Alcohol use in elderly
Alcohol is part of our culture- it helps us celebrate and socialize and it enhances our religious ceremonies. In one word is social drug and in other word is depressant drug. Depressant drug because it slows down the messages travelling between the brain and the body.
How does alcohol affect older adults? * When adults age 65 and older drink the same amount of alcohol as younger people, their blood alcohol levels are typically 30 to 40 per cent higher. The higher blood alcohol concentration results from an age-related decrease in the amount of body water in which to dilute the alcohol. Therefore, although they can metabolize and eliminate alcohol as efficiently as younger persons, the elderly are at increased risk for intoxication and adverse effects. * One reason for this is that older bodies tend to have less alcohol dehydrogenase available. This is the enzyme in the stomach that starts to break down alcohol before it reaches the bloodstream. * Women in general have less body water than men. * A higher blood alcohol level is associated with a higher risk of intoxication, cognitive difficulties and problems with balance and co-ordination. * Older adults’ sensitivity to alcohol may also be heightened by medical conditions such as diabetes, hypertension or dementia or by medications. There are 15 plus references specifically telling us that we should steer clear of all association of this drink. In proverbs 20:1 it says “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” and also in Ephesians 5:18 “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”. God only wants what is best for us and He knows that if we consume such a thing it will hurt our testimony and hinder our ability to serve Him in His perfect will. His acceptable will is open to you but if the door to God’s perfect will is still open, run through it! One of the 1st and main stories in the Bible about this is when lot’s daughters use alcohol to make their father drunk. When he is drunken and uncovered in his tent they commit a terrible sin against God and their father, but without this mind impairing substance it never would’ve been possible and a lot of the world’s problems we have today would not exist if this event of history did not happen. Another example in the Bible is when Xerxes made a worldly party for all of his friends and gave alcohol to everyone and it clouded his judgment and he made his wife to sin and led every man in that room to lust and sin after her,...
