I still couldn't push my mind past a planes ability to land and take off from the water. My pilot sure pushed the limits on my nerves. We shot off the water a couple of feet above the treeline. Deep into the clouds, we rose further into the unknown. The flashes and beeps of the old 1973 float plane. I must say it only took him a few pulls of the prop to get that engine rolling. It was so loud being in the front seat, I couldn't hear my music with the aggressive buzz of the blade running through my body. Sitting up front was the peak of my worries; being able to see the thunderstorms dumping rain on portions of undiscovered landscape, painted with the blue and green of trees and giant lakes. The trust he had in me boosted my confidence a little bit, but my fear was overwhelming my whole body. I moved the stiff sticks in my hands, the rudder on the back slightly move back and forth as I pulled. My realization of what was really going on didn’t hit me till he had came and sat back down. He said, “Nice job kid, thanks for not killing us.” My family also provided their sly comments and laughter.
Once we landed my cousin and I bolted up the rock path up towards the log cabin a couple hundred yards from the water. We unloaded all of our stuff and then got ready for lunch. They had to fly in all of our materials needed for the week long trip, which meant there was no one coming to get us, and we are not getting anymore food. This shook me up a bit but I settled down after we ate. Another weird thing we had to do was turn off the power in the house because we only had enough fuel to run the generator when we needed it, but not all night. It didn't get dark until midnight, so it made it hard to

The weight of these abstract items is as real as that of any physical ones, and unlike those physical objects, they are not so easily cast away. Throughout the story, O'Brien alternates between narrative passages and simple descriptions of the items that the soldiers are carrying. This fragmentation brings focus to the things the men are carrying, both tangible and intangible, without downplaying the narration. In the descriptive segments of the story, O'Brien is very exact in his descriptions and seems to be merely cataloging what is being carried: "As a first lieutenant and platoon leader, Jimmy Cross carried a compass, maps, code books, binoculars, and a .45(c)caliber pistol that weighed 2.9 pounds full loaded." O'Brien gives only straight forward descriptions in these segments and the writing is void of any feeling or sentiment. When describing the intangible things, however, the writing is a lot more in tune with the emotions of the characters: "Jimmy Cross humped his love for Martha up the hills and through the swamps...Lieutenant Cross remembered touching [her] left knee. A dark theater, he remembered,...when he touched her knee, she turned and looked at him in a sad, sober way that made him pull his hand back, but he would always remember."...
