Since then the company has expanded its business and bought Grattan (a British mail-order company) in 1986, retail chain Combined English Stores Group and the Dillons-Preedy chain of newsstands. In 1987 Next launched Childrenswear.. and it became one of the leading retail companies in the United Kingdom. Nowadays Next owns a significant number of retail shops in the UK and many franchise stores overseas (Nexis® UK 2009). Introduction Among the countries currently experiencing sovereign debt crises, Ireland’s case is perhaps the most dramatic. As recently as 2007, Ireland was seen by many as top of the European class in its economic achievements. Ireland had combined a long period of high economic growth and low unemployment with budget surpluses. The country appeared to be well placed to cope with any economic slowdown as it had a gross debtGDP ratio in 2007 of 25% and a sovereign wealth fund worth about €5000 a head. Fast forward four years and Ireland is shut out of sovereign debt markets and in an EUIMF adjustment programme. Its debt-GDP ratio has soared over 100% and the sovereign wealth fund is effectively gone. In this short paper, I provide a brief review of how this rapid change came about and discuss potential future developments in relation to Ireland’s sovereign debt situation. 2. The Rise and Fall of the Celtic Tiger It is now well known that Ireland’s famed “Celtic Tiger” ended...

At the end of the day the yes bin was full. They gave up their jobs the following day and Innocent Drinks was formed (innocent, our story) The creation of this company was difficult for the three friends who had no money, they asked their friends for rich contacts and were introduced to Maurice Pinto, a wealthy American who lent them £250,000 after seeing the potential of their plan. ...and that any human action is the result of the consequences of the same action. If the consequences are bad, there is a high chance that the action will not be repeated; however if the consequences are good, the actions that led to it will become more probable.[6] Skinner called this the principle of reinforcement.[7] The use of reinforcement to strengthen behavior he called operant conditioning. As his main tool for studying operant conditioning Skinner The Skinners’ grave at Mount Auburn Cemetery invented the operant conditioning chamber, also known as the Skinner Box.[8] Skinner developed his own philosophy of science called radical behaviorism,[9] and founded a school of experimental research psychology—the experimental analysis of behavior. His analysis of human behavior culminated in his work Verbal Behavior, as well as his philosophical manifesto Walden Two, both of which still stimulate considerable experimental research and clinical application.[10] Contemporary academia considers Skinner a pioneer of modern behaviorism along with John B. Watson and Ivan Pavlov. Skinner emphasized rate of response as a dependent variable in psychological research. He invented the cumulative recorder to measure response rate as part of his highly influential work on schedules of reinforcement.[11][12] In a June 2002 survey, Skinner was listed as the most influential psychologist of the 20th century.[13] He was a prolific author who published 21 books and 180 articles.[14][15] Alpha Fraternity...

Burberry Structure

...The Burberry business model: creating an international luxury fashion brand Christopher M. Moore and Grete Birtwistle Introduction The viability, or otherwise, of a fashion brand is dependent upon the efficacy and appropriateness of the decisions of those responsible for its management. There are numerous examples of brands that have prospered and/or withered as a result of the business models that management have deployed in order to achieve their strategic (or not so strategic) objectives. Gucci, the Italian luxury brand is a case in point. In the 1950s the brand enjoyed significant success. It was the status brand of choice for Hollywood film stars and European royalty. However, just over a generation later, the brand suffered a loss of cachet and the once profitable business made significant losses. The adoption of a business strategy (which sacrificed management control over product development and distribution in favour of seemingly indiscriminate licensing agreements), undermined the credibility of Gucci as an exclusive and aspirational fashion brand (Jackson and Haird, 2003). Tom Ford’s arrest of Gucci’s decline in the 1990s has been well documented (Moore and Fernie, 2004), and has been attributed to his adoption of a business model that maximised internal controls with respect to product sourcing, brand communications and distribution. Ford’s legacy has been the implementation of an integrative business model which maximised “back-end synergies” in relation to logistics...

The Rise in Rebates

...Introduction The Burberry business model: creating an international luxury fashion brand Christopher M. Moore and Grete Birtwistle The authors Christopher M. Moore is the Director for the Glasgow Centre for Retailing and Grete Birtwistle is Head of the Division of Marketing, Glasgow Caledonian University, Glasgow, UK. Keywords Premier brands, Brand management, Fashion Abstract The performance of the British fashion brand Burberry has been determined largely by the adoption of business models which, on occasion, have been detrimental to the company’s performance. For the financial year ending 31 March 1998, Burberry saw its annual profits drop from £62m to £25m, leading financial analysts to describe it as “an outdated business with a fashion cachet of almost zero”. However, from 1997, at the instigation of a newly appointed chief executive, Rose Marie Bravo, Burberry has radically re-aligned its business model and has enjoyed, as a result, significant improvements in its business performance. Drawing from extensive documentation that was published by Burberry in support of their initial public offering (IPO), this paper will provide a review of the history of Burberry; evaluate Burberry’s re-positioning strategy as defined by the firm in their IPO prospectus; and critically delineate Burberry’s current business model. Tempere& Radicalism and the Politics

...felt that "tempered radicalism" was a concept that had been waiting to be invented. Meyerson and Scully, in my view, have grasped an important idea and have written about it in a careful and an illuminating way. It's one of those papers, I suspect; that some people will react to by thinking: "I wish I had written that!" Further, I can see others I know well in the field as fitting'the description of the tempered radical, at least in some circumstances and at different times. The reviewers, while suggesting changes, as reviewers do, were also very taken with the paper. It is intellectually interesting, and evocative. It provides us with a perspective on organizational issues that is typically glossed. It opens an arena for organizational analysis that is missed in r most theoretical frameworks. Tempered radicals, Meyerson and Scully argue, are individuals who identify with and are committed to their organizations and also to a cause, community or ideology that is fundamentally different from, and possibly at odds with, the dominant culture of their organization. Their radicalism stimulates them to challenge the status quo. Their temperedness reflects the way they have been toughened by challenges, angered by what they see as injustices or ineffectiveness, and inclined to seek moderation in their interactions with members closer to the centre of organizational values and orientations. The paper is a scholarly treatment of a complex concept. It is radical in its charge to us to see...
