...18, 2011 Conflict Analysis Part I A. People The people involved in the conflict that I witness recently were my father and my mother. My parents have been married for a little more than 22 years and according to my mother, they have been arguing since the beginning. The relationship between my parents certainly impacted the way the conflict was conducted. My parents know what pushes each other’s buttons and many times they try to avoiding hurting the other person. They have learned that if the conflict gets to intense or heated they should take a step back and return to the issue after they’ve both had time to cool down. B. Logistics The conflict took place at our home on Sunday afternoon. It was a very informal, unplanned small argument that arose after they came home from church. It wasn’t planned since before the conflict arose everything was fine between them. Because it was at our house, my parents were able to pursue and finalize the issue. There are many different abstinence programs; Alcoholics Anonymous, also known as AA, is one of the programs. An analysis of the AA program reveals that the program can be very effective, but only if the alcoholic wants help and gets the help they need. AA celebrated their 76th anniversary this year. They counted two million members participating in 115,000 groups worldwide, half of them in the U.S. AA started its first meeting in Akron, Ohio, in 1935. Bill Wilson, a businessman, and Bob Smith, a physician, started the association. They were both alcoholics. Bill Wilson achieved sobriety mainly through his association with a Christian movement. They were determined to help other alcoholics, so the men published “The Big Book”. “The Big Book” explained their philosophy, methods, and principles. Survey Summary When handing out the survey, I knew that some perceptions would be different from mine or the same. My dad, best friend, and cousin either perceived me to be the same or one was different than the rest. Although the poem states playful interactions between the father and son, the majority of the poem focuses on the father’s drunken aggression towards the boy. After discussing the poem in class, I realized, it is about a young boy, remembering a night with his father when they danced around the house aggressively. With this analysis, there is no intentional abuse on the father’s part, yet there is clear evidence of alcoholism, (“The whiskey on your breath”). Now I believe the poem is about that of my second interpretation, but both interpretations are satisfactory. There is a wide amount of evidence that, “My Papa’s Waltz,” is the story a young boy revealing the trouble he has lived through with his alcoholic father, while still possessing a great love for his dad. The boy would then be the narrator of “My Papa’s Waltz” and thus the son of an alcoholic father. It is easy to focus on the physical abuse, and anger the father has, which was targeted at the boy. In the first line of the poem, the son is speaking to his dad and says, “The whiskey on your breath/could make a small boy dizzy.” The son is telling his father, that his drinking is a problem, and the boy is worried. In the next line, he says, “But I held on like death: such waltzing was not easy.” Apparently, the thoughts here are aiming towards abuse.
