Being a displaced New Yorker I have dined at many five star restaurants. Since moving to Western Maryland to say a good restaurant or diner is few and far between would be an understatement. I recently had breakfast at Denny’s, a family diner set in the 1950s timeline. Over the next couple of paragraphs I will evaluate my overall dining experience at this restaurant and go over the service, food and, expense of this particular Denny’s. As with any decent restaurant a hostess is waiting for you at the door so as to seat you upon entering. As my girlfriend and, I were escorted to are seats we could not help but notice the fine art of 1950s style car paintings and, little snippets of memorabilia. As we were seated a smiling face asked if we would like drinks. My girlfriend wanted sweet tea and, I requested a Coca-Cola. The waitress was off to get are drinks and returned without delay in less than two munities. It was at this time she asked if we were ready to order. We both declined as were not ready. That was only the first of four times that I counted before we were ready and, we had only been their seven minutes before we ordered. I felt like I was being rushed out. Then while eating she asked us no less than ten times if everything was ok. I understand that a server should ask the guest how everything is or if the guest needs something but, it felt like this girl was pestering us. It was almost as bad as the food. After a normal twenty mutinies of wait time we were served our food. My girlfriend ordered the super bird a turkey and Swiss sandwich on grilled sour dough bread with French fries and, a side order of mozzarella sticks. In America’s restaurants, the custom is giving a 15% tip (To Insure Promptitude) to the servers. Every year 42 billion dollars of tips were granted to American servers, whose income greatly depends on tips. Recently a manager of a famed California restaurant, Jay Porter, decided to prohibit tipping. The price then included the tip, which is 18%, 15% of which belonged to the servers and the rest went to the kitchen staff. Research reveals that 80% of American diners favor tipping as they think tips incentivize servers to do good service and they feel guilty being served. From 10% in the early 20th century, the tipping rate has increased to18.9% today. While most of Mr. Porter’s customers accept the new policy, very few diners were still obliged to tip and that money went to the charity. Children were valuable laborers and because of the poverty in London slums were enticed with candy onto the vessles. They would even grab elderly people, drunk people sleeping in a gutter and shipped them off to the Americas for labor. The ocean journey to America usually took eight to twelve weeks. It was a difficult trip.
