“APO SHOW” Out of all the plays, I think this was by far the best one to me, just because of the different mini plays, and the comedy that came from them all. The first show I would like to discuss would be “Sure Thing”. I really enjoyed this one. This play was mostly about this guy trying to pursue this woman, and he starts off badly a few times so a bell is rung for him to begin again. This one had a lot of humorous moments in it. They were both very funny, especially the guy. I think they had a mutual like towards each other and it led them to go on a date to the movies. In the end, what he was trying to pursue, he finally got, but it just wasn’t the right timing for him in when her first attempted to ask her on a date. He also had to change up his conversation so it could be more respectable to the girl Betty. The second play was not as exciting as the first. I do not think it was as funny as the first one also because it was not as exciting to watch also. It involved one character, which was Mitch, he was talking to the crowd about a type writer, but comes to the conclusion that he is a typewriter himself, In this play he is trying to pursue something himself also, but I feel like he doesn’t know how to pursue this certain something. This something turns out to be a piece of paper, and in the end he exchanges names with this piece of paper. The difference between this play and that play is that he wasn’t trying to pursue this something at first until he seen it after explaining to the audience on how he is a typewriter. The third play “Foreplay, or the Art of the Fugue” was similar to the other three because it consisted of a pursuit also. Three guys are trying to run game on these girls so they can end up having sex with them at the end of the night. They take them on this circular golf course and use their famous lines they always use but they are starting to miss shots that they aren’t always missing, and the girls are asking questions that are confusing them and deviating them from their plan for the night. I think these three plays have different styles of pursuit but in the end they all end up getting exactly what they want, not just when they wanted it. The fourth play was the only one that I did not really understand, but it was still funny. But, it did somewhat tie into the theme of the pursuit of something. I don’t know if this tied into the theme of timing and pursuit but a man named Phillip walked in a bread shop in the pursuit of some bread, by the way he was smelling it, but he sees someone, whom used to be his lover and at that moment it distracts him from getting his bread and they start to sing a song about if this guy that this woman fell in love with. Then eventually in the end he ends up getting his bread. I still thought maybe I interpreted this wrong but it did somewhat tie into the theme of the other ones but a different life situation. The fifth play, I thought The Philadelphia was funny also, because the two guys were funny as the other casts. Mark comes in upset about how everything is going wrong in his life, and he wants it change at that moment, but it doesn’t and the guy he is meeting Al explains to him that he is in Philadelphia and how that you have to relax and ask for the opposite of everything to get what he wants, and he starts to follow those instructions and everything starts to change dramatically for him, but bad things start to happen to Al. In the end, the mark finally gets what he was pursuing, which was a change in his luck. In the sixth show, “English Made Simple” this speaker is trying to help these two people work on being able to say what they feel when they see each other. At first the two were not able to say what they needed to say to each other. As they press on they are eventually able to express their feelings to each other. This theme ties very much with the rest, because all three characters were in pursuit of a goal. The speaker’s was to get the two people to express their feelings, and the two people’s goals were to express themselves. In the “Variations on the Death of Trotsky” Trotsky’s wife reads to him out of the encyclopedia that he will die the next day because he was smashed in the head. Trotsky is trying to find out before he dies for good, which smashes him in the back of the head and why. He eventually finds out that it was Ramon, they guy who works in their garden, but ends up being an enemy to him. In the end, he says a speech to his wife and eventually dies with his questions answered; he also was in pursuit of something. In the play “The Universal Language,” this young girl decides to join a class in pursuit of learning a different language and to get confidence in her to speak up and lose the stutter that she has. The teacher, Don at first was not going to teach her until he finds out her situation and he has an instant attraction to her, because she understands his language. She learns a great bit about this language to come to find out that it is not real, but she forgives him because she developed the confidence to speak without a stutter, and learn a new language and they end up together by the end because she also gained feelings for him. The last show, “Words, Words, Words,” was one of the funniest, but I didn’t really understand if monkey people were pursuit was to somehow leave the facility they were in or to type some words in the typewriter. During the scene they are discussing ways that they could be released out of that place and why they cannot seem to get any words on the typewriter even though their vocabulary was extremely high, which was weird to me, but it was extremely hilarious. By the end of the play, Kafka eventually start to come up with words to type on the typewriter, and the guy monkey at the end, I think his name was Swift, but he starts to type also. These nine poems all have the same themes that correlate with each other. These poems are different situations that involve love, one-night stands, death, low self-esteem, and problems with producing in at the right time. The styles are all different, because of the time period and situations. The overall theme that ties them all together; I feel like is that a person will never get what he wants right then or there, but if they work hard at it they will get what they are pursuing, and maybe a little more. Timing and hard work are key things in life.

...conclusion that art was a very misunderstood attribute of life. Many people did not accept that art could represent an artists’ mood or surroundings. Throughout the chapter it explains that many paintings of streets, architecture, and ordinary people emerged around the 1900s. This new art form known as realism portrayed the everyday life of people in poverty and in urban America. This time was known as the beginning of the truth. Realism was much different from the European paintings. Realism focused on the life on the streets in America. Many American’s were disgruntled about the fact painters would paint images of society suffering and in misery. This misunderstanding lead to the hardships painters faced while contributing to art galleries and shows. Realism paintings were too much for some gallery owners and they banned the art from the gallery. Robert Henri and the eight changed this a few years later. Robert understood that society wasn’t accepting this new generation of paintings, so he opened a school for painters freely to their work. Once the school was open painters began freely painting and eventually contributed to the realism movement. Robert eventually took eight men under his wing and mentored them. Chapter 30 took realism to another realm. It focused on the fact of color and brushwork. Artists began to use color to express certain mood or meaning within their paintings. For example American Gothic, by Grant Wood. He demonstrated realism by painting a picture of his...

Media Overload

...Ronald Tiffany GE217 WED6pm 10/7/2010 Choice Essay 1 Media Overload The media is involved in every aspect of life. Whether it is personal or just about the weather the media is there. What about these talk show filled with drama like they usually are but they always seem to catch people attention while flipping through channels on the T.V. I sit and wonder what would make these people put themselves out in the limelight and air out there dirty laundry. Then it comes to me that our society loves drama and sad to say most of the drama is other peoples suffering. Not only is it on these talk shows that we see this, it is also in our everyday local news coverage. The more and more we see this on T.V. the more we will see it in our own backyard. The media and the entertainment world have a big role in the way our society’s moral is changing for the worst. These games our children are playing have far too much violence and foul language. Take the game Grand Theft Auto, you shoot people, steal cars, and even pimp out women to earn more points so you can move up to be the biggest maddest thug on the planet. Yes they are rated for certain ages and they do warn you about the language and the violence but parents still buy them for their children because society as a whole doesn’t see a problem with it. That’s where the media and the entertainment world play a part in this whole cycle. So now when our future generation becomes parents themselves they will allow their kids...

Trying to Find Chinatown

...The drama “Trying to find Chinatown” by David Henry Hwang, the short story “Brownies” by Z. Z. Parker and the poem “I, Too” by Langston Hughes all deal with stereotypes and how the characters in each work deal with them. While differently illustrated by each author, the theme is the same: overcoming the obstacle of stereotypes. In “Trying to find Chinatown”, the main character, Benjamin, is trying to find his roots and feel a sense of belonging. On his way he stops and talks to Ronnie a street musician of Asian descent to ask for directions. Interestingly, Ronnie greets Benjamin with less than stellar enthusiasm because he calls Ronnie’s instrument a fiddle instead of a violin. Ronnie blasts Benjamin with, “If this was a fiddle, I’d be sitting here with a cob pipe, stomping my cowboy boots and kicking up hay.” (page 1825). The anger evoked in this line is strong and little does Ronnie know that he and Benjamin share similar heritages. Benjamin is not only faced with dealing with an ignorant stereotypical slur but ironically so by the very heritage he has come to embrace and is looking to find solace in. Benjamin calls down Ronnie and tells him that “it’s very stereotypical to think that all Asian skin tones conform to a single hue”. (page 1827) Despite being told he doesn’t fit the mold of an Asian American, Benjamin goes on to find his place in Chinatown and “felt immediately…a world where all things were finally familiar” (page1829). Similarly, “Brownies” deals with...

Alternative Jounralism

...Daily Show is the epitome of alternative journalism these qualities emerged in the shows October, 29th 2013 episode in particular. Geoffrey Baym states in his article “The Daily Show: Discursive Integration and the Reinvention of Political Journalism”, he believes The Daily Show is a prime form of alternative Journalism and the shows ability to function as both entertainment and news has brought on mass appeal of all generations. Drawing on live broadcast coverage of public statements and government proceedings, the content of The Daily Show resembles much of the mainstream news media. The show contains a few major content elements where within each; various aspects of alternative journalism emerge. One is the satire news update. The daily show advances beyond the style of “fake news” like other talk shows. The satire segment often focuses on national and global issues of significance left unquestioned. For example in The Daily Show’s October, 29th episode Stewart begins the program with a segment called “is that a good thing or bad thing”, within this segment he is able to critique the news by showing his audience live broadcast coverage from mainstream news organizations such as CNN. The parody asks us to consider just what a journalist’s job should consider. The Daily Show also violates normal journalistic convention in very necessary ways. This allows it to interrogate power over mainstream news. This is due to the fact that both mainstream news and The Daily Show may cover...

Truman

...In this response paper I will talk about the movie “Truman Show”. And some opinions and results which I got from it and the movies connection with popular culture First of all, I’ll start from the content of the movie. The main character is someone “who has been adopted by a company for the first time”, called Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey), who lives in a giant jar which can be seen from the space (the only building can be seen from space after the The Great Wall) unaware of the World. Truman , who thinks that his little world is “real”, eventually starts to figure out that everything happens around him just about a repetition and everything around him is just about a fiction. However , escaping from his fictional world is not easy as he estimates. Soon, Truman gets forced to face his fears, to go an “unknown” from the world that he is safe inside in order to escape from his “fake world”. In the last scene, director of the Truman Show (Ed Harris) tries to trick Truman (and “of course” the audience).Directors says “ there is nothing better at the “outside”, even inside is better and safe.”. But Truman doesn’t prefer the prison that he is in and escape from it. When I came to my conclusions about the movie is trying to send a message to the audience. For example, in the Truman afraid from sea because he lost her father at sea. Symbolic meanings in any language of the sea means freedom. Truman is afraid of the sea because it is not free. Truman does not exceed the sea following...

Cosby Show

...Chapt 1 Assignment “The Cosby Show” Growing up in the 70's and 80's were very challenging. I came from a very traditional family, meaning both parents were in the home as well as all 7 of my siblings. My father worked hard and my mother stayed at home and raised us for a portion of that time. We often watched a lot of family oriented shows, “ Eight is Enough'', which was my mother's favorite.(I wonder why) Little House On The Prairie, The Jeffersons, etc. My personal favorite was the Cosby Show, although Little House on the Prairie was definitely in the running. One of the reasons I favor The Cosby Show is because it gave me hope. Growing up in the projects was not a joyful experience, although my parents did a great job with what they had. The Cosby Show depicted family in a very positive way. It provided an alternative to the stereotypical African American family. Unlike other black sitcoms such as “Good Times”, which always left you depressed after watching the show, “ The Jeffersons'', whose nanny was very loud and opinionated. The Huxtables were upper class people. Cliff Huxtable( Bill Cosby) was a doctor and his wife Claire( Phylicia Rashad) was a successful lawyer. The family structure was that of a nuclear unit or modern family. The gender roles of the parents were that of egalitarian. They were a two parent home with 5 children. They both balanced the responsibilities of supporting their children through work and quality time. The gender of the children were...

An over View of the Broadway Musical, Up to and Including Show Boat.

...An over view of the Broadway Musical, up to and including Show Boat. Early 1900’s New York City and the operetta was becoming quite popular; a mix of music and drama, it’s influences stretched back as far as Greek theatre and other types of European opera. No doubt at the time it held some sort of retro appeal. In London a similar movement was taking place, more influenced by a vaudevillian styling, it was more comedic; designed specifically for soldiers on leave (the idea was to bolster morale, hence why theatres stayed open during the course of World War One) This style of musical comedy was also characterised by the incorporation of popular song and dance styles. Fast forward to 1920’s/1930’s and, much like the emigration of disco in the 90’s in reverse, these styles combined to form the precursor to the known Musical. The Term ‘Musical’ itself was used in generality to describe the form and, obviously, stuck. This emerging form featured the use of contemporary song styles, primarily Jazz and Rag-Time, Jerome Kern’s incorporation of syncopation and Jazz-like progression into many of his songs. Popular Dance element in any production and thusly, dance bands influenced the traditional pit orchestra; jazz elements again more prominent with the use of muted brass and Jazz style piano. The rising popularity of radio broadcasting was instrumental in the expanding appeal of the musical from 1920’s-40’s. Probably the most important development of this new form was...

...Title of the thesis: From ‘The Cosby Show’ to ‘Blackish’: Cultural Analysis comparing gender roles. By: Dominique Hoskins Shorter University Statement of the problem: This study needs to be conducted because over past years throughout television, there have not been enough representations of wealthy African-American families being portrayed. Many shows like My Wife & Kids have tried to carry out with their own originality. So far none have been able to connect with audience in an influential way as The Cosby Show. Lit Review: Slide one: * Tannen (2010) mentions that both masculine and feminine conversational styles are equally valid; her use of the term genderlect reflects this idea. * Describing them as masculine and feminine styles presents them as two distinct cultural dialects rather than as inferior or superior ways of speaking also * Tannen (2010) identifies that each gender uses its own distinctive language codes to draw different inferences from the same message. Slide two: Studies using Genderlect Styles Purpose (importance) of the study: The purpose of this study will be to discover the progress of wealthy educated African-American families portrayed on television. The central concept being studied are the married couples from the 1980’s sitcom The Cosby Show and 2015’s Blackish. Reality

...Sample essay Year 10 Philosophy What is the best way to relate to reality; control it or give up one’s desire to control it? I am going to argue that it is not necessary to give up one’s desire to control reality, but one must be realistic about how much of it one can actually control. I will focus especially on the lessons we can learn about this from the movie The Truman Show. At the outset, we need to distinguish between reality and imagination. Our brains have the remarkable ability not only to hold pictures of what has happened, but also to create pictures of what we think will happen, or could happen. This is our imagination. Without imagination, we would not be able to think sensibly about the future. Our imagination allows us to project ourselves into the future. But on the other hand, even though our imagination gives us a mental construction of the reality around us, it is not that actual reality itself. Let’s face it, there are thousands of things happening in the world around us that we do not know about and cannot imagine. Truman in The Truman Show has no idea what sort of machinations Christof is engineering to shape his life. All the people around Truman are acting. His so-called wife is an actress who is being paid to act as his wife. Truman, at first, cannot imagine this is true. He cannot imagine that Marlon is not ‘really’ his best friend, or that what Marlon says to him is actually being set up through an earpiece, with the words first being spoken...

Kpwr 106 Radio Channel Analysis

...Channel Analysis Radios have been around for more than 100 years now and it has played a big role in our modern society. Through radio, news, music and advertisements have thrived. However, as technology advanced time after time, the radio stations had many other stations to compete with. For this assignment, I chose KPWR 106 which is hip-hop station to examine and learn why this station is a successful one. I think there are two types of radio personalities: those that plan an actual show, and those that have no idea what they want to talk until the station starts. A planned show keeps the listeners tuned in and makes the listeners want to come back to it often. PWR 106 is seems unplanned but maintains the good hit playlist and engaging talks. There are several things to keep in mind, which I have learned from this assignment. The time frame was 10:30 to 11:30 in the morning on March 19th,2014. The station was called KPWR106 and it mainly played rap, hip-hop and R&B. The Format of the show kind of unique. The first 15 minutes, it played 2 music back to back and then one 30 second commercial and repeated once more. However after 15 minute mark, it had about 9 commercials non-stop 15 to 30 second playing time each. Following the unending commercials, 9 songs were played non-stop again, each one playing for about 3 minutes. So in total there were total of 18 commercials for about 11 minutes. They advertised auto insurance, school degree programs, loans, cars, sandwiches, chocolate...

How Comedians Use Their Bodies to Tell Impossible Messages

...held down blacks after slavery with most rights like the right to vote snatched away from blacks. To challenge this, Chris Rock in one of his acts on stage (class DVD) used his body in a way that looked like a horse and said, “Black people didn’t really have a problem of looking for a cab, he was the cab! White folks jumped on his back and said main street!” this just exemplifies and brings to the fore that whites even after slavery are still hell bent on using blacks and holding them down as much as possible, the only difference now is that blacks get paid for their services unlike before. When Blacks first came into comedy it was in the form of white men who painted their faces to look like blacks and played in Black face Minstrel shows. They portrayed black people negatively for the amusement of a white audience so it was important for Black comedians to come into comedy and tell their own stories. This task was not easy to achieve in the beginning. Blacks had to take on any role available to them. Lincoln Perry was one of the first black...
