Analyzing Comical Lexis 'Stone Age Report'

Both texts similarly use comical Lexis to create an informal tone for the purpose to mock and entertain. 'The Stone Age Report' is a transcript of an extract from 'Horrible Histories' which is a fact based children's programme that often exaggerates and mocks historical events in order to teach yet entertain the young audience. In 'The Stone Age Report' Bob Hale, a fictional news reporter, often creates an informal tone through his use of atypical scientific terms which are often slightly altered to suit the young audience. This is evident as 'homo heidelbergensis' is abbreviated to simply 'Heidi', creating a less formal register which refers back to the initial purpose of 'Horrible Histories' that is to teach and entertain. Similarly in 'President Obama Orders An Ice-Cream' comical Lexis is used for satirical purposes to mock the typical exaggeration and overly serious tone that Obama possesses. The satirical piece published in 'Private Eye' is aimed at an older audience but aims to mock the supposed …show more content…
For example in 'The Stone Age Report' the transcript consists of mainly simple short and medium length sentences to increase the fast pace of the text. 'But not for long!' presents the fast pace of the text as an exclamation which is used to surprise the audience, as noted before, consists of mainly children. These simple short sentences allow for the easy interpretation of information and also maintain the shorter attention span of children which enjoy a thrilling and fast pace. By contrast in 'Obama Orders an Ice-Cream' there are many more complex long sentences which relate to the formal register and overly informative satirical text describing the purchase of a 'Tutti Frutti'. This is for the purpose of adopting the features and properties of Obama's speech making to allow the reader to feel a familiarity in the texts presentation as if it was the President actually
