Part I

Define the following terms found in Week One and Week Two readings:

Term Definition
Diversity
To have a mix of race, religion, sex and or age of someone.
Ethnocentrism
Judging another culture based on how you were raised or the culture you were raised in. Judging a person based on your beliefs and upbringing.
Melting pot A group or nation of people that are all from different backgrounds and nationalities.
Minority group A group of people that is far outnumbered by their surround community or population.
Emigration

Immigration

Culture
A way a person acts based on how they were raised. A norm that is with a community or nation.

Part II

Answer each question in 250 to 350 words:

1. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

Groups of people can be identified in many different ways. From how they look, religious

beliefs, what they wear, and what language they speak, food they eat and even wealth. One of the

main ways a group can be identified is through sex. This would be the quickest way to identify a

group. Instantly you can determine if someone is a male or female. As well as determining the

sex of someone you can just as easily determine the race by skin color. This may allow you to

narrow a group down. Although more information would be needed to pin point a person to their

actually origin or birth place. There is many ways to distinguish a certain group of people. This

may be considered stereotyping, but it is pretty common to see one group of people all doing

some of the same things. You could even identify a group of people by the type of food

commonly eaten and served. Many nationalities tend to eat at least one type of food that can be

identified and related to a certain nationality. The same can be said for a language that a group of

people may be speaking. Although there may be common languages spoken among different

groups you can sometimes pick up on accents or different words that pin point a region where

that a group resides.

Identifying a group may not always be easy without research. Without stereotyping a

person and actually listening to them a group can be narrowed down pretty quick. Identifying a

group can be done by race, religion, sex and language spoken. It can be accomplished by almost

anyone just as long as that person is well informed and not quick to pass judgment.

2. Why do people label and group other people?

I feel that people label and group others because of how we are raised and it is the norm. I

believe that most people are not well educated on the subject of cultural diversity and choose

to just stereotype rather than take the time to learn. The American society tends to go off of

norms and how they were raised. If a person was told all their lives that all Hispanics for

example are the same, that is all they know. It is much easier to group people to together than

to learn each nationality and the differences. Being born and raised in Arizona I have seen

firsthand how people label and group individuals together. Because of Arizona's close

proximity to Mexico the majority of the people all think that just because you speak Spanish

you are Mexican, which in fact is not the case. There has been numerous times when I have

been asked if I am from Mexico just because I speak Spanish. I think this is a true testament

that people label groups because they are uneducated and don't want to take the time to learn.

If all a person is surrounded around he or she will always associate the race or religions

together. I believe that most people will continue to group people together, it is just easier to

do so. Everyone has an idea of what each nationality looks like and if people look similar

they will be automatically from the same country, which many of the times is not true. This

is something I really challenge myself on and I try not to jump to conclusions based on how

someone looks or how they speak. Humans will always label and group individuals based on

race and religion. Until people take the opportunity to educate them this will be a continued

problem throughout the world.

...operated by the owner of the mobile operating system, such as the Apple App Store, Google Play, Windows Phone Store, and BlackBerry App World. Usually, they are downloaded from the platform to a target device, such as an iPhone, BlackBerry, Android phone or Windows Phone, but sometimes they can be downloaded to laptops or desktops. Mobile apps were originally offered for general productivity reasons, including email, calendar, contacts, stock market and weather information. However, public demand and the availability of developer tools drove rapid expansion into other categories, such as mobile games, factory automation, GPS and location-based services, banking, order-tracking, and ticket purchases. For this assignment I will focus on two apps, Swell Radio and MyFitnessPal. I am a person who is just getting my feet wet when it comes to the tech sector. App Developer

...A 12-year-old app developer TEDxManhattanBeach · 04:40 · Filmed Oct 2011 I've always had a fascination for computers and technology, and I made a few apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. I'd like to share a couple with you today. My first app was a unique fortune teller called Earth Fortune that would display different colors of earth depending on what your fortune was. My favorite and most successful app is Bustin Jieber, which is — (Laughter) — which is a Justin Bieber Whac-A-Mole. I created it because a lot of people at school disliked Justin Bieber a little bit, so I decided to make the app. So I went to work programming it, and I released it just before the holidays in 2010. A lot of people ask me, how did I make these? A lot of times it's because the person who asked the question wants to make an app also. A lot of kids these days like to play games, but now they want to make them, and it's difficult, because not many kids know where to go to find out how to make a program. I mean, for soccer, you could go to a soccer team. For violin, you could get lessons for a violin. But what if you want to make an app? And their parents, the kid's parents might have done some of these things when they were young, but not many parents have written apps. (Laughter) Where do you go to find out how to make an app? Well, this is how I approached it. This is what I did. First of all, I've been programming in multiple other programming languages to get the basics down, such as...

Bad Apps

...So what constitutes a badly-built app? Verizon recently started rating apps on three key criteria: battery consumption, data usage and security risks. For now it is only concentrating on the Top 50 Android apps, but the guide provides useful insight into what Verizon considers best-practice standards for the key criteria. mobiThinking acknowledges there are more key criteria to creating a quality app, in terms of usability, device compatibility, stability etc – and that’s true – but arguably, problems with battery consumption, data usage and security risks are some of the most important of all quality assurance (QA) criteria because: a) they are mostly hidden from consumers; b) they are more easily overlooked by developers; c) the consequences are far reaching. Bad apps affect the performance of the device, battery and network; inflate the phone bill; and most consumers blame the device, operator… anyone except the real culprits. If the user interface (UI) is rubbish or the app keeps crashing, there’s little doubt the app is to blame and users will happily broadcast their verdict in their app reviews. 1) Battery consumption Some mobile applications use a lot of energy, causing unnecessary drain on the (already heavily taxed) device battery. There are numerous reasons why this occurs and, where it is caused by bad, ignorant or devious development practices, it can and should be rectified. Causes of battery depletion include: • Apps that run without the user’s permission...

...(games and apps for video games and iPhones/iPads/etc.) that creates value, neither Apple nor Nintendo lets the developers capture all potential value. Nintendo restricted developer value creation by limiting the number of licenses to be distributed and the number of NES titles that could be developed a year. Apple takes a similar approach, as developers have to go through a rigorous approval process before their app is accepted into the Apple app store. However, Apple does not limit the number of apps a developer can release a year, unlike Nintendo. Even with its rigorous approval process, Apple does not have a hard number quota of apps for each developer. In addition, Apple does not force its developers into exclusivity agreements like Nintendo does. iOS developers are free to work on other app platforms like Google Play. Thus Apple does not as heavily limit the total value created by its developers when compared to Nintendo. Another similarity is that both Apple and Nintendo charge fees to its developers in order to increase their own value captured. Nintendo does so with licensing fees, while Apple’s Software Development Toolkit charges developers a fee for its user-friendly platform to create applications for the Apple app store. Apple also captures value from its developers by retaining 30% of the revenues for each transaction in the App Store, leaving only 70% to the developers. 3. Apps

...In information technology, an application is a computer program designed to help people perform an activity. An application thus differs from an operating system (which runs a computer), a utility (which performs maintenance or general-purpose chores), and a programming language (with which computer programs are created). Depending on the activity for which it was designed, an application can manipulate text, numbers, graphics, or a combination of these elements. Some application packages offer considerable computing power by focusing on a single task, such as word processing; others, called integrated software, offer somewhat less power but include several applications.[1] User-written software tailors systems to meet the user's specific needs. User-written software include spreadsheet templates, word processor macros, scientific simulations, graphics and animation scripts. Even email filters are a kind of user software. Users create this software themselves and often overlook how important it is. The delineation between system software such as operating systems and application software is not exact, however, and is occasionally the object of controversy. For example, one of the key questions in the United States v. Microsoft antitrust trial was whether Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser was part of its Windows operating system or a separable piece of application software. As another example, the GNU/Linux naming controversy is, in part, due to disagreement about the...
