Apprentice Synthesis I. The first principal learning I took from the Apprentice series is having a balance of a manager to take charge and lead while knowing when to pull back and let your employees do the tasks they are assigned to do. Throughout the series there are many examples of project managers who did poorly in this area. In episode 1 Erika on team Protégé tried to huddle her team and create a game plan but never made a decision and moved on to the next task at hand. An incident that occurred vice versa was during episode 2 when Sam was the project manager and was too harsh on making decisions and micromanaging his teammates who felt that his leadership was inconsistent. Lastly in the last episode, Kwame showed a leadership style of being more laid back which led Omarosa to make pivotal mistakes, while Bill was so frenzied during his gold tournament that those under him felt like they were micromanaged at times because he had to make sure that every task was completed and done the right way. II. The next principal learning I took from the show was that when managing a team or group and you have people who wonder off and become problems, it is your job to real them back in and motivate them at the task at hand. In the beginning of class you said managing someone is manipulation. Although this is an intense way to describe it, in this case, it is the only word appropriate. In episode 2, Jason was the project manager for Versacorp and had trouble motivating Sam to work. Jason assigned small pointless tasks to Sam which made Sam feel inferior to the group so he took a nap in the corner while the rest of the team worked. In episode 1, Tammy decided to take a lunch break when her team was trying to sell lemonade. Instead of scolding her and making her upset the told her they really needed her to focus and perform well to complete the task. III. My next principal learning from the show is that negotiation is all about strategy. The best example of this was the famous “duped” episode where Troy played a tough game to get the apartment his opponent wanted. Some saw this as shady and childish but I though he was intelligent in the way he went about it. A negative example comes from episode 1, 2, and 3, where the female team continually used sex to sell. The main culprits consisted of Heidi, Erika, Amy, Katrina, and Kristi. These women would consistently where skimpy clothing and flirt with the men they were dealing with to get what they wanted. Although it was successful it did not look very professional to viewers at home. IV. The next principal learning I took away was that you have to look out for yourself. In many of the episodes, when it came down to the boardrooms, the people who explained what they did and defended themselves often stayed. Bill, Kwame, Sam, Nick, and Amy are great examples of this. I have a firm belief that this was a major factor in them staying in the later part of the show. All are extremely talented in different areas of business, but being able to converse and “sell” yourself to Donald Trump was key because in the end, he makes every decision who stays and who goes. Tammy, Jesse, and Kristi are all examples of people who could not stand up for themselves and were fired because of it. Kristi relied too much on her team, while Tammy went against her team and say they had been duped. Jesse just lacks confidence and wasn’t as strong willed as one should be to win the apprenticeship. V. The next principal learning to take from the show is thinking outside the box is great but not too much. Throughout most of the series Troy was a hub of ideas, although wacky, and helped his team be successful in many cases. Bill and Katrina had made fantastic decisions in the rickshaw challenge by advertising signs on the carts from companies they worked in precious tasks. Troy came up with the idea of bringing a lion and the dancers of the show at the Trump Taj Mahal to attract people to become members with them. In that same episode, Bill targeted the VIP players and proved to be very important in the challenge. “No idea is a bad idea”. VI. The last principal learning I absorbed from watching The Apprentice is that details are everything. In one episode, Donald Trump says that “God is in the details” and this was confusing at first. In the last challenge Omarosa did not communicate with Jessica Simpson’s people about having a car pick them up so they had their own car while the Taj Mahal sent one as well, wasting money and time. When Troy negotiates with others he uses his country charm and positive attitude to woo those he talks too. When those don’t get the job done he sticks to specific details to make the sale. Bill is another person that showed his detail orientated-ness in the Planet Hollywood challenge. Amy also exemplified this when she made the sale of the Callaway golf club in episode 2.

Another possible solution to this is by using a larger speech unit to decrease the number of concatenation points. In this project, which utilized two-syllable Filipino words, the speech unit is syllable. Characterization of these Filipino words is done to differentiate words of the same spelling but of different meanings. This characterization took note of the pitch, duration of utterance of each syllable in the word, and the first three formant frequencies. A digital signal processing (DSP) block is also implemented. It accepts two-syllable text and outputs all the possible utterances of that word; this block is the text-to-speech synthesizer. This paper proposes and illustrates an evaluation methodology for this noisy channel which tries to quantify the relative amount of degradation in translation quality due to each of the contributing modules. A small pilot experiment involving word-accuracy rate for the SR, and a fidelity evaluation for the MT and SS modules is proposed in which subjects are asked to paraphrase translated and/or synthesised sentences from a tourist’s phrasebook. Results show (as expected) that MT is the “noisiest” channel, with SS contributing least noise.
