Media Analysis - Eat Drink Man Woman

...world-weary, throat-cutting, miserable bastards we've all had to become disappears, when we're confronted with something as simple as a plate of food” (Bourdain, A, 2000). From the viewpoint of communication studies, food has been, and remains to be, a significant representation in our foundation of meaning. Food, as an everyday necessity of social life, is an important aspect to study as it expresses current social studies through distinct relationships of class, education, gender, and sexuality. In addition, the customs of sharing foods and meals have been key in communicative practices in cultures all over the world. In the following paragraphs, the Taiwanese feature film Eat Drink Man Woman, managed and written by well-known director Ang Lee, who also successfully directed movies such as Brokeback Mountain and Hulk, will be analyzed to see how food is constructed and represented in the movie. In the film it is stated by character Jia-Chien that they “communicate by eating” (Lee, A, 1994). This is important because it displays that food is a form of expression and communication, a form that is commonly misunderstood or avoided. The film Eat Drink Man Woman, articulates communication family and loved ones by representing food as a symbol of the presented themes of relationships, displayed through illustrations of love and admiration. According to PBS, “There is no closer relationship than kin, and food plays a large part in defining family roles, rules, and traditions” (PBS...

The Ice Storm - Review

...The Ice storm: Review Ang Lee has directed the film “The Ice Storm,” which is based on a novel by Rick Moody. Ang Lee is a Taiwanese-born producer and movie director working in America. He has previously directed Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility” and Yann Martel’s “Life of Pi” which became very famous. The film is starring quite a few talented actors including Kevin Kline, “Avatar” and “Alien”-star Sigourney Weaver, Tobey Maguire, who later starred in “Spiderman”, and “Lord of the Rings”-star Elijah Wood. The Movie takes place during Thanksgiving in 1973, in the suburbs of Connecticut, where a dangerous ice storm hits. The movie presents two dysfunctional New Canaan families, who are trying to deal with the consequences of the social revolution of the 1960s: The middleclass had grown, and every family wanted the perfect suburban life: a father, who worked in the city, a stay-at-home mom, two to three children and a large house in the suburbs. This does unfortunately not, give the films main characters, the happiness they are looking for: The Hood family is only held together by desperation. The father, Ben Hood, is having an affair with his neighbour, Janey Carver, and his wife is a shoplifter who is desperately trying to feel young again. Their son, Paul, is home for the holidays but is more interested in going to the city to pursue his rich-girl crush from prep school. Their daughter, Wendy, is dating the Carver family’s son Mikey, but might be more interested in his...

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

...Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon CHIN 1088 12/15/2015 Fang 1 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Let’s look back to the title of this essay. Yes, it is the very film’s name that I would like to talk about. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was released in China in 2000, and directed by Ang Lee. I believe that lots of people are not unfamiliar to this person. Ang Lee was born on October 23, 1954 in Taipei, Taiwan. His titles are not only a film director, but also producer and screenwriter. Early year, he attended the National Taiwan College of Arts, where he graduated in 1975, and then relocated to the United States, where he studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and New York University. Ang Lee made his directorial debut in 1992 with Pushing Hands and earned Academy Award nominations for his next two films, The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994). His later films include Sense and Sensibility (1995), starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant, and for which Lee earned an Academy Award nomination for best picture; The Ice Storm (1997); Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), for which he received four Oscars, four BAFTA Awards, a Golden Globe Award for best director; and Hulk (2003). He also went on to direct Se, Jie (2007) and Taking Woodstock (2009). In 2006, he became the first Asian to win an Academy Award for best director, for his film Brokeback Mountain, a small-budget, low-profile independent film based...

Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig

...Pasan Ko Ang Daigdig depicts the life of a poor girl who undergoes several hardships throughout her life and suddenly receives an opportunity to become a professional singer and improve her family’s life. Viewers may come up with one of two insights from watching the movie. First, one may be led to thinking that despite severe suffering and despair, there will always be a happy ending. For this person, the movie seems to reinforce the rags-to-riches archetype. Forget all problems at present; everything will turn out well in the end. “Mapalad ang mga inaapi.” Lupe, portrayed by Sharon Cuneta, has to endure different problems happening all at the same time – “working” as a beggar, living with a mother who doesn’t seem to have any faith in her, being visited by her abusive uncle almost everyday, demanding that they give him money for gambling, even getting impregnated by a man she doesn’t know. Her luck begins to turn around, however, when her talent for singing is discovered at a local singing contest. Things begin to go well for her, despite a few problems with her uncle and the death of her mother, and she ends up engaged to a wealthy man who also happens to offer her a record deal. At the end of the movie, of course, she chooses the man she loves and the father of her child, and they live a fortunate life, thanks to her singing career. Personally, I think that this perspective can be quite problematic, especially when one actually incorporates it in his/her everyday life...

...of facing my computer 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. Naisip ko noong nag-aaral pa ako, gusto ko na magtrabaho. Ngayong eto na ang santambak na trabaho, parang gusto ko na bumalik sa pag-aaral. I missed the high school life, simple yet fun. No demanding boss, no stressful customers, no bills to pay. The only complex problem to solve is the problem -solving in Math class of _____(name of teacher)-_____. Then I realized that its been 25 years since we graduated from high school. 25 years, silver anniversary, an exact time to have a reunion. After all, we haven't had a single reunion since we graduated from high school. I was excited of the idea of having a reunion but something in my mind is pulling me back. Can we do it? Do we have enough resources? Can we get the total cooperation of everybody? After hours of contemplating, I decided to give it a try. I posted in my facebook status something like " Guys, may idea ako, what if mag reunion tayo?" I was surprised how social media works, the idea spread rapidly and the responses are mostly positive and so encouraging. It seemed that reunion is in the offing. I was so excited that day, old memories filled my mind and I felt like a teenager again. The idea of meeting some of my friends again after 25 years is simply overwhelming that I kept thinking about it all day. Then, reality struck back. Tambak pa pala ang gagawin kong designs. So, I returned back to work but this time, I did all of it minus the stress and smiling to myself. With...

...TAGPO Gabi. As if naman re-rapin kita no. Malaki naman itong kama e. Hatiin na lang natin sa gitna Jigs: Sure ka? Yumi: Hindi mo naman siguro ako mamanyakin no? Jigs: (Matatawa) Okay ka lang? Yumi: Kung gusto mo, gamitin na lang natin iyang kumot na divider.
