...Anna Kingsley: A Remarkable Story Kimberley DeBessonet ENC 1102 Prof. Sandra McDonald Everest University October 4, 2011 Anna Kingsley, was born Anta Majigeen Ndiaye in Senegal, West Africa in 1793. She helped establish some of the communities in modern day Jacksonville and Orange Park, Florida. Daniel L. Schafer, Professor of History at the University of North Florida, spent nearly twenty-five years researching about her life. Early accounts of her life are based on history memorized by a griot, the oral historian of the village, who passes down the historical accounts through generations. “Mamadou Diouf, a Senegal Historian, speculated that at some point Anta Majigeen Ndiaye may have been recognized as a child of royalty and received special treatment at the time she was sold” (Schafer, 2003, p.18). However, early aspects of her life lack written evidence and the accounts of her being a “royal princess” are just legends. Anna Kingsley overcame the adversity of slavery because, she gained her freedom, she became the respected wife of a plantation owner and she was a successful business woman. By all accounts about that era, her story as an African slave to matriarch of the Kingsley family is a remarkable story. In April 1806 Anta, her mother and the others from her Wolof family village were captured, rounded up and herded to the coast for sale into slavery. ...Socialisation is process through which people learn the various forms of behaviour consistent with membership of a particular culture. It is during socialisation that individuals learn the values and norms that play such an important part in shaping human behaviour. Socialisation provides the skills and habits necessary for acting and participating within one’s society. The functionalist view of socialisation is based on view that society is external to the individual and human nature is passive. Socialisation is a one way process – Society in man. Durkheim’s socialisation was very similar to training or even taming. During socialisation individuals learn to desire what the culture of a society provides and in doing so their personalities become structured by the social roles they learn. From a functionalist perspective deviant behaviour can to a large extent be explained in terms of inadequate socialisation. Though Marxists give a slightly differently explanation, they see little difference between culture and ideology. It is really the values and interests of ruling class which are transmitted as culture. Marxist analyse the agencies of socialisation in capitalist societies not just family but schools, mass media and political institutions. Bowles and Gintis emphasise the importance of schools transmitting the Hidden Curriculum. The values that are transmitted are capitalist values, acceptance of authority structures and competition. ...A group of a few women born in the second decade of the century might together illustrate the diversity of the twentieth-century novelist's interests. Elizabeth Taylor (1912-1975), the author the novels The Soul of Kindness and Blaming, is a refined stylist whose swift flashes of dialogue and reflection and deft sketches of the wider background give vitality to her portrayals of well-to-do family life in commuter land. Some of her later novels are In a Summer Season (1961), and The Wedding Group (1968.) Elizabeth Taylor has humour and compassion as well as disciplined artistry, and has logically been compared with Jane Austen. So has Barbara Pym (1913-1980) who tasted fame, sadly enough, only at the end of her life (her real name was Mary Crampton). Another restrained and perceptive artist, she is a master of J f ingenuous and candid dialogue and reflection which are resonant with comic overtones. Critics I called her "modern Jane Austin. Excellent Women (1952) and A Glass of Blessings (1958) were reprinted in the late 1970s when Philip Larkin and David Cecil drew attention to the quality of her neglected work. Later novels, The Sweet Dove Died (1978) and Quartet in Autumn (1978), are no less engaging in their blend of pathos and comedy. One might well put beside these two English writers the Irish writer Mary Lavin (1912-1996), whose short stories focus on the ups and downs of family life with quiet pathos and humour.
