Geography has always been crucial in the development of civilizations. From the dawn of civilization to before 600 A. D, it has shaped the course of advancement. Rivers, mountains, valleys, and cataracts influenced human evolution in various ways. Geography played an important part in ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and India. It still does today. Humans have developed technology because of geographical barriers. In Mesopotamia, people settled in the fertile crescent for farming. They used the silt from the crescent for their agriculture. India has a diverse geography. This diversity supports various lifestyles and cultures. They also had scarce natural resources. They had to make their homes out of mud bricks, which were not very sturdy. They were at a disadvantage, but grew up between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The rivers offered drinkable water, fertile soil, irrigation, and transportation routes. They could establish a culture and livable situation off the river. Without the river, they would not have been able to thrive for as long as they did. Yet, the river still posed a challenge to the Mesopotamian people, as the irregular flooding led to the destruction of crops, homes, and infrastructure. Given these points, they prove that geography crucially impacts humans and their lifestyles. From shaping trade routes to defining agriculture, humans continue to form their cultures around the geography that circles them. Throughout history, geography continues to benefit and constrain the development of technology and practices in societies.
