Most people also think that studying abroad is the guarantee of good jobs. But a recent survey on 100 China's richest people who are born after 1980 shows that only 6 of them have the experience of overseas study. However, there are quite a lot of problems you have to face when you study abroad. Economic problems: Travel and living costs may be...

Maddie and Her Second Language

...Some kids may find it hard and confusing. There are many advantages and disadvantages for children who grow up learning a second language from a young age. If successful, learning a second language can lead to increased job opportunities when the children are older, or they can see it as a wasted of time if the child grew up learning the language, but never fully grasped it. This was the case with my little sister, Maddie, who’s older now but has been studying Spanish since she was in the first grade. She has faced many ups and downs when trying to learn this foreign language. This is her experience of studying Spanish as a second language. When Maddie started learning Spanish in the first grade it immediately affected how she performed in the rest of her subjects in school and in her other activities. The first disadvantage is that children may start to mix languages and get confused with the language structures. Children may start to use their native language and incorporate it into their second language. It seemed like for the longest Maddie had this problem, mixing up her languages especially when she talked. While she was speaking English, she would replace some of her English words with Spanish terms she already knew. She would even make her own words up if it sounded like Spanish to her. For example, she would say: ”Mi favorite color es azul” or “Today at schoolo I played with mi ninos.” This was a disadvantage because Maddie didn’t know if the word she was saying were...

Standardized Testing

...Abstract Standardized testing does not define ones intelligence or ability. There has always been a quarrel about the tests: students may be very intelligent but are really bad test takers. The No child left behind act was an educational preference forced upon educators that will help them gain an equal opportunity at academic success. The law would promote this through standardized tests. Standardized testing may help students gain wonderful academic success however there are also things that can hinder scholars as well. Standardized testing has its advantages and disadvantages. Over the years standardized testing has been a trending topic, some people are in favor for the test while others are not. How can one test determine an individual’s ability or intelligence when students are people with needs and concerns beyond standardized testing! What is standardized testing? Standardized tests are tests where students answer multiple choice questions where each question only has one correct answer and are usually designed from experience and not theory (How standardized testing damages education ). The tests are based on educational aspects such as reading, math, and science skills (depending upon the type of standardized test being provided). Standardized testing is a law required aspect that is supposed to help scholars academic success and schools expand (with the use of federal funding). Various types of popular standardized test in the United States include Scholastic...

Public Education vs Home Schooling

...Every year more and more parents are taking their children out of the public school system and enrolling them in home schooling programs. Parents question the current public school system and wonder if home schooling would be a better alternative for their children’s education. Considering that there are already more than four million children enrolled in these types of programs in the United States alone, it is not surprising that it has caused some heated debates during the past decade. Along with an average 15 to 20 % yearly growth rate, many professional educators are worried that because of this much needed funds will be kept from entering the public education system. During the year of 2007 the United States Department of Education conducted a study that showed home schooled student's test scores were much higher than others. Even the median scores for all grades were much larger than those students of public or private schools. For example, in grades one through four, average home schooled students were usually one grade higher than their peers in public school. By the equivalent of eighth grade, those home schooled students were usually considered four years ahead of those in public school. One reason for these results is that home schooled students often receive much more one-on-one attention than the average student in public or private school does. In home schooling programs the students receive much more attention than they do in a Public School because there...

...research finds that students who attended regular “comprehensive” (public) secondary schools did better in college than those who scored at the same level on standardized admissions exams and attended “independent” (private) or “grammar” (selective public) schools. Pointing to the study last week, Oxford University’s dean of undergraduate admissions, Mike Nicholson, created waves when he declared that students who do well at poor performing secondary schools “may have more potential” than those from more-advantaged schools, and that universities should consider the context in which students compile an academic record.  In the United States, universities have claimed for years that admissions officers consider socioeconomic obstacles a student has overcome, though evidence suggests that on average, at the most selective 146 institutions, they do not. The new study, published by the British National Foundation for Educational Research and the Sutton Trust, a private foundation, was five years in the making and examined 8,000 students.  It found that students from independent or grammar schools performed the same in college as comprehensive-school students who scored one or two grades lower on their entrance exams (known as A-levels).  For example, a comprehensive-school student who scored three B’s on these exams would, on average, perform the same in college as an independent- or grammar-school student who scored an A and two B’s, or two A’s and a B. Part of what makes the study striking...

Educational Equality

...The Writing Process 5/2/14 Standardized Testing These days, if a school's standardized test scores are high, people think the school's staff is effective. If a school's standardized test scores are low, they see the school's staff as ineffective. In either case, because educational quality is being measured by the wrong scale, those evaluations are apt to be in error. One of the main reasons that students' standardized test scores continue to be the most important factor in evaluating a school is deceptively simple. Most educators do not really understand why a standardized test provides a misleading estimate of a school staff's effectiveness, as well as education quality for students. Standardized test are not effective measurements of a student’s knowledge, they create negative impacts on curriculum, and they are racially, socially, and economically biased. A standardized test is any examination that's administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner. There are two major kinds of standardized tests: aptitude tests and achievement tests. “Standardized aptitude tests predict how well students are likely to perform in some subsequent educational setting (SAT-I /ACT), both of which attempt to forecast how well high school students will perform in college. But standardized achievement-test scores are what citizens and school board members rely on when they evaluate a school's effectiveness.” (Popham) One of the most important reasons that students’ performances...

Choosing the Best Education for Your Child

...living rooms about which is better: public schools or private schools, or even home schooling. According to a 2009 Great Schools and Harris Interactive poll, nearly one in four parents are currently considering switching their child's school either from private to public or public to private as a result of the economy. They ask themselves, will their child have a better chance of getting into a better university by attending the prestigious private school? In what environment would my child thrive? Where will my child’s faith be nurtured best? There are many schooling options available out there, but the three main choices that parents are debating about are public schools, private schools, and home schooling. Each system has advantages and disadvantages. Weighing the pros and cons of each system will help the parent make an informed decision about which arrangement is the most advantageous. Many public school schools are impressive; others are passable. Public schools seem to reflect the economic realities of their location. Wealthy suburban schools will have more amenities than inner city schools. Think San Jose, California versus Detroit, Michigan; Windermere versus Bithlo. Most children in the US attend a public school and this is one of the things that unite many Americans regardless of race, ethnic background, or religious beliefs. Many parents believe this is an important factor and that private schools tend to create an elite class. There is such diversity in public...
