The article I selected for this weeks current event is about the continuous efforts of

Al Qaeda to attack Westerners. According to senior U.S. intelligence officials Al Qaeda

affiliates in North Africa aspires to strike more U.S. and other western targets in the region

(Herridge, 2013). Although there aren’t any confirmed reports or plotted events, U.S

intelligence continuous to investigate these allegations and tips. The concerns are related

to the attraction of foreigners by extremists the same way in which Afghanistan attracted

foreigners prior to the 9/11 attacks.

The article expands on the fight against Al Qaeda and terrorism in general. In a

recent congressional hearing held on September 11, 2012 Secretary Hillary Clinton said,

"Yes, we now face a spreading jihadist threat. We have driven a lot of the (Al Qaeda)

operatives out of ... Afghanistan, Pakistan. Killed a lot of them, including of course, Bin

Laden. But we have to recognize this is a global movement’. After the September 11th

attacks we realized that we too are vulnerable to terrorism and therefore, vigilance is of the

essence in order for the US to protect its citizens.

As we know, terrorists are opposed to westerners and they will do everything they

can to terrorize them be it within the US or outside of our borders. Recently four

Americans died in the Benghazi consulate due to terrorist attacks, therefore, although the

US has done a lot to control terrorism the journey has

Oil Drilling

...Oil Drilling Jasmine A. Richardson Freshman Seminar Friday 10:20-11:20 Throughout the years the government has spent millions of dollars on oil drilling. But what is the actual purpose of oil drilling? Is it necessary? Are we spending too much money on this one project or is it useful in the end? These questions have been debated so much over and over again. But the question is am I for or against oil drilling? Oil drilling takes up too much time and money for one simple purpose. It takes time and a workload to even begin this process. In order to perform a normal oil drilling process you have to find a land that has to be cleared and leveled, water must be nearby, if there is no water the crews have to dig water well, and lastly the crews have to reserve a pit. All of this is very expensive and damaging to the land. In an article in Bloomberg Business week it was recorded that marathon oil spent 10 million on oil drilling and that was just for one time. If oil drilling is really purposeful for the country why make it so expensive? There aren’t any other resources to finding oil? And the main objective is if we’re spending so much money on oil drilling then why are we even fighting in the war anymore? The damages to the land are excruciating and the government always ends up paying for the damages so that’s double to money they’re spending. One expensive tool they use to capture the oil is the oil rig. They use it to drill into the ground so that they can confiscate...

...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counter-terrorism Counter-terrorism (also spelled counterterrorism) is the practices, tactics, techniques, and strategies that governments, militaries, police departments and corporations adopt to prevent or in response to terrorist threats and/or acts, both real and imputed. The tactic of terrorism is available to insurgents and governments. Not all insurgents use terror as a tactic, and some choose not to use it because other tactics work better for them in a particular context. Individuals, such as Timothy McVeigh, may also engage in terrorist acts such as the Oklahoma City bombing. If the terrorism is part of a broader insurgency, counter-terrorism may also form a part of a counter-insurgency doctrine, but political, economic, and other measures may focus more on the insurgency than the specific acts of terror. Foreign internal defense (FID) is a term used by several countries[citation needed] for programs either to suppress insurgency, or reduce the conditions under which insurgency could develop. Counter-terrorism includes both the detection of potential acts and the response to related events. Anti-terrorism versus counter-terrorism Further information: Detentions following the September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attack The concept of anti-terrorism emerges from a thorough examining of the concept of terrorism as well as an attempt to understand and articulate what constitutes terrorism in Western terms. In military contexts, terrorism is a tactic...
