Example 1

Below is an example of a resource that is obtained through a database such as ProQuest. It could be any database, not just UOP database. Incorrect Example

Gaskell, S., & Nightingale, S. (2010). Supporting people with learning disabilities in acute care. Nursing Standard, 24(18), 42-48. Retrieved June 1, 2011, from http://proquest.umi.com.ezproxy.apollolibrary.com

How would you format this reference?

Correct Example

No date is required for retrieval unless the page changes on a regular basis. Use the DOI number for electronic sources rather than the name of a database: doi:xxxxxx. If the document does not contain a DOI number, use the URL of the publisher’s home page: Retrieved from http://www.xxxxxx. (Do not use periods at the end of a DOI number or URL address.)

In this case, the article did not have a doi number. The home page for Nursing Standard is http://nursingstandard.rcnpublishing.co.uk/

Therefore, it should read

Gaskell, S., & Nightingale, S. (2010). Supporting people with learning disabilities in acute care. Nursing Standard, 24(18), 42-48. Retrieved from http://nursingstandard.rcnpublishing.co.uk/

If this example did have a doi number it would read:

Gaskell, S., & Nightingale, S. (2010). Supporting people with learning disabilities in acute care. Nursing Standard, 24(18), 42-48. doi:12345678979878787

Example 2

I have another APA question for you. It is regarding websites and the use of web addresses.

When you have a website with no author, how do you list the citation in text? How do you format the reference?

Using the following information, provide the citation and reference format.

Title of web article: Envision the Future: Nursing in 2011
Date of article: 7/11/2010
No listed author, no listed organization
Web address: www.letstalk.com

I did not mention if the article from the website was a report or brochure; therefore, you do not need to use the italics in the reference. However, the italics can only be used if it was a report or brochure. Remember to place the period after the name of the article.

If it is not a brochure or report, the reference would look like

Envision the future: Nursing in 2011. (2010, July 11). Retrieved from www.letstalk.com

With the in-text citation, you want to capitalize all key words. If it is not a direct quotation (which it is not) then the page number or paragraph number is not required. The title is abbreviated. If this article had multiple sections, you could use the title of the section to make it easier for the reader to find the passage.

The in-text citation would read: (Envision the Future, 2010).
I hope that helps!

...Running Head: STUDENT PAPER EXAMPLE This is an Example of an APA Style Student Paper Gregory White, Ph.D. National University Abstract This sample paper provides National University students with an example of what features of APA style they are expected to use when writing student papers. The required features do not require several features required by APA style for papers that report original research or that propose a research project. Students who follow the guidelines embodied in this sample paper are much more likely to receive better grades from National University professors than those who ignore the guidelines. The guidelines in this example are based on the sixth edition of the Publication Manual (American Psychological Association, 2010). This is an Example of an APA Style Student Paper This sample paper presents most elements of American Psychological Association (APA) style that your instructors will expect you to follow when writing papers for National University 9sychology courses (American Psychological Association, 2010). You will use this format for longer papers such as literature reviews, expository and narrative essays, as well as for shorter papers in which you are required to write just a few pages of commentary on some reading, assigned exercise, or class activity. In all cases your instructor will tell you if an assignment requires full APA style as outlined in this paper. In almost all cases, you should use appropriate grammar...

...Rivier College Writing & Resource Center Using APA: Creating a Reference Page (Updated October 2012—APA 6th Edition) General Guidelines for Formatting a Reference Page Your reference list provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the essay. Each source you cite in the essay must appear in your reference list (except for personal communications); each entry in the reference list must be cited in your text.  Start the reference list on a new page. Type the word References in upper and lowercase letters, centered, at the top of the page on the first line below the page header; do not underline, and do not put it in quotation marks. Your reference list must be in alphabetical order according to author’s last name; if no author is given for a particular source, alphabetize by the title of the piece and use a shortened version of the title for parenthetical citations. If you have more than one work by a particular author, order them by publication date, oldest to newest. Provide first initial (and not first name) and middle initial (if provided) for all authors of a particular work. Capitalize only the first word of a title or subtitle of a work unless it is a proper noun. Italicize titles of books and journals—note that the italics extend to include the volume number of a periodical as well as the period at the end of a book title. Use “&” instead of “and” when listing multiple authors of a single work. The first line of each entry...

The people which suffer of poverty even when we see them like a kind of dog in the street, they are human and they want a decent life like normal people. Is normal to say that those poor people are living on the streets by their own choice, but like I said before, that is ignorance. ...Top Five Most Stolen Cars Math 222 7 October 2013 There is a probability that cars on the top ten stolen car list would be stolen over other cars that thieves steel in the United States annually. There is a car stolen every 26.4 seconds in the United States today. According the National Insurance Research institute that is 715,373 in the year 2012. This paper is a statistical look at what are the five most stolen in the United States (US). Attempt to show the likelihood of one of these cars stolen from the Top Five Stolen Cars in the United States. I have also done my own research to show how many cars of the top five stolen cars are in the neighborhood I live in to support the data in this paper. I will also compare it to all the other cars that are not on the list so you can see how frequently cars on the top five stolen car list appear around you. When compiling the data the realization that none of my sources raked the top five stolen cars in the same order. This is because the research materials were written in many different states. Researching further if I had used all the data together the data would give outliers in the statistical analysis. So I chose to use the data from the National Insurance Research Institute for this paper. Looking at the numbers, the number one stolen car in the US is the Honda Accord 58,596. Number two on the list the Honda Civic with 47,037 cars stolen. Statics show that it is in the number two spot with a difference of 11,559 cars...

...What is APA Style? The acronym “APA” stands for “American Psychological Association.” The APA is a professional membership organization, whose members work or have degrees in Psychology. Many years back, some leaders in this organization created a format for papers, so that they would be more readable. Their style caught on with non-psychologists, too. Eventually, APA Style became widely used, especially in colleges and universities. APA Style is a format for writing papers. This format describes proper margins (one inch at the top, bottom, left, and right sides), the font size (12 points), the font types (Times New Roman or Arial fonts only), and the spacing (papers are double-spaced). In addition, there are formats for the title page (see example) and for the list of sources used for a paper (called “citations” or “references” or “reference list”). This handout provides examples, so that you will know what the standards are for papers at the university level. In case you feel you need extra help, here are links to the Writing Labs or Writing Centers of other universities. The APA publication manual can be referred to for more detail. The purpose of a lab report is to communicate research in a clear, systematic and standardised way. Primarily, a lab report should communicate the following things: → Why did I bother? Why did I do this experiment and why is it an interesting contribution to science? → How did I do it? How did I carry out this research (this should be detailed enough so that the experiment could be replicated precisely)? → What did I find? What were the results of your study? → So What? Gcu Apa Format

...American Psychological Association [APA] Style Guide for Writing Introduction Students of Grand Canyon University (GCU) are required to use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.) for preparing written assignments, except where otherwise noted. All students should have a personal copy of the APA Publication Manual, which is available through the GCU Bookstore or local bookstores. In the interest of providing resource material for student use, this guide to APA style and format has been developed and made available. It is based on the current 6th edition of the APA Manual. However, the guide only highlights aspects of APA style and format, and so it is recommended that students use the APA Manual as a resource when writing APA-style papers. An APA template has been provided in the Student Success Center’s Writing Center for student download and use. PLEASE NOTE: The curriculum materials (Syllabus, Lectures/Readings, Resources, etc.) created and provided by GCU in the online or Web-enhanced modalities are prepared using an editorial format that relies on APA as a framework but that modifies some formatting criteria to better suit the nature and purpose of instructional materials. Students and faculty are advised that GCU course materials do not adhere strictly to APA format and should not be used as examples of correct APA format, or in place of the APA Manual, when preparing written work for class.
