A comparison of the different forms of Anthropomorphism in Children’s Literature- Looking at Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Black Beauty and War Horse.
Throughout history, animals have been used in storytelling and literature. From primitive story tellers who would utilise animal adversaries to symbolise man’s continuous struggle against nature, to animals fulfilling a didactic purpose in fables such as Aesop’s, animals have been an intrinsic part of tales throughout the ages. According to Juliet Kellogg Markowsky, ‘the humanism of the renaissance eclipsed interest in […] animal stories’ yet this was revived with the writing of Black Beauty’ this revival could be said to be connected with the publishing of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. This is reiterated by Joanna Mierek who says: ‘Charles

animals.’When people were told that humans and animals had the same basic ancestors, an interest in nature was piqued and is something that has since been continuously present in literature. This essay will therefore endeavour to look at how and why authors use anthropomorphism, particularly in children’s literature. May Arbuthnot categorizes animal stories in three ways: stories that tell of animals that dress and act like people, as in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; stories in which animals talk, but act normal, as Black Beauty and War horse; and stories in which animals are objectively described. This high praise begs the question: why is The Lorax so successful at reaching out to the child reader? This essay will indentify the use of certain literary characteristics that Seuss incorporated in The Lorax, which stemmed from successful environmental children’s literature from the late seventeenth century to the twentieth century. It will establish the success of each work due to the theme or agenda it had that reflected the social and environmental issues of its time, and will then establish to what extent Seuss’s The Lorax stands as a strong example for ecocritics and educators alike, of an environmental children’s story and its impact on the child reader. To further understand the position of this paper, it is important to identify the nature of ecocentricism and the development of the interdisciplinary field. Keeling Manchester Business School, Manchester, UK Abstract Purpose – Previous research has focused on how trustworthiness can be evoked by the physical design of on-screen characters (OSCs) within the e-commerce interface. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not the OSCs representation, along with user differences, influence, how likeable, appropriate and trustworthy they are. Design/methodology/approach – A web site was created for a simulated online bookseller and 183 people from various countries participated in the experiments. OSC representations were tested under four conditions in the main experiment: facial appearance (human-like vs cartoon-like) and gender (male vs female). Findings – The results suggest that the human-like characters are more likeable, appropriate and trustworthy in general terms. However, when perceived capabilities of OSCs are measured, a mismatch can occur between expectations and capabilities of the human-like OSCs. In fact, cartoon-like OSCs, especially female, had more positive effects on the web site interface. Research limitations/implications – This study was limited to simulations of on-screen scenarios.
