The categories/sections are visible right below the NatGeo logo in a hard to miss yellow on black background, just like the logo. The first level of categories includes Home, Video, Photography, Animals, Environment, Travel, Adventure, NatGeo TV, Kids and Shop. When one hovers over any one of these categories, it is illuminated in a different colour with a dropdown box which showcases photographs and article titles about the featured content under that category. Also comes with it a horizontal submenu which gives further sub-categories.
Notifications/ Alerts
There are no direct notifications or alerts on the website as it is not a social networking or market watch website. Instead all the notifications and alerts are sent by mail to the user’s email id from the Nat Geo website.
Integration of Data
The content/data in the website has been integrated clearly and quite precisely. Every article, photograph and video has a tag which makes it easier for the data to be classified into categories. The website has a Root structure which can be explained by the following example.
Eg. Under Enviornment >> Green Guide >> Green Living >> Green Household >> Vegans and Vegetarians >> The article ‘Side Effects of Becoming a Vegetarian’
Personalization
A user can personalize their account by filling in personal details like creating a Username, specifying their Date of Birth, defining their Location, uploading a Profile Picture and a Description about themselves.
Search
The search feature is present on the top right corner of the site and has two categories that one can search from i.e. Site and Video. The search results are given as a list (site option) and as thumbnails (video option). However, the search results aren’t very accurate when one searches with keywords.
Integration with External Services
The Nat Geo site lets the user connect via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and iTunes. The connect icons for Facebook and Twitter are given just below the Search bar and the connect icons for all the aforementioned sites (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and iTunes) are given at the bottom of the sidebar.
Users can connect to the Nat Geo site via their Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and iTunes accounts. While users can connect with the Nat Geo’s Facebook and Twitter pages via their respective accounts for content, the YouTube connect will provide dedicated videos from the Nat Geo site and the iTunes account lets the Apple users download podcasts from Nat Geo.

National Geographic has designed apps primarily for Apple users but content is also provided for BlackBerry and other mobile users. Since content mainly includes high resolution photographs and videos hence, it is more suited to Apple devices which have a good screen resolution.

There is no such concept of universal login on the NatGeo website. It is not a service site or office site for the workings of an organization; hence, people can connect and sign in via their other accounts which give them flexibility of access.

The NatGeo website contains user generated content as blogs and photographs. The blogs are about people’s (users) experiences during their travels or by the NatGeo staff. Also photography contests and competitions are held which invite entries from users, young and old alike.
Security
The site has free content which can be downloaded by anyone. The only secure part is the user login which lets the users access the content from their profiles on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or their Apple account.
Feedback
The site does assists the users with obtaining subscriptions of NatGeo magazine, tv channel subscription, maps, books, and other magazines which are subsidiaries under the NatGeo name. A ‘Customer Service’ tab is present at the bottom of each page. This tab assists users with their subscriptions of the NatGeo literature in print and on TV. Some of the subscriptions for which assistance is provided are Traveler magazine, National Geographic Kids magazine, Adventurer magazine, National Geographic channel, National Geographic Maps, etc.
Design Analysis
The website is designed in a straightforward and elegant manner. The National Geographic logo is displayed at the top and the very bottom of each page of the website. The design of the website is very simple yet striking; the color schemes chosen are very elegant and soothing. Also navigating is easy for the user as each keyword indicating a different category changes to a different color on hovering. The webpage has clean divisions for different kinds of content, with a vertical line dividing one type from the other. There is a lot of information on each page, which might look messy at first glance, but it has been arranged properly with clear divisions between topics.
Content Analysis
The website contains articles on various topics under categories like Animal Conservation, Natural Disasters, Global Warming, Energy, Trip Ideas for Parks and Adventures, Educational stuff for Children, etc. The articles are well researched on and written, and the information is succinct and informative.
