Running with Scissors In the nonfiction novel, Running with Scissors, Burroughs tells about his extraordinary life growing up. In his early years Augusten Burroughs lives with a father that barely takes notice of his existence and a mother who is mentally unstable. He has a vast collection of “shiny thing’s” that he polishes in his down time and refuses to go to school unless his clothes are 100% lent-less and his hair does not have a single fly away. In these young years, his father his a raging alcoholic who his mother deems wants to murder them, so at age 12 they divorced. During the stressful years of his parents constant screaming at each other, his mother sought out a psychiatrist. Dr. Finch is an odd man with an odd family. Finch’s “spiritual son,” is 33 when Agusten meets him, and also tells him that they one very big thing in common; they’re both gay. Burroughs endures so very odd encounters in the Finch home. The wife of the doctor, Agnes, enjoys eating dog kibble on occasion, the sisters of the house hold enjoy trying to diagnose each other with depression and OCD while having common arguments. Augusten and his 33 year old friend, Bookman, find a common liking towards one another. Augusten and Bookman dated when he was only 14. Around this time he accidently walks in on his mother and a Christian neighbor from down the street. He found it ironic that she was a woman. So know he knew him mother was a lesbian, and she was in love with a woman who refused to admit to anyone who she really was, nor would she leave her Christian husband and children. This took a toll on his mother for some time, as she already was mentally unstable. A little later in his life Augusten tells his stories of how the doctor believes his feces is a direct message from god.
