People from all around the world have come up with different creations throughout the years, seldom for the same reason as the rest simply created differently. Some used sticks or bones to mark the days as they passed, others marked the religious feast days, and determination of seasonal and celestial events.
To begin with, the determination of season and celestial events was extremely significant to different cultures. The seasons were split into four, very similar as it is today (Source 1: Ancient Calendars). People still do that, but its viewed differently. In the early ages people would use the seasons to know what type of vegetables or fruits grows best in that specific season. People still use seasons as a source.when people go out

Ancient Calendars

...Ancient calendars kept track of significant astrological events to mark different times of the year. For agricultural societies, this was especially important. A successful harvest was dependent on starting the planting season at the right time. After years of observations and trial and error, ancient peoples were able to predict the patterns of the sun and distinguish the timing of each season. Ancient Egyptians tracked the stars and invented a calendar that would allow them to predict when the Nile would flood. One of the best examples of an early civilization that developed an elaborate calendar system is the Mayans. They had a ritual calendar composed of 13 months, with 20 days in each month, and a 365 day solar calendar (Welser-Sherrill 2007). Their calendar was impressively accurate, and it ruled many facets of Mayan life. One particularly interesting integration of the Mayan calendar is the design of the Pyramid of Kulkulkan. The square-based temple has 365 steps total, with 91 steps on each of the four sides and one shared top step to represent the days of the solar year. During equinoxes, the position of the setting sun casts shadows down the northern stairway that appear like a long slithering snake - Kulkulkan, the Feathered Serpent God (Cline). The Mayans developed numerology and mathematical understandings that were way ahead of their time, but thankfully the end of their calendar was not a...

End of World

...Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012. Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012? A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012. Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012? A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on...

The Mayans

...invasion. “Mayan civilization not only dominated the region in pre-Colombian times, but also it has captivated world attention more than a thousand years after it has collapsed (Foster)". According to Foster, the Mayan civilization has made a lasting impression on the world. Their lingering effect on the world is due to the fact the Mayans made many achievements in the areas of architecture, trade, religion, math, and astronomy. The Mayans were skilled in the field of architecture.Their architecture would include awe-inspiring observatories, palaces, ball courts, and stelaes which were intricate and detailed statues dedicated to a specific god. Mayan pyramids were based on Mesoamerican design and similar in style to the ziggurats of the ancient Mesopotamians and pyramids of the Inca. All three buildings would have a long staircase, leading up to a temple dedicated to a certain god. Although the Mayans focused on man made features for their architecture, they would also integrate natural resources. ”Mayan architecture tends to integrate a great degree of natural features...depending upon the location and availability of natural resources such as fresh-water wells, or cenotes, the city grew by connecting great plazas with the numerous platforms that created the sub-structure for nearly all Maya buildings(Miller 65-66)” According to Miller, the location and access of a natural resource, for example, fresh water or mountainous terrain would help them to consider the place of the buildings(Miller...

Synthesis Essay

...Synthesis Essay Different kinds of websites and books argue on the idea of whether the world is going to end in 2012 or not. All of them give reasons to persuade their readers as much as they could. When I went over some of the articles that talk about 2012, I asked, won’t those articles confuse people? Therefore, I have chosen two articles to see their effect over the readers. The first one is by Dr. Dr. Morrison David who is NAI senior scientist who answers a lot of questions that has been asked to NASA about 2012. The second one is by Dr. Archana who talks about different kinds of reasons why the world will end in 2012. Dr. Archana and Dr. Morrison have different opinions about 2012. Dr. Morrison says there is no evidence which proves the ending of the world is in 2012. According to him, people use this idea to make money out of it by creating different kinds of stories to persuade people (Dr. Morrison 7). In fact, He believes these kinds of concepts are products of Hollywood (Dr. Morrison 3). In the other side, Dr. Archana argues by saying “several experts are predicting that the earth is likely to end by the year 2012. The reason could be a human effect or natural disaster. From Chinese theories to scientific predictions the most likely date is the year 2012.” (Dr. Archana 1) Although Dr. Archana and Dr. Morrison agree in the presence of magnetic field, they give different view of what the earth’s magnetic field might cause. Dr. Morrison argues that there is slow movement...

Chinese Lunar Lantern Festival

...the Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in lunar calendar. Actually, Lantern Festival is not a real name in its Chinese meaning, because people can not translate that festival’s name correctly due to different culture and language. My favorite festival is the Lantern Festival because there is much fun in the Lantern Festival. In China, we call the Lantern Festival as “Yuan-Xiao Festival”. The reason why Chinese people made this name is that Chinese people have a special calendar called lunar calendar which is based on cycles of lunar phases, and it’s different from the Gregorian calendar which we use now. Thus, the Chinese character “Yuan month” means the first month in lunar calendar, and “Xiao” means the night. So this is what the festival’s name should really be. There are several versions story about the origin of the Lantern Festival, but no one knows which one is true. The most plausible origin states that the Lantern Festival is from Buddhism, and it began from Han dynasty. The emperor Ming of Han dynasty believed Buddhism, and he knew there was some tradition that Buddhists lighted lanterns to show their respect to Buddha’s relics in every fifteenth of lunar January. So the emperor Ming let people light lanterns in the temples and the palace also. Gradually, this tradition spreads up to now. In ancient times, people made some large lanterns to celebrate the Lantern Festival, and that’s why we also called...

Doomsday

...Doomsday How does doomsday become popular? 1. The Mayan calendar says sun era will end on December 21, 2012. Many believers believe that the end of December 21, 2012 is the end of the world: a wandering planet will impact the earth, thus the whole world will be destroyed. According to ancient Mayan calendar, 2012’s winter solstice marks a 144000 days of the end of the cycle. This period began in the legendary Maya creation day, already repeated 12 times. And 13 times will come to an end in 2012, to complete a full 5200 creation cycle. There is a very short time before the end of the world coming; the rumor has become the hot topic of fiction films and television programs 2. Hollywood films and social network blow up the rumor of the end of the world: People’s fanaticism to "eschatology" stem from the Hollywood disaster film "2012". As early as 3000 years ago, they accurately calculated the time about revolution of the earth and running of other stars. The accuracy even surprised modern scientists 3. Frequent natural disasters increase people’s concern: The earth goes into seismic active period, so some people’s end guesses also warm up. On March 11, 2011, level 9.0 earthquake happened...

...A. Geography >China stretches some 5,026 kilometres (3,123 mi) across the East Asian landmass. China is bordered by seas and waters eastward, with the East China Sea, Korea Bay, Yellow Sea, Taiwan Strait, and South China Sea, and bordered by landmasses on its 3 other sides, from North Korea to Vietnam. China has been officially and conveniently divided into 5 homogeneous physical macro-regions: Eastern China (subdivided into the northeast plain, north plain, and southern hills), Xinjiang-Mongolia, and the Tibetan-highlands. Its physical features are multiples. The eastern and southern half of the country, its seacoast fringed with offshore islands, is a region of fertile lowlands and foothills with most of the agricultural output and human population. The western and northern half of China is a region of sunken basins (Gobi, Taklamakan), rolling plateaus, and towering massifs, including a portion of the highest tableland on earth (Tibetan Plateau) with lower agricultural possibilities and thus, far less populated. Traditionally, the Chinese population centered around the Chinese central plain and oriented itself toward its own enormous inland market, developing as an imperial power whose center lay in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River on the northern plains. More recently, the 18,000-kilometers coastline have been used extensively for export-oriented trade, making a power shift, with the coastline provinces becoming the leading economic center. With an...
