As creatures with the ability to think, humans often get curious and as a result, they speculate about what the future could bring given the way society is at their here and now. One book that focuses on this speculation of the future is Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451 takes place in a dystopian future through the eyes of Guy Montag, where firemen burn books rather than stop fires and society is obsessed with television. A prevalent theme in Fahrenheit 451 is how society as a whole is blind to the truth behind our surroundings. How humans live rejecting enlightenment in favor of the bliss that ignorance grants us, most clearly expressed by the burning of books (the rejection of knowledge) and society’s obsession with television …show more content…
Socrates and Glaucon finally agree that if the prisoner who had become informed tried to go back and rescue his fellow prisoners, they would continue to deny the truth and would sooner continue to live in what they know than that of which is foreign to them. Much of these ideas present in The Allegory of the Cave are present in Fahrenheit 451. The Firemen are much like the puppeteers in the way that they both create a world that they want society to see, whilst hiding everything else from them, by imprisoning humans into a cave or by burning books in Fahrenheit 451’s case. The wall-to-wall screens are a lot like the puppets in the cave in that the form the basis of all that society knows. Society’s wish to deny knowledge and enlightenment is best exemplified through Guy’s wife, Mildred. ...several dilemmas in the futuristic society of Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451. Relationship seems to be missing their true essence, and actions seem worthless and done carelessly. In other words, everything is meaningless. Because of his conflict with society, Guy Montag undergoes a number of trials that ultimately make him understand the value of knowledge, nature and human interactions. At 17, Clarisse McClellan is aloof, and without any close friends. Although she may be viewed as an outcast by her peers and overall community, Clarisse holds strongly to her own unique ideology, which Montag finds intriguing. Her radical questions, such as “ Have you ever tasted rain?”, (Bradbury p.21) and “Are you happy?” (Bradbury p.7) , open Montag’s eyes to his own feelings about life. He then begins to ask questions about his society, and reflect on his own life. Another challenge which causes Montag’s internal conflict to rise, is seeing a woman burn in a fire, by choice. During a firefighter assignment, Montag and the rest of his crew come to a house with an attic filled with books, and one very strong, determined lady. After setting the attic into flames, the crew informs the lady to leave. However the lady refuses to listen, not making any signs of departure. Betty, montag's boss, then begins to count down while Montag stands near,...

...this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are...

PREFACE Rationale We agreed to produce the instructor’s manual for the sixth edition of A First Look at Communication Theory because it’s a first-rate book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves...
