Elements Of Mentoring: A Heuristic For Writing In Psychology

...psychology is the experimental report, consisting of a title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion and references section. Another form of popular writing in psychology is through trade publications, this writing is still characterized by conciseness and clarity in language however, it lacks the elements which make up a lab report. For the purposes of this paper, the scientific journal article written by Pfeifer et al titled “The Culture Of Mentoring: Ethnocultural Empathy And Ethnic Identity In Mentoring For Minority Girls” from the Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology journal and an APA website featured article by Greer titled “New Mentoring-Intensive Program Fosters Minority-Focused Research” will be the objects of an analysis into the nuances of writing in the discipline. The journal article has a relatively high impact factor for its subfield (5-year, 2.562) and the trade publication is from the leading and largest publisher in psychological science (APA). These two types of writing will be examined to support the noted purposes of psychology and to further provide reasoning for how psychology writing is...

What Should Phil Do

...how could he have prevented this problem? Yes, Phil did commit plagiarism. According to the Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism Policy, students are obligated to summarize, paraphrase, and use quotations to indicate that the content being used originated from another source. Phil failed to follow these guidelines when compiling his paper. Instead, he copied exact text without putting quotation marks around the material which is clearly defined as being dishonest. He could have prevented this problem by reading Professor Wemmick’s guidelines for the assignment before starting his paper which defines all aspects of plagiarism. If he took notes from the resources and then developed his own opinions instead of copying and pasting directly in his paper then he could have prevented this problem. In addition, Phil should have used quotes and cited the specific material he pulled from his resources. Question #3 - What are Phil's responsibilities? To whom is he responsible? What rules and guidelines should he follow? I agree with Trane that Phil was responsible for his work and allocated task within the assignment. To include submitting his paper in APA format and in accordance to Professor Wemmick’s guidelines. In addition, he was responsible for submitting his part of the assignment on time and without avoidable mistakes. I believe Phil could have avoided these errors by being organized and allocating more time to complete his work. With a busy workload and family, Phil should have...

...Citing Sources Using APA Manual (6th ed.) APA Manual and Recent Updates Section 4 This section of the Library Handbook addresses how to cite recourses used in the body and the reference list of your document using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.). Common examples for parenthetical text citations, citing direct quotes, and reference citations in the reference list are provided, but for a more comprehensive list, see the APA manual (6th ed.). Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism Plagiarism is the use of another person’s ideas or words without giving them the proper credit. Plagiarism can occur when you use someone else’s exact words without giving them credit, taking credit for someone else’s ideas, or even presenting your own past work as a new idea. Academic institutions take both intentional and unintentional plagiarism seriously, and it can be grounds for dismissal. According to the APA manual (6th ed.), the best method of avoiding plagiarism is to cite the ideas, theories, and research that directly influenced your work, cite key background information, information that may support or dispute your theory or hypothesis, or offer critical definitions or data (p. 169). Document all facts and figures that are not common knowledge. For journal articles and class assignments, APA recommends using one or two of the most representative sources for each key point, but for the literature review for a dissertation, you should include a...

Elwood St. Phoenix, AZ 85034 Good Day, TEAM B WILL CRAFT A MANUAL BASED ON THE LIBRARY SERVICE (SEE ATTACHED) Team B’s choice of creating a manual on the Library did not come without some deliberation. Most of the team’s members had no experience on how to begin the process of creating a manual of any kind. Team B’s reasoning behind choosing the Library is, although it seems like something that wouldn’t be much to cover in a manual, it has much to offer in the way of content and services. Our intentions for selecting the Library are to have enough content to constitute a solid manual, yet be small enough to allow an easy understanding of how to create a manual. Not to say the Library does not have much to offer for a manual. When contemplating between the Library and the Online Learning System (OLS), we believe that the OLS would have more content, which would make it easier to create a hearty manual. After breaking down each of the two candidates, we found that the Library has more to offer than just some databases that hold books and a program that tells its users whether they have plagiarized or not. In the end, our decision is to write the manual over the Library and its many benefits and services to students at University of Phoenix. Thank you for your time, Team B University of Phoenix Library The library consists of...

Should Vaccines Be Required for Children?

...Should Vaccines Be Required for Children? Terry J. Vervenne DeVry University Should Vaccines Be Required for Children? Shots, inoculations, vaccines, do children need them? This is the issue that needs to be discussed. Why are vaccines a necessity of current times? Even though vaccines may have some side effects, they have saved many lives as everyone already knows. They prevent many types of diseases and stop the spread of others. Just image having to send your children to school that’s filled with other children carrying diseases and viruses. Viruses such as small pox, measles, and mumps that could invade your child’s body which in most circumstances will then be brought home and spread to other family members. Therefore, every child in America needs to be vaccinated before beginning school because vaccines can prevent disease, save lives, and alleviate sick days at school. Firstly, many of these contagious diseases in children are preventable. Many of the viruses that cause diseases such as measles, mumps, or small pox are very dangerous. Sometimes the symptoms are very mild or not even noticed. While other times the symptoms can be severe, possibly even leaving a residual effect. For example, as everyone knows, if an adult male contracts mumps, this may cause sterility. Another example is polio, although preventable, once this disease is contracted it can lead to permanent muscle weakness. Once someone contracts one of these types of disease, it can possibly be fatal...

Should Marijuana Be Legal

...Should Marijuana Be a Medical Option? Isaac S Gray Colorado State University Global Campus Hum101-3 Critical Reasoning Michelle Vondley Ph.D Should marijuana be a medical option? Marijuana and its medicinal benefis has been a topic of discussion for centuries, in fact Patrick and Claire (as stated in Time magazine, 2009) states “as early as 2737 B.C., the mystical Emperor Shen Neng of China was prescribing marijuana tea for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, malaria and, oddly enough, poor memory. The drug's popularity as a medicine spread throughout Asia, the Middle East and down the eastern coast of Africa, and certain Hindu sects in India used marijuana for religious purposes and stress relief. Ancient physicians prescribed marijuana for everything from pain relief to earache to childbirth. Doctors also warned against overuse of marijuana, believing that too much consumption caused impotence, blindness and "seeing devils."” (para 1). As you can see the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes has been around for a very long time. Just as with any other medicines, drugs etc., just because it was used in “ancient times” or long ago doesn’t mean it is safe now, but to know the history in which it has been documented to be effective for medicinal purposes goes a long way in the debate of whether marijuana should be accepted as medicine. Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn't approved marijuana for any health condition, some states allow its use for certain...
