week 1

Take some time to discuss, in your opinion, the most interesting material this week in your reading assignments. How will that material help you in a professional position? Why?

week 2

For our discussion, put yourself in the position of consultant to an owner of several small convenience stores. You've been hired to help set up a process for ensuring the owner has valid selection measures for each position in the store. Based on what you have learned in Chapters 2-4, what recommendations would you make to help the owner establish an appropriate HR plan? What method of job analysis would you recommend? Please post your suggestions and your rationale to address the above questions. You should then respond to the postings of other students. Our goal is to try to define key elements that need to be considered when establishing HR planning and job analysis for a small organization. In your responses, be sure to provide citations from the text or other sources to support your statements.

week 3

Recruitment is not the only activity that affects an organization's ability to attract applicants. What are some of the other important factors (both internal and external to the organization) and what is their impact on the recruitment function? In your initial response, identify one factor and its impact. Be sure your contribution adds to the discussion and does not repeat information posted by another student. In addition, you are responsible for responding to the comments posted by at least two other students and responding to the comments and questions posted about your statement. If you have any questions about this discussion, please let us know.

week 4

For our discussion this week, let's consider further the role that benefits play in recruiting. Put yourself in the role of your organization's recruiter, what benefits might you use to attract Generation X and Y employees (under 45 years of age)? How do the benefits differ from those that you might use to attract workers who belong to the baby boom generation (45+ years of age)? In your initial response, identify one benefit and how you might use to attract Generation X and Y employees or Baby Boomers. Be sure your contribution adds to the discussion and does not merely repeat information posted by another student.

week 5 Let's consider the different methods of assessment and how they are used in organizations. Think about a position recently filled in your organization. What methods of assessment did your organization use? Of those methods use, which ones were relied on most heavily? Why?

week 6

Various organizations use a wide variety of selection techniques in choosing new employees. How would you feel if you applied for a position with an organization that you really wanted to work for, and found out that they used handwriting analysis and honesty testing as part of the selection process?

week 7 Employment-at-will involves the right of either the employer or employee to unilaterally terminate the employment relationship at any time, for any legal reason. Does this policy offer equal protection to both parties? What legal/policy change or changes do you think need to be made, if any? Why/why not? Be sure your contribution adds to the discussion and does not merely repeat information posted by another student. At a minimum, you must address the main questions.

week 8

Name three important pieces of new information you have learned and will apply from this course.
