The View from Castle Rock The book The View from Castle Rock is about the author Alice Munro, with her maiden name Alice Laidlaw who is learning about her heritage and her ancestors from her past. She speaks about all her greatest adventures and important events in her life of a child to young adult. In every chapter comes a new family member. The novel mainly consists of maturity and family ties. She went from a curious child to a wise young adult, she is very fond of learning about her ancestors, and she went through a tough time as a teenager of her time. And as a curious child people would imagine her wandering around and getting lost, but she was not like that. However one day after school Alice and her friend Mary were chatting. Her friend Mary convinced her to take a shortcut home. However, that was not the case. Although in the end she finds her way home and states “I thought that I would never, on my own, be able to find my way back to the mainland” (Munro 5). In the beginning when she got lost, she was a little worried, but she knew that being worried and sad is not the answer to find her way back. So she kept on a brave face and fortunately found her way home. This quotation shows that she does not need any aid to guide her through difficult obstacles in life such as this. She was becoming a mature young lady, destroying obstacles bravely. Likewise, Alice is determined to get what she wants. In the short story chapter called Hired Girl, Alice was pretty skeptical about women always doing chores and men just going to work and coming home to do nothing but relax. She was determined to prove her point that men can do house chores as well. So she went to work.
