In Edmond Rostand’s play Cyrano De Bergerac, the charismatic swordsman-poet named Cyrano helps a fellow cadet, Christian, woo the woman he loves. Embarrassed by his large nose, Cyrano romances his cousin, Roxane, by proxy. Cyrano provides words and soul to the relationship, while Christian provides the looks. Cyrano and Christian showcase each other’s characteristics by foiling each other. Cyrano is inwardly beautiful and outwardly ugly, while Christian is outwardly beautiful and somewhat dull. Cyrano possesses many attractive qualities that are apparent on the inside while Christian’s outward beauty is not matched by inner richness of character.
