For this article integration paper, my subculture is the Beta Zeta chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi. Leadership and the development of the skill is a main component of AOII as well as other National Panhellenic Conference sororities. In this paper, I will be using a source by Dan Bureau titled “Fraternities and Sororities Support Leadership Development! How do we Know?” Also, the article “An Analysis of Leadership Programming Sponsored by Member Organizations of the National Panhellenic Conference,” written by Genevieve Evans Taylor is the other source. Bureau’s main claim in his work is these (Greek) organizations support leadership development. Taylor’s main claim is that “Leadership development is a high priority for many National Panhellenic …show more content…
Therefore, not only does the organization provide a setting for leadership, but it also provides a learning experience for how a person leads and what works best for each individual. Taylor’s article is in agreement stating “one of the reasons sororities exist is to develop the individual's potential through leadership opportunities and group effort,” (Taylor). Therefore, it is up to the individual on whether or not they want to act upon this organization and step up as a leader. The foundation is set, but one has to build upon it to be truly successful in growth as a leader.
Regardless of all of Bureau’s arguments and points, he brings up the fact that there is a lack of evidence. Taylor’s article also states that there is a lack of evidence in finding the correlation between Greek organizations and the increase in leadership abilities. Even though this is not a major claim pertaining to leadership, it is still an important similarity between the two articles. The importance is because it highlights the insufficient ways to measure growth of leadership since there were not specific studies viewing the beginning of a member’s induction to the Greek organization to the …show more content…
Inside Taylor’s document, nine leadership components are identified. Amongst these identifications, Taylor states that the study found that “cultivating values was rated highest of the nine leadership components for emphasis, importance, and effectiveness,” (Taylor). Despite there being a high rating of effectiveness, the other eight components on Taylor’s chart were low and did show any improvement on increasing the skills described as being needed for a leader. Bureau also included the statement in his article, “20 of the 26 sororities note the term “leadership” on the main homepage of their Web sites, indicating its importance; and 16 of the 26 sororities note the term “leadership” within their creed, mission, vision, or purpose statement,” (Bureau).
