Appendix A: U.S Health Care Timeline

Use the following timeline or create a timeline of your own with eight major events, including the four provided below, from the last 50 years. You may change the dates in the box to match the dates of your events. Include the following in your timeline: Medicare and Medicaid
HIPPA of 1996
State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)
Prospective Payment System (PPS)

1935 | Medicare was signed in 1935; however it did not pass into law until 1965. (ssa.gov, 2012). Medicare was first used for retirement payments only. In later years disability was added to the program.Medicaid was adopted around the same time as Medicare. It was initially meant for the elderly for hospital coverage. In 1965 they added other programs for the Medicaid such as low income families to help receive health coverage. | 1982 | Prospective Payment System (PPS) was created to help control the cost/payments. Medicare would send payments to the hospitals. With the PPS admissions and doctor’s visits were put into categories. (Phillips, 2001). | 1985 | Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), was introduced in order for employers who had insurance coverage to have the option to continue the coverage if they had a job loss. (Paschall, 2010). | 1996 | HIPPA of 1996 was passed in 1996. The reason for HIPPA is to protect people about their health information. Under the HIPPA law no one is permitted to give out information about a person’s health for any reason without the patient’s permission. The HIPPA law has been really enforced since most data is transmitted through electronic devices. (Anderson & Reiber, 2010) | 1997 | In 1997, State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) was signed into law. It did not become fully funded until 2002. (“A profile of Medicaid,” 2000). The SCHIP is for children that do not qualify for Medicaid but they cannot afford other health insurance. | 1997 | Balanced Budget Act of 1997 was signed by President Clinton to help manage the deficit budget. The Act also helped create The Children’s Health Insurance Program. | 2006 | Medicare Part D was provided to help getting prescription drugs. (Lau, D. T., Briesacher, B., Touchette, D. R., Stubbings, J., & Ng, J. H. 2011). | 2010 | The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed in March of 2010. This Act will enforce all employers to offer health coverage to employees, eliminates any discrimination for pre-existing health issues, and allows children to be covered on parents insurance until age 26. |

Veriform Appendix

...The vermiform appendix, more commonly known as the appendix, is a blind-ended tube connected to the caecum in the large intestine and is located in the right lower quadrant and is approximately 9cm long is considered a part of the digestive system (Derrickson, 2009). The appendix consists of a four layered tissue; from deep to sacrificial they are the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa (Derrickson, 2009). The appendix is considered a vestigial organ, an organ that once had an important role in past ancestors but no longer in present humans, and is thought to have had an important role in the digestion of plant matter (Ansaloni, Catena & Pinna, 2009). It is debated to currently have some role in immune functioning due to its association with the substantial lymphatic tissue, and for this reason is considered a part of the lymphatic system (Ansaloni, Catena & Pinna, 2009). As mentioned previously the appendix, in humans, is a vestigial organ and is no longer considered vital to human life and is commonly removed through surgery from acute appendicitis (Zissin et al., 2003). Acute appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix, common symptoms include pain in the lower abdominal quadrant, nausea and vomiting. If left untreated the appendix can rupture or cause an abscess in the peritoneal cavity, which can in some circumstances lead to death (Hernandez, Jain, Rosiere, & Henderson, 2008). The process of relieving acute appendicitis is usually through surgery...

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions: • How do you currently approach the weekly readings in the course? Currently, I approach weekly course reading material in a fairly unconventional way. My weekdays are usually incredibly hectic between my job of working with my clients and my day to day personal life with my children, so finding any quality reading time is hard during the day time hours. I generally have all reading material downloaded to my laptop in advance as we all should so I can get in a bit of reading time during my break time and my clients nap time. The problem with this is, even though it is quiet and my break time, there is still quite a bit of activity going on around me having to deal with small odds and ends, breaking any concentration I have and understanding of the text. I do get a small amount of time in peace when I get home and right before the kids get home after school in which I use to get in some reading and study time. This time is definitely quality time as my concentration is at its greatest and I can get something done. The night hours, usually after dinner, is where things have been really...

I think that one of the most common ways that people use to identify a group in the United States is by Gender and Race. This is because of very apparent physical differences that separate one group from another. It is easy to determine a difference of a group by Black, White or Hispanic. However, just because a person is white doesn’t necessarily mean that they are American. For example, a German male will have the same physical appearance as an American, or even a Polish male. Observing a group and focusing on behaviors, cultural patterns, and language can help determine a group by Ethnicity. In South America an Ethnic Group may...
