Check the Library Catalogue for call number and location(s).  When quoting directly or indirectly from a source, the source must be acknowledged in the text by author name and year of publication. If quoting directly, a location reference such as page number(s) or paragraph number is also required. IN-TEXT Direct quotation – use quotation marks around the quote and include page numbers Samovar and Porter (1997) point out that "language involves attaching meaning to symbols" (p.188). Indirect quotation/paraphrasing – no quotation marks Attaching meaning to symbols is considered to be the origin of written language (Samovar & Porter, 1997). N.B. Page numbers are optional when paraphrasing, although it is useful to include them (Publication Manual, p. 171). Apa Referencing Guide

...APA Referencing guide Academic conventions and copyright law require that you acknowledge when you use the ideas of others. In most cases, this means stating which book or journal article is the source of an idea or quotation. This guide draws from the: American Psychological Association. (2010). Publication manual            of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.).        Washington, DC: Author.   University policy mandates the use of the APA Style defined by this referencing guide. On this page: * List of references * How to cite references within the text of an assignment (including citations from secondary sources and Creative Commons) * Additional help List of References At the end of your essay, place a list of the references you have cited in the text. Arrange this in alphabetical order of authors' surnames, and then chronologically (earliest publication date first) for each author where more than one work by that author is cited. The author's surname is placed first, followed by initials or first name, and then the year of publication is given. If the list contains more than one item published by the same author(s) in the same year, add lower case letters immediately after the year to distinguish them (e.g. 1983a). These are ordered alphabetically by title disregarding any initial articles (a, an or the). * The reference list includes only the sources you have used in any submission. APA Style requires reference lists, not bibliographies...

Difference Between Apa and Mla

...REFERENCING: Reference in a research work is an essential part studying. Referencing is a standardized method of formatting the information sources you have used in your assignments or written work. Any given referencing style serves two purposes: acknowledges the source, allows the reader to trace the source. There are two major and most popular reference styles adopted by writers and scholars. MLA and APA reference styles are the common styles adopted. DIIFERENCES BETWEEN APA AND MLA American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA) are writing and formatting styles used in papers, reports, and academic essays. APA is predominately used in the social sciences while MLA is predominately used in the liberal arts and humanities. The guidelines provide overall formatting for content, style and references. While they have many similarities, there are also many differences. Despite their differences, the APA and MLA citation systems have the same overall function in a research paper—sources are acknowledged via in-text citations, each of which corresponds to an entry in an alphabetical list of works at the end of the paper, referred to as “Works Cited” in MLA Style and “References” in APA Style. However, the MLA Handbook also mentions some variations, such as a “Works Consulted” list, which contains sources not cited within the body of the paper, and an annotated bibliography, which includes a brief description or evaluation of each source. APA Style...

Introduction to APA Style What is APA style? APA is an editorial style recommended by the American Psychological Association (APA) for preparing scholarly manuscripts and student research papers. It is the standard format for papers, articles, and books in the social sciences. In addition to providing standardized rules for formatting a paper (margins, line spacing, etc.), APA style provides a consistent method for citing ideas, quotations, facts, and paraphrases borrowed from other sources. This standardized format for identifying sources used in a paper makes the paper more credible and ensures that other authors are given credit for their original thoughts and ideas. Are there other styles? Just as APA style is used by teachers in the social sciences, teachers in the arts and humanities may ask you to format your paper in MLA style; a history professor may ask you to use Chicago or Turabian; a biology professor might want you to submit a paper in yet another format. There are slight differences between the formats and each has a unique set of rules. Note the differences between the APA and...

...Student earning L Centre What is a referencing system? (Author-Date System) HARVARD REFERENCING There are many variations of the Harvard referencing style. This leaflet is based on the AGPS Style Manual (6th edn), 2002. It is advisable to check with each lecturer as to which variation they require you to use and to follow that advice for the work submitted to that lecturer. A referencing system is a standardised way of informing readers of the sources of information, ideas, graphics etc. that are used in any given work, e.g. your assignment. There are a number of different referencing systems, but those most commonly used at Flinders University are: • Harvard (an author-date system) • APA (American Psychological Association, also an author-date system) • The Note system (including footnotes and endnotes). Author-date systems use the authors’ surnames and the year of publication within the text of a work to refer to a detailed list of full references at the end of the work. The Note system uses numbers within the text to refer to details either at the bottom of the page (footnotes) or at the end of the work (endnotes). See the Student Learning Centre (SLC) brochures on the APA and Note systems for details on these systems. Referencing and academic integrity The use of a referencing system to acknowledge other people’s work, ideas and expression is integral to academic writing and academic integrity. See SLC leaflets on Academic Integrity or the 'Academic Integrity...

...Referencing What is referencing? Referencing is acknowledging all of the material (books, articles, electronic resources – collectively known as your sources) that you have used in writing your assignment. Because this is other people’s work / ideas, you need to acknowledge their influence and ideas within your work. “Why bother?” or Reasons for referencing Referencing is an academic requirement. It is unethical (and can be illegal) to pass off the intellectual property of others as your own. This is called plagiarism. Plagiarism is regarded as a very serious offence (see your programme’s Student Handbook). Learning to reference correctly is your best protection against charges of plagiarism. HINT: Whenever you read, take notes, or photocopy any material that you might use in an assignment, immediately copy the full reference information onto your copy. If you can’t reference it – you can’t use it ! What is APA? There are multiple “styles” of referencing. The major ones are the Chicago, Harvard and APA styles. Each is slightly different from the other. The AUT faculty of Health uses the American Psychological Association (APA) system of referencing. The current edition of the APA style is the 5th edition. Below are the basic elements of the APA style of referencing. These are intended as guidelines only. You may find these guidelines do not cover your specific needs. For further information you can consult the APA style manual held in the library. The Call No. is...

A paper format around 3-4 pages following appropriate APA Style format is required.  See rubric for grading.  Citations and references are required to reinforce your comments and ideas (looking for at least 2 additional credible sources than the textbook).  Also add a Reference Page (practice using APA style). Avoid using 1st person style writing.  Instead or using I, substitute with this author or avoid using a specific reference.  For instance, Starbucks coffee tastes great; instead of “I think Starbucks coffee is great.”   When referencing your sources in your case study include the author and year of publication.  For example, “WalMart’s everyday low pricing strategy differs from Kohl’s high/low pricing  in the following ways…” (Williams, 2012). This helps to ensure everyone is using citations and practicing their APA formatting and using course materials that supports your perspective.  Due date | Sunday, January 10, 2016, 10:55 PM...
