In the memoir Always Running, the author Luis Rodriguez hangs out with the wrong group of friends, commits violence, does drugs, and gets in trouble all the time. He is a very complicated character , he wants to do good things for his community but the people he hangs out with get into trouble and only care about their gang. Because of this, he is not a very sympathetic character. His parents want him to be like his brother a scholar and be successful, but he keeps making the wrong choices. At the same time, Luis also tries to do good things for his community.
In the book, Luis joins the gang and gets beaten. He also goes out to beat others as a part of the initiation. “Do it man”,he said. Simply that. On the other hand Luis was barely finding out about gangs with his friends. Luis meets Yuk Yuk and he introduces Luis into stealing they meet with a 30 year old man who orders them to steal cars bring them to the garage and strip them down this was the first time he actually stole something “big”. They would steal anything they would be ordered to bikes,jewelry, electronics and other things and in return got paid in cash. This shows that Luis isn't a very sympathetic character because earlier he also said that his mom wanted him to succeed and stay out of trouble she tried her best to keep up with their family but he is over here stealing and getting into trouble. Later on there is a thing called “the tradition” where him and his friends show up to a football game and hassle some white people for their money and taunt others. After this happened there was an incident with the police they were questioning the group. One of luis friends tells the cop “ Why Are Mexicans always being harassed”, he gets put in a choke hold and is left unconscious. This shows the outcome of Luis actions he would've rather seen his friend die than succeed with them this could've had a worse outcome since the police didn't care at the
